Where Are They Now: Cynthia McKinney Strikes Again

Somehow we didn't think we had seen the last of Cynthia McKinney.

The former controversial congresswoman from Georgia has resurfaced - on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea trying to deliver supplies to Gaza.

Israeli forces arrested McKinney and other passengers on board the ship, according to a group called Free Gaza, which said on its Web site that McKinney and the others "have been illegally incarcerated for their solidarity work with Palestine."

The Israeli Consulate General of Israel in Atlanta, however, accused McKinney and her fellow travelers of waging a "reckless political stunt."

McKinney ran for president in 2008 as a Green Party candidate. She was defeated for reelection to the House in 2006, not long after she was accused of punching a Capitol Police officer who mistook her for a tourist. She had made a brief comeback after being defeated in 2002, at which time her father said he blamed the "J-E-W-S" for his daughter's defeat.

Read more about McKinney's arrest off the coast of the Gaza Strip on Atlanta's site.

This woman is a racist who has a history of exhibiting hatred toward any one not of color and Jews. She deserves to be where she is right now...once again in jail.

She is a hero. How many politicians have stood up to the evil that is AIPAC?

Lock her up and throw away the key.

Regardless of who she is or what she has done, she is an American citizen who has been arrested without probable cause and is being held against her will. When will President Obama stand up and say something?

So are you saying that her father is not telling the truth about Zionist money going to her opponents because McKinney opposed things that normal people would oppose like torture and bombing countries who have imaginary weapons of mass destruction?

Posted by: instantkarma_m | July 1, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

This woman was on a boat with an international crew and other humanitarians delivering aid to the Gazans which are under seige and blockade by the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces). Most Americans don't even know about this much less care. They were in INTERNATIONAL WATERS, so this makes this crime by the Israelis kidnapping and piracy. This article gives the timeline of Cynthia's service as a Congresswoman but no mention of the position and the article makes it sound like she ran for President all these different times. (Defeated by what?) Very misleading, biased and flawed.

Has McKinney acted to protect the Iranian people? The Lebanese? The Kurds? Any of the oppressed citizens in countries of Africa?? Oops, they're not Jews so they can't benefit from McKinney's healing justice. Soon enough, she'll be back in the headlines and in the U.S., slugging cops.

Instead of writing about the FACT that a small boat carrying much needed humanitarian and construction supplies to Gaza was forcibly boarded and activists illegally arrested and incarcerated by Israeli forces, Ms. Akers wants to create a story about Cynthia McKinney. Give these courageous activists (including Ms. McKinney) huge credit, for trying to do what AIPAC has hindered our own (U.S.) government from doing ... and that is to support JUSTICE in the Middle East. Israel's oppression, occupation, dehumanization, racism, apartheid, collective punishment, terrorism and more must be brought to America's attention. Israel is a DESPISED state. It will never, ever, ever have security, and it's grip on U.S. foreign policy will one day end. No more $3 Billion of our tax dollars to support this Zionazi state!! No more armament including fighter jets and helicopters, no more kowtowing to Israel!! Please be assured that I'm JEW. Read about Albert Einstein's warnings about Fascist Zionism in Israel. Real Jews don't put their religion, nationalism or politics before their humanity.

I don't know why the author of this piece is taking issue with Cynthia McKinney's attempts to bring humanitarian aid to a people who are desperately in need of it. Are ad hominem attacks your only specialty? In future please try and present an article based on facts and not your own narrow minded opinions and prejudices.

Posted by: pedron | July 1, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Mary Ann you said you would write a humorous column with expose es. Well, the arrest of an American citizen on a humanitarian mission is not humorous. Nor does the arrogant flouting of international law by the Israelis make me laugh. Was that your goal?

Posted by: readlife | July 1, 2009 10:53 PM | Report abuse

Why would the author attack the credability of a former congress women in an article about human rights activist being abducted? More importantly what do her fathers comments have to do with anything? I thought we only suppose to hold people accountable for the words that come out of their own mouths. We are aware that the author had space constraints, so why waste valuble words attacking Cynthia Mckinney. It looks like a hit peace in my opinion, written by Pro Israel apologist trying to move attention away what is a crime under international law. From what I have read a law suite against the Israeli navy will be filed in Greece where the boat is registered. I also wish the author bothered to mention the previous humanitarian boat that was rammed and nearly sunk by Israeli navy. The thuggish behavior of the IDF needs to stop along with the apologist in the media.

