Biden Visit Drives One Small Business Owner Off Deep End

Vice President Biden's visit to a dilapidated train station in Laurel, Md., today to promote the economic stimulus package sent at least one local business owner over the edge.

Tim Abell, co-owner of Security Vault Works, which is a stone's throw from the train station, was so irate about Biden's security detail shutting down the street in front of his firm that he threatened to barrel down the street in his Cadillac Escalade EXT truck until police stopped him.

"Can you believe this crap," Abell groused in an email to friends after local police advised him his street would be closed from 8:30 a.m. to noon. "I have called the Mayor of Laurel, the City Administrator, and the Chief of Police. I have informed them that if they do not resend [sic] this directive, that I have no choice but to perform an act of civil disobedience and drive my vehicle down the road until they arrest me."

Luckily for Abell, come this morning, a voice of reason took control.

That would be his wife, Linda Abell, the primary owner of their firm, which sells ATMs and other bank equipment to Wachovia, Bank of America and other big banks.

"Linda said, 'We don't really want to get arrested,'" Abell tells the Sleuth, acknowledging, "I kind of went off the deep end."

But she did encourage him to hang an oversize sign of protest from the roof of their company that read: PROUD TO BE A CAPITALIST.

Abell complained that while Biden was there ostensibly to tout the president's economic stimulus plan, what he was doing to Laurel, in effect, by shutting down transportation of goods and services for 3 ½ hours was "not economic stimulus, it was just the opposite...How ironic."

But when he was up on his roof hanging the sign, Adell looked around and realized there would be Secret Service snipers on the rooftops around him when he planned his little act of civil disobedience. "It was a little scary to think about," he said, chuckling.

The sign - which would have been hard to miss - got no reaction from Biden at all, he said. "Absolutely none."

Adell, a self-described "big-time Republican," said his employees went outside to see Biden's motorcade go by and hear him speak on the MARC station platform. But he didn't. He had work to do. But it wasn't about politics.

Asked if he would have been as upset had the visitor been Dick Cheney instead of Joe Biden visiting Laurel and preventing his firm from making their deliveries, Adell said, "I'd a been pissed off if it had been W."

Way to go Mr. Abell. I totally support you in this. It is a joke to promote economic stimulus while stopping businesses from working.

It is a typical hypocritical stance that politicians take, like Biden mocking Chief Justice Roberts for a flub in the oath and then butchering several himself, including Hillary's.

Maybe if Joe Biden had actually had a real job over the past 30 years, of course there was that honorary teaching position, he would know what it means to disrupt a company trying to employ people and make enough money to pay taxes to that great financial sucking sound called Big Government!

Thanks for sticking up for all the real people who make this country work, the small business owners.

Thanks, Tim the American!

Well Mr. Abell should put the small business in his name instead of his wife's since he so proud to be a capitalist. Wonder how many woman-owned set asides Mr. Capitalist receives by having his wife listed as the primary owner of the company. Thanks for pointing out that tid-bit sleuth.

Just to set a record straight, the business is my wife's name as she has worked for this company and makes every Excutive decision that has been made since it was started 24 years ago. I do not have a problem taking direction from a women. We do not do work for the Government and the Women Owned brings the firm nothing as we are a very specialized business.

I'm not quite sure what the point is that Mr. Abell was trying to make - unless it's how to get a lot of free PR!

First, the security policy of closing streets, etc. has been in place for many years; Mr. Abell is either demonstrating his ignorance of how things work when a VP or Pres visits, or he is personifying the "sore loser" behavior.

Second, I would question how much the closing of his street truly affected their business: The description of Mr. Abell's business hardly sounds like it is at all dependent on walk-in trade - hence VP Biden's visit might be an inconvenience, but not a significant hindrance in Mr. Abell's ability to conduct business.

However, Mr Abell must be complimented on his largess in allowing his employees to watch VP Biden's motorcade and allowing them to attend his remarks. And a big tip of the hat to Mr. Abell for getting his wife's business's name national exposure - you can't buy this kind of Public Relations!

I've got an idea! Don't pay your taxes; you'll get nominated to a cabinet position (that seems to be the requirement); then you can explain to these pin-headed socialist wonks what it means to run a successful business; employ numerous people who actually pay taxes, consume goods and services, and actually "STIMULATE" the economy. Way to go Tim!

And to DARLAMC and her NEWLIB friend--your true liberal colors shine through! Which are your anger at anyone who achieves success. If you knew Mr. Abell's business you would know how uneducated your comments and how they actually prove the point that because of over-regulation by the government businesses are forced to do things so that they can simply compete. You'll never understand because you want the nanny-state to be responsible for you. How about trying it yourself?

WHAT A GREAT GUY AND GAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT'S A REAL AMERICAN .....I HOPE HE AND HIS WIFE MAKE MORE THIS YEAR THAN BIDEN AND OBAMA PUT TOGETHER.............................

THAT'S WHAT AMERICA IS ALL ABOUT......

It is quite evident that this man doesn't have the sense to run a business. His wife seems to have a much better perspective about the world around her and her business. He admits that the business has been in her name for over 24 years and based on his stupidity it should remain that way.

This guy is part of the problem in this country...sad but true. Whether he is a Republican or Democrat at the end of the day he is still an American. If this had been Cheney or Bush and others had been so mad he would have defended these criminals and been standing on the front row of their speech.

Mr. Abell, show some respect and be a good American.

Just a quick note: According to Mr. Abell's website,

Since 1985, SVW has worked closely with the banking industry and government clients, offering turnkey vault installations. We are experienced in secure and modular vaults and in vault expansions. Although "vault" is an important part of our identity, it hardly begins to describe us. As with the fluid financial services market we serve, flexibility and range of services are the keys to our competitiveness and success.

