Joe the Plumber Takes Internet By Storm

Ohioan Joe Wurzelbacher, a.k.a. "Joe the Plumber," speaking with Sen. Barack Obama on a camaign rope line this week. (Reuters Photo)

Just about every news outlet has something to say about last night's most oft mentioned name in the final presidential debate, the conservatives' newfound cause celeb, Joe the Plumber.

Discovered by Fox News and thrust into the heart of the presidential campaign, Joe the Plumber, a.k.a., Joe Wurzelbacher, is the personification of Joe Sixpack. And the new great hope for Republicans. As Kathryn Jean Lopez writes in this National Review Online piece this morning, "I don't know if Joe the Plumber will win the election for John McCain. But he should."

Though Joe himself, the newborn star, won't commit to voting for McCain. Appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America" this morning, Wurzelbacher wouldn't say who he plans to vote for on Nov. 4.

Though we think it's a safe bet that if the 34-year-old plumber is registered to vote, he won't be voting for Obama, who he compared to Sammy Davis Jr. in an interview last night with CBS. Joe the Plumber told Katie Couric he was upset by the answer he got from Obama, when they met on the campaign trail, to his question about the Democratic presidential nominee's tax plan. "And unfortunately I asked the question but I still got a tap dance. Do you -- almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr."

In an exclusive interview with the Toledo Blade following last night's debate, Wurzelbacher expressed embarrassment that he's now known across America as Joe the Plumber. "There's a lot more important issues than me, and I'm starting to feel a little uncomfortable with it," he said. "Everyone's more worried about what Joe the Plumber has to say than what Obama or McCain has to say." (Click the link above to watch the video interview with Wurzelbacher.)

As you can see in this Fox News clip captured on YouTube, Joe the Plumber, when he posed his now famous tax question to Obama, said he was looking to buy a plumbing business that makes between $250,000 and $278,000 a year. Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden thinks that sounds like an awful lot of money for someone who claims to be worried.

On NBC News this morning, Biden said, "I don't have any Joe the Plumbers in my neighborhood who make $250,000 a year and they're worried."

The New York Times editorializes that McCain, trailing Barack Obama in the double digits and having no clear campaign message, clutched his new plumber friend like a doll and repeatedly whacked Obama over the head with it.

"Mr. McCain also stuck to his campaign's nasty tone," the Times writes. "He could not let go of the 'Joe the Plumber' parable, saying his opponent's plan was 'to take Joe's money, give it to Senator Obama and let him spread the wealth around.'"

The Los Angeles Times TV critic agrees that McCain came off as nasty, observing that "after about a half-hour of self-restraint, McCain at times could not contain himself, muttering and issuing small grunts. The split-screen -- used by some cable news stations -- was not McCain's friend. In contrast to Obama's winning smile, McCain's eye-widening and explosive snorts undercut his tone and made him seem at times simply rude."

CNN's instapundit poll easily gives the debate to Obama, 58 percent to 31 percent. The polls also shows Obama favorables rose slightly during the debate, from 63 percent to 66 percent, while McCain's favorables dropped, from 51 percent to 49 percent.

But the New York Post declares someone else the winner of last night's debate: "Who was the big winner in last night's presidential debate?" the NY Post editorializes this morning. "That would be Joe Wurzelbacher -- 'Joe the Plumber' -- who Sunday demanded that Barack Obama explain why he should pay higher taxes for 'fulfilling the American dream.'"

UPDATE, 1 pm ET: And PS, everybody, Joe the Plumber doesn't even have his plumbing license. But he does work for a small plumbing company.

So Biden thinks a business that makes $250,000 a year makes this guy rich?!! What a joke he is. It's apparent that since Joe works for this business now, when he buys it he will probably replace the position he vacated, along with the corresponding salary of that individual. Are there others who work there and are paid by the company? How about overhead, operating costs, etc. Doesn't sound to me like Joe has a whole hell of a lot left over. Biden and Obama can spin it anyway they like, but small business will absolutely suffer and many will go under because of the half-baked policies of the B&O express.

Did anyone stop to think that gross sales, in this case $250,000 does not = taxable income; as cost of goods sole, and other business expenses are subtracted from gross sales--including wages, auto expense, etc. Under Obama's plan taxes would not be raised. this is a non-issue. the real question, was "the plumber" a set-up by Fox/McCain? Is the "plumber" registered to vote?

Any business that grosses $250,000 and has employees and materials to buy is not going to net an amount to worry about - my experience in a small business is that after everyone else is paid, there is little left for the owner - Joe the Plumber may be much better off financially to stay as an employee and take his paycheck - he does not understand what it takes to run a business and will likely be bankrupt quickly - who is he going to blame for his own ignorance??

Great Sen McCain has put Joe as example of the American People. Here is a clue Joe, don't say on national TV that he tapped around it like Sammy Davis Jr. He could have said Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly.

I somehow think Sen Obama was much more gracious than Joe.

