McCain's American Idol Make-Up Artist Makes Big Bucks

American Idol make-up artist Tifanie White has found some high profile work while the show is on break. (Altaffer/AP)

Remember last month when Republican presidential nominee John McCain got made up by the American Idol make-up artist?

Well, it wasn't a one-shot deal. The make-up artist to the wannabe-stars is getting paid beaucoup bucks to make McCain, 72, more telegenic.

Tifanie White, who reportedly has done makeup for the shows "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol," was paid a total of $8,672.55 in September by the McCain-Palin campaign, according to the campaign's latest monthly financial report filed this week with the Federal Election Commission. She was paid $5,583.43 the previous month, records show.

We asked McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers whether McCain was happy with the American Idol make-up artist's work, and whether Ms. White also does makeup for McCain's naturally telegenic vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin. Rogers replied via email, "No comment."

We refrained from asking whether McCain might have a future on "American Idol" if things don't break his way two weeks from today on Election Day. But at least he has an in if he so chooses.

At least it's not $400 for a haircut!

Oh wait. It's much more than $400.

For makeup.

Wow. What a tool.

Posted by: Lettuce | October 21, 2008 2:07 PM | Report abuse

I'm a 72 year old female, and I doubt if I have spent that much on makeup in my entire life!

Posted by: Anonymous | October 21, 2008 2:10 PM | Report abuse

That only comes out to about $180something bucks a day! As a Joe Sixpack, I pay that to get my makeup done every morning before I go off to my plumbing job. Who in real America doesn't?

And then, I pay someone $200 to chew my food for me.

The dude who goes to the bathroom for me makes nearly $500 a day. It's more expensive because it's a Union job.

This is Joe Sixpack, signing off.

Oh, P.S., the guy who drinks my sixpack of beer? $90 a day.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 21, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

Just to clarify, he spent that amount paying a (top) makeup artist, not on makeup. That's mostly for her time, which could include hours of waiting around, travel expenses and yes, the actual makeup.

rucka,

Your comment -- "that translates to over $100,000/year... Joe the Plumber don't make that kind of cash I am sure, and he has a real job..." -- gets one thing badly wrong. (Well, actually, several things, but I'm only gonna mention one.)

Makeup artists who work in TV and film have real jobs, and very often they work far longer hours than the rest of us. In film and commercial work, it's the norm for these people to work 12-14 (or 15 or 16) hours a day, six days a week. They have to be on set ahead of all but the grip and lighting crews, meaning that they usually have to report to work around 5:00 a.m. or earlier.

For campaign work -- readying candidates for speeches, debates, conventions, meet-and-greets, rallies, etc. -- they have to travel to wherever the candidate is going to be "performing" -- often several locations per day.

While it may sound like glamorous "work" (wink-wink), it's not. It's long hours, basic drudgery, and often difficult or snippy clients.

Believe me, putting lipstick on a pig is NOT an easy way to earn your living.

There are some stains a make-up artist cannot cover up.

For example, the surprising behavior of John McCain, when it came to getting at the truth of what happened to those missing in action in Vietnam.

There is a disturbing video out there that John McCain does not want you to see:

Sarah Palin speaks of the Washinton elite and shows sympathy towards the poor folks hurting as a result of the economy. Yet it appears ,according to Politico's Ben Smith, that the McCain campaign has spent upwards of $150,000 to clothe and accessorize Palin and her family in one month alone...wonder what Joe the Plumbers would think of that!! Not a great message to the vast majority of folks out there who are struggling to keep their homes & the bills paid!! I guess freezing spending only applies to others in these difficult times!!

$8000 bucks a month ain't bad, for basically reanimating a corpse.

Bargain!

Why isn't this as big a story as Edwards' $400 haircut? If it were Obama the RNC and McCain - and, subsequently, the press - would be going nuts. What economic crisis?

Thanks, WaPo, for not ignoring this.

What economic crisis?=========== Because McCain sint going around acting like "he knows what its like to be poor or middle class". Edwards got lambasted because he was a liar and a hypocrite. McCain isnt playing class warfare. He wants to give EVERYONE a tax break, not give out welfare checks and tax the rich and "spread the wealth". Maybe you Liberals need to learn to think for yourselves, and not use the typical Democrat talking points night in and night out.

