Looking for a Bargain? Why Not Buy Some Stolen Goods--Legally?

Nancy Trejos

Believe it or not, the police condone this practice.

A colleague of mine pointed out an interesting story published yesterday. It turns out that the Prince William County Police Department is one of more than 1,500 law enforcement agencies that work with, a national online auction company, to sell unclaimed stolen, seized or found goods.

Any item that goes unclaimed for at least 60 days can be auctioned. The police split the profit with the auction company. Buyers get bargains on items such as electronic game systems and bicycles.

It's certainly an interesting way to do bargain hunting.