In light of the Amnesty report just out that shows Israel's horrible crimes in the War on Gaza, does the Post think it is a Good Idea(tm) for one of your columnists to make light of the arrest of a former US Congresswoman on a humanitarian mission from international waters to Gaza?

A much better story would have been how Israel is using collective punishment of a captive people, 1.5 million Gazans, to elicit a political outcome favorable to the occupier.

That is the definition of State Terrorism.

For those of us who watched it live, this article is an abomination against humanity and the Post should make amends.

Maybe a nice in-depth story about the rights to territorial waters that Gaza has, as opposed to what Israel is currently imposing.

You can include how more than 45,000 Gaza fisherman and those that depend on their industry are out of luck because if they put out to sea to get where the fish are, Israeli Navy boats are like as not to make them take off all their clothes and swim to the navy boat, where they are then chained and arrested for fishing in their waters.

Perhaps you could cover the agreements Israel has signed regarding those rights and some of the stories such as the one I mention above rather than making a character attack on a former US Congresswoman.

This article is about Israel and Gaza.

All those other countries you mention don't figure into it.

Yet another disingenuous article on the subject.

What a shameful attempt to obfuscate and issue. Gaza is held in a cage, dehumanized and oppressed daily and is in dire need of supplies. Not only are the harassed by the IDF but there is also constant terrorist attacks by the ILLEGAL settlers stealing what little land they have left.

Yes, it was a stunt BECAUSE the issue gets ignored by people like Mary Ann Akers.

Ms. Akers,

Thank you for this worthless scrawl that I'm sure you deign to call an "article." I'm not sure why you were talking to an Israeli Consulate in Atlanta, as opposed to someone in Israel or at the very least in D.C. (where you work!), but it is obvious that in writing it you had no intention of creating anything that might remotely resemble journalism. Now I know that I needn't bother reading a single word you write, as it would be a waste of my time and energy. Good luck in your propaganda career, Zionist shill!

Posted by: krash2fast | July 1, 2009 11:29 PM | Report abuse

OK Folks, back up a second here:

Put aside politics for a moment and lets talk about the rule of law.

McKinney was stopped and detained in international waters by a foreign country. This is illegal. Let me repeat: This is illegal. Has there been a single mention of this anywhere? No. Note that very recently, the US did NOT board a N. Korean ship which may or may not have had 'illegal contraband'. Why? Because it is illegal in international waters.

Whether you side with Israel or side with Palestine, it does not matter. This is an illegal act that, if perpetrated upon a state ship, is legally an act of war.

The fact that this issue is being presented in the above manner, is beyond pathetic.

Don't steal, don't cheat, don't break the law. Governments hate the competition.

This article should read "Former U.S. Congresswoman abucted by Isreali Forces in International Waters". If reader comments include personal attacks, they are removed. Shouldn't Mary Ann Akers comply with this rule in her article?

I would love to put myself and Ms. Akers in a time machine and see how she would have reported on an attempt to break the seige of the Warsaw Ghetto. What is happening now in Gaza is the nearest instance of history repeating itself since the Nazi imprisonment of Jews in Warsaw in WWII.

I have followed Cynthia McKinney's career now for 17 years, and I find her to be an intelligent, compassionate, courageous and principled woman. We need more like her.

I will say that it was illegal for Israeli navy to arrest and detain the boat people if they were in international waters.
If it is proven than Israel must pay the price and all those responsible must be punished in NY court system like the Somali pirate.
IDF will have better chances to be acquitted in NY court system than in Hague or even in Israel.......:).

Mary Ann Akers,

A nobel peace prize winner (Mairead Maguire) and 20 other international human rights workers are kidnapped from international waters by the IDF because they intended to bring medicine, toys and olive trees into the concentration camp of Gaza...but the fact that Cynthia McKinney was also on that ship is all your readers need know, right? You have distilled the essence of SHILL. You laugh at Cynthia McKinney ... as children die for lack of those most basic medicines, kids who were bombed into burn wards by the very same IDF. I guess it's best not to think about that. Better distract your readers with a hate post on Cynthia McKinney, quick!

Your review of the situation hardly fits the standards of good journalism and I would hope that the Washington Post reviews your ability to publish. Cynthia McKinney and other humanitarian relief workers were kidnapped in international waters by Israeli naval forces. The same navy that murdered dozens of American sailors on the USS Liberty in a premeditated attack on their ship. Your article is attempting to cover up the facts of this crime by attempting to denigrate Congresswoman McKinney. We need more Cynthia McKinney's with the courage to question Donald Rumsfeld on the wargames that provided cover for 9-11 vs. bought and paid for central bankster corporate shills such as yourself. Congresswoman McKinney can hold her head up high... Can you?