Posted by: Nick | October 22, 2008 9:15 AM | Report abuse

and what you Liberals fail to realize....is that the cost for this makeup artist also includes FLYING HER AROUND HE COUNTRY with him. Wow, $180 a day, including air fare and travel, expenses, etc. Quite different from a $400 haircut....but I guess you Liberals only approve of something when its done by the messiah Nobama.

Disgusting uneducated, stupid arrogant free loaders are down on older citizens just as Clinton's Shalala was. She wanted to exterminate old people and give condoms to kids in school. You don't have mothers and fathers, do you? Where did you come from? Bad seeds? ... in the country we destroy bad seeds. Maybe Shalala had it right ... but her age target is inverted.

****AMERICA SHOULD BE FEARFULLY CONCERNED****

In the last month, After Governor Sarah Palin and HER Administration was refused by The Alaska Superior Court, then refused by The Alaska Supreme Court to SQUASH the “Troopergate Investigation” against Sarah Palin, the Alaska State Legislative Investigation (LAW) moved on the investigation of the Firing of the Alaska State Public Safety Commissioner.

Gov.Sarah Palin “IS” found “GUILTY” by The Alaska State Legislature [60] Lawmakers, [Mostly Republicans] .in the Investigation of Firing" The Chief of The Alaska State Public Safety Commissioner, Walt Monegan.

TROOPERGATE: In plain English, Sarah Palin has been legally PROVEN that she broke the Alaska State Ethics Law in ABUSING HER power in pushing for the firing of a State Trooper once married to her sister and by also ALLOWING her husband Todd Palin to use the Alaska Governor's Office in a crusade against the Officer. She is charged with 18 Ethic Violation Facts.

Currently the State of Alaska Personnel Board [appointed by Sara Palin} hired a private Investigator to continue the “Troopergate Investigation” on possible OTHER Ethic Violations which Palin allowed HER appointed Administration to participate in. Sarah Palins appointed State of Alaska, Attorney General Colberg, cannot participate to defend Gov. Palin or to defend her Administration. Why? Because he also is in conflict of interest

ALASKA GOVERNOR RECALL!
I am an Alaskan life voting Republican. This 2008 Election, I will [with pleasure] vote Democrat!

This Alaska Governor Palin has Destroyed and continues to attempt to Destroy "MANY GOOD ALASKAN PEOPLE(s)” Professionally and Politically during her "VERY SHORT" term position as Mayor in a small community Wasilla, Ak (Approx 5,000 + residents during her reign) and currently the Alaska State Governor.

McCain’s V.P. selection Sarah Palin unequivocally has NO business being the Alaska Governor, let alone, a USA Candidate for Vice President…..

Maverick??.....”AMERICA SHOULD BE FEARFULLY CONCERNED”

I voted for Sarah Palin in Alaskans 2006 Governor Election. MISTAKE!.... Never Again… I repeat-NEVER AGAIN!!....Alaska Governor Palin is an absolute Embarrassment to the Alaska People(s) and "IS PROVEN” Over and Over to be an insatiable LIAR!!..
.
How can she possibly ASSUME to possess the ability to clean up America, when she cannot clean the progressive ''MESS" She has created, then left Alaska to run for the United States V.P. Yes, she .departed leaving “HERSELF and HER husband todd palins” Mess FOR Alaskans to Clean-Up!!

MCCAIN, you should be ASHAMED of yourself!!!! This victim (palin) has no business in this Presidential Arena.

Great! We've become a modern day Rome. Nero fiddled while Rome burned and now - while Americans are losing their homes, their jobs and their health insurance - not to mention their retirement savings - McCain has spent over $8K on makeup and Palin's spent $150 clothes!

And McCain accused Obama of being a celebrity?

Posted by: laSerenissima | October 22, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

It is amazing how some continue to demonize Senator Obama even as he proves his humanity. Does that make these posters inhumane? Or merely dangerous to our democracy? The pressing danger facing us now is that of a Todd Palin WH. The parallels with Weimar Germany and the rise of the thuggish Nazis who essentially took over a civilized nation and opened the gates to its demons are scary. I am expecting a Republican victory, through voting machine cheating.
