McCain's Brother Phones in Traffic Update... to 911

Updated, 3:22 PM

As if John McCain's campaign didn't have big enough problems already, along comes Joe the Brother and his road rage.

Joe McCain, who led a rally in Culpeper, Va., Thursday evening on behalf of his brother, the Republican presidential nominee, apparently got a tad testy earlier this week when he ran into bad traffic while driving on I-95 in Alexandria, Va. Instead of calling the traffic information line, he called 911 and cursed out the emergency operator.

As first reported by the local ABC affiliate WJLA, here is a transcript of the 911 call that took place on Tuesday of this week, in the wee hours of the morning:

Operator: 911 state your emergency

Caller: It's not an emergency but do you know why on one side at the damn drawbridge of 95 traffic is stopped for 15 minutes and yet traffic's coming the other way?

Operator: Sir, are you calling 911 to complain about traffic? (pause)

Caller: "(Expletive) you." (caller hangs up)

Click here to listen to a tape recording of Joe McCain's call. (Doesn't Joe sound a lot like his brother John?)

Presumably perturbed, the operator who was cursed out called the number from which the call was placed and got this voice mail message: "Hi this is Joe McCain. I can't take this message now because I'm involved in a very...important political project... I hope on Nov. 4th we have elected John."

Then, Joe called 911 a second time. According to the transcript of the call, he said, "Somebody gave me this riot act about the violation of police." The operator asked, "Did you just call 911 in reference to this?" "Yeah," Joe said. The operator replied, "911 is to be used for emergencies only, not just because you're sitting in traffic."

At least Joe, the 66-year-old younger brother of Sen. McCain, didn't curse out the operator that time around.

A spokeswoman for the Alexandria Police Department, Ashley Hildebrandt, tells us the initial call to 911 was made "around 1:30 a.m. on October 21." She said there was no subsequent communication between Joe McCain and the police department.

The McCain campaign has not yet responded to a request for comment.

The 911 incident reminds us of someone else in the McCain family who has had run-ins with the law on roadways. That would be Roberta McCain, the indefatigable 96-year-old mother of Joe and John McCain who, as we reported last summer, is a notorious lead foot.

This whole series of events with the campaign this week is just a bit frustrating. It's like when it rains, it pours. It reminds me of the time when . . .

You can understand poor Joe's frustration. If he was in Alexandria, heading for the Wilson bridge, he must have been looking forward to getting out of the communist part of Virginia. Of course, 911 is paid for by public funds, so it, presumably, is communist as well.

This was just an unforgivable incident for which I can make no excuse. But I truly thought I had hung up my cell phone when I closed with that epithet. Still absolutely no excuse, but if I had known those officers had heard that insult, I would apologized on the spot.

As a result, I will be doing no more campaigning. But please try not to hold this against my brother. It's completely unconnected, of course. My mantra has always been -- "Do No Harm" against him, and now I have. In the worst way.

Sorry to those officers -- I have written them an apology -- and to all those rightfully offended by my actions.

Does it NOT seem strange that only McCain's people get reported on?? No on ever talks about what the Dems are doing...I am actually surprised there is not a fart counter for Republicans.
This is not a story that even should have had the words wasted on it...isn't it amazing on what the liberal media comes up with when no dirt is found??

Posted by: djmiller1 | October 25, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

Joe shouldn't have called 911, we know it & he knows it. As Joe takes the flack from his stupid act....and it was stupid, I want to ask how many times have we been in traffic and felt frusterated because we are stuck and do not know why? I don't agree with what he did, but I understand how he felt.

Because of hurricane activity, there was a gas shortage in Atlanta and 911 received many calls asking where drivers could find gas. This cleasrly was abuse to the 911 emergency system, but the frusteration of the "not knowing" had gotten people down.

I understand cursing. The only thing I do not believe regarding what he said for an excuse was that he thought his phone was on mute. Why would anyone think about hitting the mute button just before disconnecting the line? Fortunately Joe's frusteration didn't degress into road rage....an increasing problem on our roads these days.

What is wrong with the extremists in the liberal media?

The liberal media are the ones who didn't have the spine or integrity to expose Bush's lies about the war in Iraq and many other excesses of their administration. The liberal media is responsible for the election of a republican idiot to the White House!,....and here we go again...

The liberal media is now supporting another idiot with their propaganda of lies in support of Barack Hussein, the most extreme and radical and militant candidate this country has ever seen!

We don't need another idiot in the White House that will destroy America and the American values we treasure and hold dear.

Americans need to wake up and ignore the liberal media mind control propaganda and vote for the only candidate that loves America, John McCain, a true patriot that risked his life for our country.

Save America from militant extremists!
Vote for McCain/Palin

I thought the Bush-Cheney gang were bad enough. The McCain family seems dumber yet. They don't even seem to realize that their loony comments and tactics are doing them in. Voters see this. What a buncha losers. Obama makes mincemeat out of mCCain's ticket and now we know why.

