Mark Warner's One-Liner for The Ages

DENVER -- The best one-liner of the night on Tuesday came from former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, who was touting his business career:

"I got in on the ground floor of the cell phone business."

That's certainly one for the history books.

::scratching my scalp:: Of all the on-point, titilating comments made by speakers from the Democratic convention floor tonight, Ankers picks the most insignificant, lame one imaginable. While Warner's keynote address was arousing, that line Ankers selects registers a zero of any importance whatsoever.

In contrast, Sen. Clinton's, "No Way, No How, No McCain!" was received by the floor with an ovation that roared, reminiscent of how Former Texas Governor, Ann Richards, eloquently commanded a crowd.
(I'm recalling Gov. Richard's one-liner about Bush I, "Poor George, he can't help it, he was born with a silver foot in his mouth").

What about Casey's line that "Bush was born on third base & stold second"? That was hillarious. Considering how that line landed such a poignant blow right on target, why did Ankers select such a politically insignificant line?

Must be a McCain backer...unable to see the forest for the trees.

"stold"? Seriously?

Oh, and by the way, Akers was being sarcastic, I believe.

Forgive my ignorance but I don't think I quite grasp the significance here. If, as Warner claimed, he helped start up Nextel in the early '80's, that would make his remark here true and probably a tribute to his excellent foresight. Not sure why that makes it a "one-liner for the ages," though.

I thought Mark Warner had a great line but it had nothing to do with his bio:

"We don't need a President who is entrenched in the past."

He wasted a great opportunity to smash McCain and Bush in the teeth--apparently because he wants avoid offending the GOP voters in Virginia who will decide his senate race.

I thought his best line was how he described the Bush energy policy: "Basically borrowing money from China to buy oil from countries that don't like us."

Yes, Casey's line, and his entire speech actually, were the best of the convention so far. I also admire his courage for bringing up his minority (in this Convention) views on abortion in a straight-forward and un-defensive manner.

What?

This is a statement of fact. How do you classify it as a 'one liner', i.e., a joke?

Posted by: jdwill | August 27, 2008 11:38 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, and do you know how he got in on the ground floor of the cell-phone industry? By using insider information he obtained while working on the Hill...a practice that would have landed him in jail had Sen. Dodd (who Warner worked for) not intervened and had the investigations terminated before they got off the ground. Warner got his entire start by cheating the system that he says today in his campaign speeches "should be equal and fair for all Americans." Yeah, I guess now that he's gotten his $200 million he can afford to fight for a fair system-

Stupidest Akers posting in a long time.

And that's saying something.

Seriously, how does Akers still have a job? When was the last time anyone here read her blog and came away impressed?

Has it ever happened?

I disagree ... Mark Warner's best line was: In four months, we will have an administration that actually believes in science!

MAA - What is so impressive about it?

I liked Mark Warner last night, but agree that his statement that "got in on the ground floor" was just an "understatement of his good fortune, to have some insite."
Best of all it underscored that you can fail, but in American get up and try again without lying, stealing and cheating, success can be achieved. My favorite Bible story is about Job, who didn't give up

Steve, I don't think she's actually paid. She might even pay to "work" as an intern.

Even though Warner's speech fell a bit flat (I understood the intent - frame the Demos as the future) I dug the science line and laughed out loud. But the best one liner was "McCain is not a maverick, he's a sidekick"! Go Young Bob Casey!

Ya'll actually wasted good beer drinking time listening to that drivel? I missed it about like I do diarrhea! Mark Twain was right: "There is only one way to look at politiican and that is down".