Cynthia McKinney is a heroine, traveling to deliver toys and medicines to the inmates of the Zionist gulag of Gaza with Nobel Prize recipient Mairead Maguire. She was kidnapped on the high seas by Israeli pirates and ignored by the 'Israeli' State Department in Washington.

Ms. McKinney stands up for people. She would have been a great president--not a shill for the international bankers, a slave to the FED, a contemptible liar who has reneged on his campaign pledges and continues and expands Bush's wars of aggression based on lies, lies and nothing but lies. Let us restate a fact about Ms. Akers, this article, and the Washington Post for that matter.

Ms. Akers acknowledges that she got info from the israelis' Atlanta Consulate. Consulates are PR firms, among other things. This is an Israeli (Jewish) PR firm. One would have to assume that they would put their SPIN on the issue. But I also have to assume that Ms. Akers is a Jew, given her name. She works for a paper that is unabashedly pro-Israel, pro-Jew. So do you really expect to see the TRUTH here?

I reiterate, ALL Jews and their shabbas goy sympathizers should be deported so they no longer afflict the rest of us with their politics, attitudes, and self-serving belief system.

She was arressted in International Waters at gunpoint along with Nobel Prize winner Mairead Maguire. According to Public Security Minister Avi Dichter they are allowing food aid into Gaza. Clearly Israel is not, and they have illegally arrested U.S., U.K., and Australian citizens in International waters. That Gov't should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

To me it is fascinating that they cry and wring their hands and beg for sympathy whenever the Holocaust is mentioned, but have no problem whatsoever running one themselves.

The passengers on the boat were not kidnapped and the so called parcels or aid they were bringing is being sent over land into Gaza and they are being sent back to Cypress. Israel is not occupying Gaza, and when they departed Gaza, they they left behind millions of dollars worth of agricultural and industrial facilities which the Arabs destroyed, and when Hamas overthrew the P.A. they declared war on Israel and continued to send rockets into civilian sites. Hamas also murdered hundreds of non supporting Arabs and kept tons of aid sent via Israel for it`s own supporters instead of sharing it with other Palestinians. Bravo to McKinney for a political act that illustrates some of the realities of the siege of Gaza...namely that Israel's pull-out of troops and settlers from their garrison status within that territory doesn't equate with a "total withdrawal" from Gaza, because Israel retains control of Gaza's airspace, coastal waters and borders....not to mention that the IDF continues to attack within that territory whenever it chooses.

Mary Ann Akers like many others at Washington Post is a propaganda mouthpiece for the Jewish lobby. The degree of pro-Israel bias in this story is shocking. No mention of the fact that the ship was carrying food, medicine and toys to Gaza which has been turned into an open air prison by Israel, and no mention that Israel bombarded Gaza for a month. The Jewish controlled media repeats pro-Israel propaganda in order to conceal the crimes of Israel. See below a link to today's story in one of Israel's largest newspaper Haaretz about a cabinet Minister in Israel's government demanding that Arab citizens of Israel be restricted to living in only certain areas. I didn’t see Cynthia McKinney running to Israel when the rockets were falling on innocent people in Israel in the name of human rights! Earlier today an Israeli Navy team boarded and took control of the cargo boat 'Arion' as the vessel illegally attempted to enter the Gaza Strip. In accordance with internationally recognized agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the waters along the Gaza Strip are under Israeli security control and foreign vessels are not permitted to sail into the territory.
What part of the sentence "internationally recognized agreements between Israel and the Palestinian authority" don't you understand.

How about much needed medicines, Medical supplies, building material to starving innocent civilians who live in an open concentration because of the two year old Israeli blockade by land, sea and air. Did you know that Israel only allows one and half trucks a day to enter Gaza, of food and other bare necessities to 1.5 million civilians who live in an area 5 miles wide and ll miles long? I think Cynthia Mckinney is a brave, courageous woman, to risk her life to help the starving people of Gaza. Why not write about the fishermen who cannot go to the fishing areas because they risk being shot or their boats sunk by the brutal Israeli navy, the same Navy that committed an act of piracy when it kidnapped the Spirit of Humanity and abducted its passengers. Why not write about the Palestinians made homeless when Israel bombed their homes or, a few years earlier, bulldozed them. I'm not really sure why Mary Ann Akers is so snarky in her comments regarding former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Has Mary Ann put her money where her mouth is? Is she willing to go and challenge the 4th largest military in the world, a military paid for by Americans' money? Does she think its' OK for the U.S. to send billions to Israel every year so they can murder and maim the indigenous Christian and Muslim Palestinians? Is she OK with putting 1.5 million Palestinians from Gaza into a concentration camp? Seems as though the answer is 'yes' to all of the above. For God's sake people, we pay for this occupation and slow-motion genocide. A US citizen taken from international waters on a humanitarian mission - you should be just as disgusted as we are with your 'reporting'.