Maybe the traffic problem could have been solved by calling 1-900-TRAFFIC. It would have been worth the time and dime instead of going round in circles.
There's another traffic problem though up here in NYMetroCityState US. The problem seems to be the ongoing connection between Oakland NJ, home of the former Republican Attorney General of NJ , E. Carey Edwards and his favorite University of Choice in Mahwah NJ, and the present Attorney General of the State of California, sometimes hailed as Governor MoonBeam, The Governor of Oakland Califoria, Edmond G. Brown, aka Jerry Brown. (More attuned into this area at the Community College of Choice RCC)
People are arguing all over this TriState area the rumor going round and round if "Jerry" and his former GirlFriend Linda Rhondstadt of Singer/Songwriter fame, on a well publicized trip to Africa one year actually picked out Barack Obama of Illinois as USAmerica's candidate this year. Or, as they are saying, did a Foreign Government pick the candidates this year. On Republican Party Days of the Week (always two days ago this day October 26 2008, or two days after today this day October 26 2008, most are arguing that Barack Obama was hand picked ( as already noted several places on the Web by this signatore), by the Republican Party itself, in order that the Democrats could play their own cards for a change,
"Race card " especially.
Jesus Christ and Pontius Pilot aside, if we're all going on a Fox Hunt anyway, we should have payed more attention to the Moons and Suns above us (our history before us) and figured out a long time before hand if we all knew what the Traffic Problem was going to be, come this November 4 Tuesday 2008, and November 6 2012, Tuesday (still on you GoogleCalendars) http://www.google.com/calendar.
So get your Scooters going and figure it out before Tuesday of whenever it is on your own calendar, because if traffic is'nt as heavy as anticipated then the candidate of the Land of Lincoln is going to be headed back to his "Log Cabin", for a little more than Republican Party Log Cabin Club syrupy tears of pain if the Trojan Horse shows us all up as already anticipated by the RePooplicans of HIT with a Signal.
Head for the hills but don't say I didn't warn you.

If that was me calling 911 about a traffic holdup... I would be sitting in an Alexandria jail... with absolutely zero news coverage! Put the PUTZ in jail!

Joe McCain acts just like his brother, John. It's already common news that McCain is H*** to work with in Washington.

Guess maybe "Peace Talks" would not work with him, huh?

Posted by: carolo43 | October 27, 2008 9:49 AM | Report abuse

I wasn't voting for the brother, anyway.
Obviously, Joe was fully aware, that 911 calls were for emergency use only. He should be fined for calling 911; the fact that he called the number twice and delivered his expletive language.
The Republicans and Democrats receive the same publicity, when they are wrong, and give the appearance of being elitist.

Listen don't be so ignorant, Hussien Obama’s trips to Hawaii on a chartered Boeing 757 each cost more than twice the price of Sarah Palin’s new clothes.
Brad Blakeman, who was in charge of scheduling for President Bush, says a Boeing 757 costs about $20,000 an hour for fuel, crew, and maintenance. Since a trip to Hawaii entails 10 hours of flying time from Chicago, the total cost for each round-trip comes to about $400,000.

Joe the plumber says his famous meeting with Sen. Barack Obama has made him "scared for America."
“When I was face to face with him, my honest first impression was that I expected something more,” wrote Wurzelbacher in an online chat on WashingtonTimes.com. “I had heard so much about ‘his presence’ in the media that I was surprised to find that he seemed very average. My gut feeling as he answered my questions? I was scared for America.”

Thanks Ms Akers,
This IS important because it shows what kind of angry, self centered people the McCains are. If that had been John, he would have called for an airstrike. Repluticans literally beleive they own this country, and no one should dare to question them or their actions. I'm waiting for them to shut down the polls November 4th, due to terrorist activity, or space aliens invading and suspend any further elections until the threat has passed. Obama will be arrested as a space terrorist from a muslim planet, Bush will decalre marshal law and will appoint McCain as our supreme leader, and Palin as minister of defiance.
Angry, delusional replutican supremists will then cleanse the nation of all threats.
Sound far fetched? I think the repluticans are so paranoid and fearfull of losing, they have a thinktank somewhere that comes with all kinds of schemes.
Just keep reading the news(sorry, the liberal media) and watch the stunts they are about to pull in the next week.
You heard it here first.

ill-tempered brother...ditzy VP...dumb posters...and no message. No wonder McCain wants to dial in his appearance on election night.

True- if one of us used 911 like this- we would probably get a fine. and no doubt, both brothers have an anger problem- we all know John McCain does - that's been public for a long time.

Pray tell me, is there something wrong with this family?

I just do not see where their entitlement comes from. We have just gone through eight years of a would-be emperor and his suit of new clothes. Do we have another one in the wings?

Give America a break!!!

Hahahahahaha!
What an idiot. Who calls 911 when they are stuck in traffic? If we all did that, 911 would be a perpetual busy signal. Talk about elitists? 8 more days!

Posted by: biggirl90 | October 27, 2008 9:26 PM | Report abuse

biggirl90 asks who calls 911 when stuck in traffic? A MAVERICK of course. Joe McCain is just like his brother. He saw a problem and took the most direct way to try and fix it only to be stymied by short-sighted public servants obsessed about following the rules.