We now have a situation in which the newest "unknown" brought to the national stage by the McCain campaign, "Joe the Plumber", is being keenly watched as the latest barometer of what the nation really wants. Who cares what he thinks? He may be a very nice man, but frankly that's all we can say about him. We know nothing about him and his background, values or personal prejudices. We cannot say that he is representative because we simply don't know enough about him. Certainly, he doesn't seem, on the tiny evidence we have, to be representative of me or my friends: we have great sympathy with Obama and his thinking/policy proposals, and we know that there are many more like us out there.

Can we please push on and try to behave like thinking adults as we sort out the serious information and ready for the election?

This is one of those instances where sound bites hurt. If the business pulls in 250 thousand a year, and even if Joe is the sole employee, he still doesn't net 250 thousand. He has expenses - parts, transportation, office space, etc. that is deducted from his gross profit. More than likely, his taxes would go down under the Obama plan and go down more than they would under McCain's plan.

If for some reason, the business nets more than 250 thousand in a year, than you can afford the tax rate - and if you are not incorporated and are paying as in individual, you need to talk to a tax/business attorney. Individuals who make 250 thousand can afford to pay 30 percent of their income in taxes more than someone who makes 25 thousand can since so many other taxes and fees are regressive. And if we don't start paying for some of the things we are spending money on, the next generation or two will have to pay far higher taxes just to keep up with the interest on the national debt - which I think is still the largest single "discretionary" expenditure in the federal budget. It is the difference between "tax and spend" (or pay as you go) and "spend and owe."

Posted by: An | October 16, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

If Joe makes $278k only $28k would be taxed 3% higher than present, for a total increase of $840. And when you consider the portion of his income that falls in the lower brackets will be taxed less under Obama's plan, that $840 drops even lower. If less than $840 worries Joe - if the business's success or failure hinges on having that $840, then maybe Joe's not really cut out for owning a business.

Various websites have discovered that Joe Wurzelbacher (whose real first name is Sam) from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio - Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years (

Also, Joe does not appear to be registered to vote in Ohio (

And the best part - apparently, Joe is a tax cheat! (

October 16, 2008, 2:48PM

So, let me get this straight. Joe "the plumber" Wurzelbacher has no license to practice plumbing, has neglected to pay his taxes and is a relative of the Keating family. The first two points are largely irrelevant, though they will no doubt be studied by the media for hours. But the question the media should be asking is this: Is Wurzelbacher a McCain campaign plant, who was deliberately placed in Obama's path in Ohio? And if so, what does this say about John McCain's relationship with the Keatings, which he insists ended years ago? And if they say he wasn't a plant, is this just too much of a coincidence to believe?

So if he's not a McCain plant per se, odds are he's a Keating plant, even if he planted himself.

Oh, Lily,

Businesses don't pay income taxes on payroll, materials, fuel, or any other operating expense. Every bit of the cost of doing business is deductible.

For Joe to be subject to a tax increase, he would have to make more than $250,000 in NET PROFIT, which would normally come out of about $2,000,000 a year or more in gross revenue. If Joe took in $250,000 a year, he'd just barely be making ends meet, and he'd get a much better deal on his taxes under Obama than McCain.

On the other hand, if he is making more than $250,000 in net profits, he can afford a couple thousand for taxes very easily.

Hate to be the one to break it to you since you are such a sleuth...but Joe the Plumber is Joe the Plant. He's part of the McCain campaign. This was a setup. His license expired in 2002. Ohio has a tax lien against him and a relative by family marriage is no other than Charles Keating. You and the rest of the MSM have been had. The big question for me is...are you going to given McCain a pass on this one or are you going to go after McCain for deceptive lying to the voters who tuned in last night?????

Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2008 12:41 AM | Report abuse

The real accomplishment of the plumber nonsense was to distract those watching the debate from real issues. At this, McCain succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Today nobody is talking about the McCain plan to reduce taxes on LARGE corporations (as has been pointed out, most SMALL businesses are organized as partnerships, chapter S corporations, LLCs, none of which pay ANY business income tax), or about McCain's flop in the recent financial rescue/bailout, or his insistence that the Iraq war is a good idea; they are all talking about Joe the plumber. So a win for McCain, no matter how dirty and unethical.
By the way, it appears that Joe the (unlicensed) "plumber" is actually a gopher/handyman for the real plumber (Newell?) in the Toledo area. No way the business profits in the six figures, no way Joe could afford to buy the business. As a resutlt of his divorce, Joe owes Ohio some unpaid personal property taxes and has a fairly low income, if the reports are true. He's probably not a McCain plant, although the angry man and the black man in the McCain campaign videos quite obviously are. Let's hear it for Senator Reformer and the Crooked Talk Express!