Froomkin, pay-for-print, Akers... you guys just keep hammering those nails.

The jew haters are at it again posting pure lies and obfuscations. McKinney was

The article reads as follows...
I hope they keep McKinney in jail so we don't have to deal with her boorish behavior here in the States anymore.
Some posters hate Jews so much that they revert to out and out lies which is typical for the Palin crowd.

Well, this little item on hapless and clueless Cynthia McKinney has surely brought comments from every known supporter of hers in the world. I had no idea there were that many.

Just goes to show you that there were folks who thought Hitler and Mussolini were great men. McKinney, of course, is in no way similar to those evil people. But she has been shown to be a racist, and is generally considered to be one of the most ignorant people ever elected to Congress (Roland Burris having been appointed).

I have no idea what she thought she was accomplishing in Gaza, but I hope she finds incarceration there an uplifting experience.

More wackiness to follow, I am sure.

Given what has happened and this article's slant and the slant of some of the posters, I think it is time to DEPORT all Jews and the shabbas goy sympathizers out of this country. But where to send them, hmmmmm? How about in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?

What a love fest: anti-Semetic blacks vs. racist Jews.

Posted by: coloradodog | July 3, 2009 8:28 AM | Report abuse

Ah, yes, "anti-Semitic" . . .

As Norman G. Finkelstein has so ably pointed out, any time Israel get caught out in something truly dastardly, Israeli supporters, shills, propagandist, what-have-you, play either the anti-Semitic card or the Holocaust card.

Considering the Semitic origins of the Palestinian people, it seems to me that by depriving Gaza inhabitants of even the most basic biological needs as well as the essential psychological need, HOPE, Israel is guilty of anti-Semitic acts on a very grand scale.

Washington Post .. Thanks .. Keep up the good work. By publishing works such as this by Mary Ann Akers and then following it up directly by public comment is an excellent way of getting news out that would otherwise go unpublished.

I've learned a lot from the more intelligently written of these comments. What a good way of allowing us to see beyond and around the typical pro-Israeli media slant.

Thanks again.

The writer gets to write about any subject in whatever style they want, and emphasize whatever points of view they prefer. But keep on blasting each other with those figurative frying pans; it's entertaining ("why I oughta...").

We need more public officials and citizens like Ms. McKinney. America would be sooo much better off if more carried her attitude: take care of Americans and others in need firstly.

She's a brave person, and after her defeat the first time in congress, losing her seat, it took guts to go again, knowing the same powers that be would do their $$ damnest $$ to oust her again. But she didn't give up. And she's back again, doing for others. Yet the sleuth lady tries to scoff at her. What a joke.

And her father was absolutely correct, as that's where ALL the monies came from to defeat her twice in congress. As for punching the Capitol Policeman, she was right to do so. I've a friend on the force and he has the same attitude the 'victim' has. Racist ba$tard. Why's he a friend? Gotta have 'em in all corners.

Wow -- I'm amazed by the amount of commentary this piece generated. Too bad so much of it is off the mark. I think the criticism of the author for focusing on McKinney or getting a quote from the Atlanta Israeli consulate is unfounded. This is not the news section of the paper -- it is an "inside politics" blog. The focus on McKinney is appropriate. Given she is from Georgia, contacting the consulate in Atlanta makes sense. McKinney is nut job and personally I don't think she's ever motivated by anything but self promotion.

That said, it is quite disappointing that the Post would devote more space to a humorous piece on McKinney's role in this than it did on news reporting on the events. The Post wrote 2 whole sentences on the seizure of the ship which it buried in one of those "digest" columns.

As is evidenced by the comments posted here, the reader is left understanding very little of what happened. Where was the ship when it was seized? Is there an international agreement governing access to Gaza by sea? Does the U.S. recognize it? Does the U.S. government view the arrests as legal? Even if Israel has a right to stop ships approaching Gaza to search for arms, does that allow it to seize food and medical supplies? What was the intended destination of the supplies? Have people in Gaza died because of a lack of the medical supplies seized? How does a blockage on humanitarian supplies to Gaza increase the security of Israel?

Ms. Akers' blog post is fine. The Post's failure to adequately cover a news story in which its readers have shown a lot of interest is shameful.

