23 District of Columbia's Small and Local Business Development Office is hosting a small business legal clinic from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St., NW, Basement Floor, Room A-1. Existing or aspiring small business owners can meet one-on-one with attorneys to discuss business formation, contracts, leases, taxes or other legal matters related to running a small business. Please bring any legal documents you wish to discuss.

29 Network Solutions presents a series of videos and live discussions featuring business and marketing experts discussing how the Internet can benefit a business. The event runs from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

NOVEMBER

3 District of Columbia's Enhanced Business Information Center is hosting a workshop "Exploring Entrepreneurship" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St., NW in Washington, D.C. This workshop will provide a chance for emerging and existing entrepreneurs to learn about the nuances of self-employment and entrepreneurship. 4 The IRS is hosting its Tax Talk Today webcast at 2 p.m. on "Preparing for the New Form 990." The new form will be filed in 2009 for the 2008 tax year. The IRS has a Web page with an explanation of the Form 990 redesign and background documents for tax-exempt organizations. Tax Talk Today is aimed at educating tax and payroll professionals on current and complex tax issues. To access the Web cast at no charge, viewers can register online.

5 Why you should care about social networking is the theme of the first in a series of seminars hosted by marketing expert Mayra Ruiz-McPherson. The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Herndon, Va., at the So Addictive Internet Lounge. For the full agenda or to register, click here.

6 The Biotech Startup Lab hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Enterprise Forum will be held at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Md., from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fees range from free to $25.

7-9 The International Franchise Association is hosting the West Coast Franchise Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It is open to the public and designed to allow potential future owners to meet with company representatives and attend seminars. Veterans will be admitted without charge and are invited to attend a free seminar "Franchising 101 for Veterans."

12 The Greater D.C. Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners is hosting Angie Morgan, co-author of "Leading from the Front: No-Excuse Leadership Tactics for Women" and co-founder of LeadStar. She will discuss leadership tactics from her experience as a business leader and as a Marine. The event will be held 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tower Club at 8000 Towers Crescent Dr., 17th Fl. in McLean, Va. Fees range from $50 to $70.

17-23 Global Entrepreneurship Week is a week of activities planned in 56 countries to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship among young people. On Nov. 19, in the Washington, D.C., area, people ages 13 and up are invited to participate in a mini-challenge that measures on-the-spot innovation. Participants will create something of value from ordinary objects such as paper clips or Post-It notes. The event is being held at the Marian Koshland Science Museum from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

20 Learn about doing business with Russia at an event hosted by the Eurasia Center and other groups. The 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. event will be held at the Russian Trade Mission and George Washington University. The cost is $150 if you registered before Oct. 15 and $200 after. DECEMBER

15 Deadline for high school seniors to apply for a scholarship for the 2009 Young Entrepreneur Awards sponsored by the National Federation of Independent Business Young Entrepreneur Foundation. Students can apply for a scholarship online. For the online application process, students will need to enter the access key "NFIB."
