Specter, Teary-Eyed But Not Sad (Or Sick)

For a moment today, it sounded as if Sen. Arlen Specter, the Republican-turned-Democrat from Pennsylvania, had undergone a new round of chemotherapy.

"If you've seen me dab at my eyes, I'm not sad," Specter said, wiping away tears during the Senate Judiciary Committee's deliberations on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

"It's, uh, chemotherapy," the 79-year-old senator explained. "And I've made the Kleenex industry wealthy. But I'm glad to say that I'm fit as a fiddle, ready for re-election, I'm not infirm in any way, just a little consequence of chemotherapy."

Specter, who has undergone two rounds of chemotherapy for Hodgkin's disease over the past three years, said he felt compelled to explain his teary-eyed state "because people wonder about it."

Specter's office released a statement clarifying that the senator had not had chemo or other cancer treatment in over a year, or been hit with a recurrence of cancer. "During his comments on Judge Sotomayor, Senator Specter was dabbing his eyes which were tearing," spokeswoman Kate Kelly said. "He explained that he wasn't crying but simply that his eyes tear as a result of chemotherapy which he finished more than a year ago. Subsequent tests have given him a clean bill of health."

Specter could be facing the toughest reelection fight of his career in 2010. He switched parties in April in part because he did not think he could win reelection as a Republican. But when it comes to off-the-cuff comments, he's still the same old Arlen Specter of any political stripe.

Earlier today he made news by defending Sotomayor's infamous "wise Latina" comment, saying, "I think it's a pretty healthy thing to have a little ethnic pride."

As Politico reported, Specter said, "I didn't find fault with the 'wise Latina' comment, I find it commendable. There's nothing wrong with a little ethnic pride."

I thought Sen Specter was right on and his comments "I didn't find fault with the 'wise Latina' comment, I find it commendable. There's nothing wrong with a little ethnic pride."
put those GOP Party of NO senators to shame.

As well as Sen Durbin - NRA is keeping score- and Sen Whitehopuse.

I guess Deacon Coburn - took offense to Sen Durbin.

I take offense to Deacon Coburn.

Why is he on the judicial committee?

You have this 'splaining to do' right wing anti democratic institutional C-Street philosophy critiquing this wise latina judge.

Only in America!

Boy- does he have some splaining to do!

Early June ‘09- Sen. Colburn was asked on C-span to define ‘Socialism’ - People should look that up, C-span.org.

We really need to expose the funding of that housing unit on C Street.

We also need to know if it is law and if so how, an OB/GYN Doctor/Deacon/Oklahoma Senator Coburn- is immune from answering questions from any law in this country regarding his advice to bribe Senator Ensign's mistress and her family -

Please explain that?

Deacon Coburn of OK - advising Ensign of NV how to bribe his mistress and her family!

"Mr. Hampton (husband of mistress) added that Coburn confronted Ensign and urged him to provide millions of dollars in assistance to the Hamptons to pay off their mortgage..."

Where would those millions come from Deacon Coburn?

Are bribes legal through one of bush's signing statements?

Is extortion legal through one of bush's signing statements?

Will Deacon Coburn tell us how many guns are allowed at the C- Street residence in DC; now that the SCOTUS has overruled the DC city council?

Deacon Coburn- you got some splaining to do!

Oh- GUNS in the National Parks too - snuck in a Credit Card Bill to protect consumers.

Another bribery skill -

Bravo Mr. Specter; why would the white Americans be proud and why would deny other ethnic groups to be proud of their ethnicity?
At least you prove to me that you are a Born Again Democrat.

Under; 'One Man One Vote' because he changed parties after a general election he would be given a percentage of the preceding voting district, so their is no jurisdiction left to his old district.
