Another DWI For John Sweeney, Alone in Driver's Seat This Time

In the latest from our occasional "Where Are They Now?" series on former members of Congress, we bring you today's news about former congressman John Sweeney, a Republican from upstate New York. Sweeney reportedly was arrested in the wee hours Sunday morning for driving while intoxicated, his second DWI in 17 months.

Sweeney, 53, was stopped at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday and charged with a felony, according to the Albany Times Union. Since he refused to get out of the car and take a breathalyzer test, Sweeney automatically loses his license for a year. And because of his prior drunken-driving conviction, he got felony treatment.

A police report obtained by the Times Union said Sweeney smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. He reportedly told his arresting officers he was in "big trouble."

But at least he was only person in the driver's seat this time around. The last time Sweeney was pulled over for drunken driving in late 2007, police found a young woman sitting on his lap.

Sweeney has a history of more than just drunk driving, with or without a rider on his lap.

Three years ago, during his failed reelection campaign, Sweeney was photographed at a boozy on-campus frat party at Union College, which isn't even in the former lawmaker's district.

On the eve of his reelection defeat, Sweeney had to defend reports about a leaked 911 document suggesting police had responded to a domestic dispute situation involving Sweeney and his now ex-wife, Gayle Sweeney.

A die-hard Yankees fan, Sweeney came to fisticuffs with a Red Sox fan at a bar in Washington in 2005 when their rivalry smack talk went a little too far. (Read the second item in this "Rush & Molloy" column.)

Sweeney was defeated in November 2006 by Kirsten Gillibrand, who went on to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Senate.

Suffice it to say, don't expect Sweeney to make a political comeback any time soon.

How exactly does this qualify as a news story? I guess if the Post thinks this is more worthy of space (real or virtual) than hard news reporting, we are in serious trouble as a society.

No wonder newspapers are folding left and right!

thinman1, that's why you're not a reporter. This is a legitimate news story.

I live in Sweeney's old district and this guy is trouble. Entitled, alcholic, and out of control.

Oh yeah, he was also a rising star in the Repubican party before he got beat by Gillibrand.

A FORMER Member of Congress getting nailed (agains!) for DUI is a news story?!?!?!? On what planet?

Wow, never miss a shot, do you?

Where is your in depth, concise reporting of Biden's daughter cramming cocaine up her nose?

Not newsworthy enough? Or are you too busy following former republican members around?

Maybe you could do some really difficult reporting on the administration members who have taken millions from the financial sector they now want to run?

Maybe go back into Chris Dodd's father's troubles and his financial issues.

Maybe do some looking into how much money Obama and his friends took from Wall Street and their private little piggy banks - Freddie and Fannie.

Nah, that would require doing reporter stuff. Screw that, right?

The Biden coke story was reported ni a supermarket tabloid. But then again, that's the sort of trash I expect from a Republican.

Still, you are right in that this Sweeney thing is a bullsh*t story.

He and Vinny from Staten Island have this thing about driving around with those hats with beer cups and tubes. Desperate cry for help, although Sweeney at least does not have 2 wives and 2 sets of mutant offspring.

VirginiaConservative: Nice dodge and weave here, but the topic is John Sweeney, not the Democrats you hate.
If you have any principles, you will condemn Sweeney's erratic and irresponsible behavior, just as I will condemn Biden's daughter.
Or, is it always OK for a Republican?

Maybe not front page news - but as a public person, which he became when he ran for office, it is certainly worth noting somewhere in the paper.

This is not the front page of the Post. It is an online BLOG, not a news story. The standards for inclusion in a blog are different.

The story is "how the mighty have fallen" and "there he goes again". It's not earth-shaking, but it beats "Experts predict average Atlantic hurricane season" on USA today!

Slow news day. Thats probably a good thing.

This is of course news. In fact it's one of the key areas to get real information about alcoholism, irresponsible drinking and driving via a public figure that people will pay attention to. Unfortunately Joe Blow in Iowa wouldn't rate the news but this is a serious topic that affects us all. Good job.

You can tell if an article is worth reading by looking at the headline. If you don't think the subject is something you want to read then don't read it. Do you think the Post excluded more important content to run this story? I don't

I think the reason behind the displeasure with the Post by conservatives over the running of this article has to do more with the anger over the fact that their party is full of sexual deviants, drunks and murderers.

JamesGreen1 -- This one's for you.

Bill Clinton -- Married, got BJs from Monica in the White House, lied under oath, and pointed his finger at the American people and lied to them. Showed his contempt for any moral values when he pardoned CONVICTED CHILD MOLESTER Democratic Congressman Mel Reynolds.

John Edwards -- Presidential candidate, VP candidate, Senator, and decided to bonk a campaign consultant while his wife was dying of cancer, and then lied about it.

Eliot Spitzer -- Considered the next great Democrat sure to win the presidency. Married Governor of New York and former prosecutor of prostitution who decided to commit adultery with high-priced prostitute on a regular basis.

Barney Frank – Had sex with a male intern who he hired to work for him, and then used Congressional office to fix intern’s parking tickets and pressure probation officers. Frank’s lover ran a male prostitution business out of Frank’s home for almost two years.

Every party has its black sheep, but they’re seldom the President, candidate for President and Vice-President (Edwards); the next great candidate for President (Spitzer), and the repeatedly re-elected (why?) architect of the Fannie Mae/Freddic Mac disaster (Frank) who had a male prostitution business running out of his house. These men are your standard bearers? They barely have standards.

CaptainQ, you're correct on everything except Frank being responsible for Fannie/Freddie. I'll have to research that one.

The point you're missing is that when it comes to sexual issues, Democrats have no problem admitting to the truth of their behavior. Rethuglicans, on the other hand, constantly lie about such things, and even speak out against exactly the things they are personally guilty of doing. At the very least, that's amazing hypocrisy.