With all due respect, I find the title of this article misleading, sexist (yes you can be a woman and be sexist), imperialistic, etc.

Cynthia "strikes again"? we won't be able to push her out of our public memory? Why? Because *she* "STRUCK" ...? whom? Do we mean that she was terrorized by Israeli police/navy who are keeping food supplies from needy children in Gaza? Is this how Cynthia "struck" our interests?

Rep. McKinney, one of the leaders of the 9-11 Truth movement, can't seem to decide whether it was the CIA or the Israeli Mossad who blew up the World Trade Center. Her dad thinks the J-E-W-S got her defeated, but maybe it's the fact that she is N-U-T-S.

So some posters are arguing that, when writing weblogs, journalists are allowed to throw out all the prevailing ethics and standards of normal journalistic endeavors?

Sorry, I don't buy it. For one thing, if the Washington Post wants its bloggers to throw out normal journalistic conventions, then why do they have such strict rules about commenters, one of which for example is that there is to be no ad hominem attacks. Indeed, it is ironic as a previous poster noted, that the blogger herself is allowed to get away with an ad hominem attack, while the rest of us would be banned for doing the same thing.

The more salient crime is the one done to the suffering Gaza men, women, and children, whose predicament is given no explanation precisely so that the blogger can exercise her personal animus for McKinney.

Get this through your pea brains, Mainstream journalists; McKinney and any other activist that are trying to bring to light the situation of the long suffering Palestinians are not the story-- they are simply trying to do what the MSM won't do, which is to alert Americans to oppression that Americans themselves are partly responsible for, since they provide, through their tax dollars, about 4 billion dollars a year in aid to Israel. Thanks to the Internet, despite the MSM ignoring what is happening to the Palestinians, the American people are still getting the story. Give them another few years, and Israel will be as unpopular as the despicable Saudi regime for the average American. Funny to see the Washington Post try to defend the indefensible at every turn-- it will be funnier still, when this pathetic rag of a paper finally goes belly up.

Mainstream media used to help keep power in check, but now it vies for power along with the rest of them. Media corporations lobby Congress with campaign money like all of the other special interests. Instead of actual news people, we only get pundits, commentators and "news analysts." Stop towing the lines of AIPAC. None of these countries or group of people are paid subsidies to the tune of 3-4 Billion dollars a year from the US taxpayer’s accounts. With that kind of money, we have a right to question how it is used. The Ayatollah’s don’t get our money, and hence what they do is not subsidized by us. That is the difference UPHILL1. With in depth research like this one wonders why people would ever want to stop buying newspapers.

westcan makes it sound as if Palin and McKinney are champing at the bit to jump in bed with each other just because they hate Jews (ha ha).
Nothing blinds, or creates hate, quite like that kind of unreasoning fear. Just because i object to the mass slaughter of innocent children does not mean i hate Jews, it just means some Jews have cement to build bomb shelters but won't allow Gaza to have cement to build homes. Combined with the best weaponry in the world and a fear of homemade suicide bombs, that is a huge double standard that you cannot attribute to hate i do not have. Cynthia, as well, is not concerned with hating anyone, nor is she concerned with that big fat paycheck "they" (the flying spaghetti monsters) cut you annually for trying to stand up for Palestine, she is concerned with a political movement that has destroyed our nation just to convince us to continue a long tradition of giving 1/4 to 1/3 of our entire foreign aid budget solely in weaponry and destructive machinery to a nation that uses it to bomb and demolish the homes of civilians, flaunt international law more often than all other nations together, and then get away with it because we, a permanent member of the UN security council, have "learned" that breaking the laws we wrote is a such great idea we would like to do so more frequently as well. The fact that such a nation claims to be Jews, despite breaking the covenant in every way, is not my problem, nor is it reason enough for me to hate the children of "Israel". The lobbyists, generals, liars, and murderers, they are doing a pretty good job of engendering hate all by themselves, but pointing that out does not make me an anti-Semite either.
Please, speak to who you are and what you know and do not bother to impute the motives of others, or risk revealing your own blind hate fomented ignorance.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see how her work to ensure that medical supplies and things as simple and harmless as crayons for the children in Gaza requires that you mention her punching a guard? Perhaps other than to cast a negative light and bias on the events. This piece, if it can even be called that, is truly shameful.

Why can't you look at the bigger picture here? Israel boarded a ship, detained and imprisoned activists and humanitarian aid workers and these serious events must overshadowed by stale, irrelevant and old news? Great job...really fantastic Akers!