Ok, so earlier you posted you do not work for the government- I get that...however, YOUR small business has worked with the government since 1985? Did you guys build a special vault for the 'banking industry' boys to house all the tax-payer money going for the big bonuses and decorating budgets?

Posted by: darlamc | February 6, 2009 10:57 AM | Report abuse

I live in a city that has become a hot bed for movie making...it is not unusual for streets to be blocked off for days. Does your business depend on sales from walk-ins? Next time you watch television or go to a movie, realize how many other businesses were "inconvenienced" for your viewing pleasure. I think you're just complaining because you didn't vote for Obama and you just wanted an excuse to rant.

Another JOE THE SIX PACK going to give us more advise ? or maybe we do not deserve this fine capitalist. And for this WBE and her husband, I wonder if either of them can explain a derivative or a credit swap?

A business that sells vaults to banks depends on customers and parts suppliers walking into the store??? I'd be interested to see the delivery options offered by Mr. Abell.

I really find it hard to believe that Mr. Abell's business was impacted negatively. Maybe he was upset that he couldn't get out to pick up coffee this morning. Somehow I doubt his customers were all that upset by deliveries being delayed a few hours.

“That would be his wife, Linda Abell, the primary owner of their firm, which sells ATMs and other bank equipment to Wachovia, Bank of America and other big banks.”

So here is another smart businessman who puts the business in his wife’s name to take tax advantages for being a “Minority and Women-Owned Business”.
I wonder how many bank managers could not drive up to load their 1000 lb. ATM machines into the trunk of their cars at 8:30 in the morning?

Ordinary Taxpayers 100%

Hey SWOS, in case you haven't heard, John McCain gave more for this country in blood, sweat, courage, determination and perseverance in Vietnam than Joe Biden ever has in his entire life.

Heck, Biden is so out-of-touch, he doesn't even know how many letters are in the word JOBS.

"Look, John's last-minute economic plan does nothing to tackle the number-one job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S, jobs."

In fact, here is probably the only thing Biden knows about small businesses:

"You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.... I'm not joking."

It is amazing how the Washington Post conspires to report as news worthy an item that is strictly political, has no merit, is irrelevant, the action is down right idiotic, and the threats made should be pursued for this individual's plan to hurt the Vice-President of the United States by barreling down the street in his automobile. I want to see the p[people that make these types of threats charged with a felony, It is a criminal attempt and it is not freedom of speech. This person seems to be a political hack that wanted to make points with his politically inclined buddies. Enough is enough. Let these people go back into the woodwork and quit giving them their fifteen minutes of infamous fame. Seems he wanted to commit suicide by cop or suicide by Secret Service Agents until his wife allegedly talked him out of it. At the very least he should be arrested, fingerprinted, and prosecuted. He is dangerous.

BTW, do you live anywhere near a facility we can put the Gitmo boys? Maybe they could spend some weekends with you on an out-reach program?

While I find this story interesting from the perspective as another small business owner (I own three), I also am unsure that whining about the disruption to business because of Biden's visit was truly necessary? But we are a country that still honors freedom of speech (thank goodness) and if Mr. Abell felt compelled to say something that strongly I'm glad that he was able to do so and wasn't jailed because he did.

On a completely OTHER matter:

Mary Ann, I wish you would please take over for Diane Rehm. Please! You're in Washington. You're very close to the WAMU station. Go in and take over. Her voice just makes me cringe. We need you back on the radio!

One of the unfortunate side effects about the preference for women-owned and minority-owned businesses, which I support, is that it now leads to skepticism as to whether the official "owner" is really in charge.

It sounds like she is, in this case, if you read the comments section, as her husband has written in here in the 10:02 am comment. He also notes that in the case of their business being "woman owned" is not a significant financial advantage, just how their business is run.

Although I am an Obama supporter and would have loved to go to this event, I basically like the fact that somebody in America got angry with the current administration, rightly or wrongly, and found a legitimate way to express their views through the First Amendment. In another country they might have had no accepted way to do that. It also was really nice to let the employees go see Biden, so I'm not sure why we are all making such a fuss here or what was the point of the article.

Wonder if Mr Abell was as passionate in his protests and verbal tirades all the times the Bush administration shut down entire cities, freeways and access to homes, hospitals and WORKERS access to get to their J-O-B and/or pick up their kids so GW and his cabalites could drive unimpeded to their donor parties.

Posted by: spritey | February 6, 2009 5:12 PM | Report abuse

I'm sure Mr. Abell thinks he has performed an act of heroism for America by his protest. How silly he is! As someone mentioned above, shutting down street traffic, unfortunately, is now necessary to protect some elected officials. VP Biden is working to improve this country's economy. I feel sure he never knew about or saw the sign. If Mr. Abell really wants to tout his capitalist status, let him roll up his sleeves and help by action...not by putting up signs.

Joe Biden has no problem with Capitalists or even Republicans who choose to protest, unlike the decrepid/antiquated GOP which seems to be totally unable to tell the difference between dissenting Democrats and "dirty commies".

Despite all of R. Limbaugh's fuming, there really IS a BIG difference between the two.

This is the exact problem with our society. When someone is VERY Comfortable with thier life (economically and etc), these people have the inevitable tendency to be upset at anything against their comfort. It really doesn't matter which party one belongs to, but belonging to a party does this and gives a Nuisance of a chance for such individual/s to show off in the guise of whatever they are trying to say. President Obama has to to "roam the country" because the PMS Republicans in Congress have spent every day since the inauguration beating the crap out of the stimulus plan and offering nothing but more tax cuts for the wealthy.

To listen to the fear-mongering righties among us, you'd think Obama was proposing to do nothing while a major American city was under water, leaving its poorest citizens to drown. Oh, wait, the last president already tried that.