Do not believe "Joe, the plumber" as he has been set up for Obama by McCain. He is not a plumber,he is a contractor. He owes 1000+ in back taxes. He is not buying his boss's business because the boss is not selling. He does not have a plumbing license although you must have one for the Toledo area but not for the small towns surrounding Toledo. He probably makes 40,000 a year. The Repubs do underhanded stuff. joe the plumber helped obama define his socialist economic policy .. but obama has much more going on than 'spreading the wealth around' just in america. last summer senator obama introduced the 'the global poverty act' to congress, which has been passed in the house and currently awaits approval in the senate. the global poverty act is a tax of 0.7% of the american gdp (gross domestic product), to be given to the united nations and distributed to third world countries in an attempt to eradicate 50% of the world's poverty. virtually no one knows about this, and yet it will cost americans 845 billion dollars over the next 13 years. what kind of insane agenda for our economy is obama working on? (let it be noted this has nothing to do with the recent 700+ billion dollar subprime bailout .. these are two totally separate activities.)

topics in this easy read include joe the plumber, the debate, socialism and finally the the global poverty act, which the heritage foundation calls "superfluous, misguided, and dangerous". check it out here:

Hey "goldenwren" ever heard of ACORN? Probably not, your too busy watching "The View" or some other brain dead media show. I thought Obama went up to "Joe the plumber". It's not like Joe grabbed his arm and started telling him his story. If he was a McCain plant, I guess The MESSIAH should have sensed evil and walked on passed.
The scary part of these stories and others like Sarah Palins, is how the media or whoever, can come into someones life or emails etc. and poke around, make it a world wide story and ruin their lives. Remember Richard Jewel? They ruined his life and they were wrong. He never bombed anything. Then they say "Oh my bad".The power of these people should scare the crap out of you. You better not say anything against who we like or we will shut you up and ruin your life. Sounds like Nazi Germany or the IRS to me. You people need to wake up.The media clouds everyones minds with so much crap. Do the investigations yourself and stop relying on the media to spoon feed you. Good places to look - for tax plans on the candidates to see which plan is better. Look up the small business administrations website. See what defines a small business. You can make $25 million in the car dealer business and still be considered a small business!Obama is LYING when he says that most small businesses earn under $250,000. Look it up!!!!
Plus how can Obama say that under his tax plan 95% will receive a tax break when only 40% actually pay taxes. Think about it. So is that more of his " spreading the wealth around"? Maybe Obama needs to spread some of his wealth to his half brother George Obama in Africa living in a hut. He only makes a $1 a month. Seems to me he could give him a taste! I am fet up with working my butt off for these politians that want MORE of my money for more crap.Tell me why Obama wants millions to educate the WORLDS kids when our own kids can't read or write? Come on! More money for NATO? We already pay millions to NATO and what do we get for it? NATO forces going in a raping women! Obama is too important, and too FAR ABOVE THE PUBLIC - FAR SUPERIOR TO HIS FELLOW PUBLIC SERVANTS to be so humanely examined. Butl on the other hand, it's just fine for Obama, the media, the sick sycophant bloggers to try to harm a woman of courage and conviction - a family woman, a loving mother, a HUGELY popular governor (imagine an elected official who has maintained their integrity while garnering 80 PERCENT of their public's approval). Silly me......... INTEGRITY IS A WORD NEVER ASSOCIATED WITH OBAMA

It is interesting to note that "Joe the Plumber" had the same McCain due diligence as Sarah Palin. Palin has “experience” as the mayor of a 9,000 people village and took it into debt; is the governor of a state with more caribou than people where there is more welfare from oil revenue than any state in the union. That qualifies her to be able to be the president of the US of A, since that is the job of the VP. Joe, on the other hand isn't even a plumber, but a wannabee if he gets a license. He won't be able to buy the business because he owes back taxes to the state of Ohio and therefore his credit is shot. So what does it matter how much his company has AFTER EXPENSES AND TAXES.
So these two are great examples of a candidate’s vision and hope for the future. Joe and Sarah make quite a pair in qualifying and decision making quality. Makes you want to run right out and vote McCain.
As for the whole tax issue; if that net income after all deductions is over $250,000 then pay taxes like a good American. Taxes support the country you all love so much; or think you do.

I agree that "Joe" would write off so much and still come out ahead of the game like most other companies (big and small) although the big companies already have tax exemptions set up by our government.
I also think the repub. set that up. Barack didn't go to his house, "Joe" came to him. Why would he go to him being he's a republican? (supposedly) I didn't hear that he was registered or if he paid his back taxes yet. McCain probably made him a deal..that old cronie.

I think Joe the plumber is stupid... I don't see how anybody can say he is out Rep for middle class. This man don't even pay our taxes.. McCain had the nerve to say Obama is handing out Welfare checks.. Come on.. Right now the gas is going down.. ok they are waiting to see who is going to be in office. If it is McCain than all the ones who voted for McCAin and Blonde will start whining.. It is said how people read into there crap.. One thing i will say about Obama is that he is whiling to make peace.. Fighting is not always the answer.. It is time for a change.. You know if McCains wins (remember how everyone was like i want Bush to win) what the hell happen... Look what we got.. I rather have a humble person than drama, mess, and stupid person in the white house.... That crap about the military is for McCain.. Now that is a lieeeeeeeeee there i know alot of base who hate that man.. How many times is he going to tell his story about POW... I respect the man but when it comes down to it i agree with Collin Powell.... His judgement is questionable because if he allow that type of problems go on within his staff now just wait until they get in office.. Palin is not smarter than a 5th grader.. Fox news is so bias... Everything is all about them... Joe needs to stop serious he is not the spokes person for middle classes. That is saying alot about us then.
