Exotic Dancers Not So Optimistic

Ylan Mui

Not everyone is putting on (or should I say taking off?) their rose-colored glasses during this recession. The Wall Street Journal has a story today about strip clubs getting rid of amenities amid plummeting sales. The story says clubs are lowering the price of drinks, waiving cover charges and touting their inexpensive food. One dancer said she is making 25 percent less than the pre-recession days. I'm sure the reporter researched this article thoroughly!

But the article does bring up a good question: whether so-called "vice industries" are immune to recessions. I wrote a story in the fall about beer sales going strong despite the economic downturn, but domestic sales have dropped so far this year. Las Vegas has been struggling because people are cutting back on travel. But you know it's bad if even strippers are feeling the pain.

Yes, I do believe the "adult entertainment" industry in New York is suffering, specifically due to the loss of all those Wall Street jobs and the smaller bonuses being handed out. A lawyer here, Ed Hayes, has what he calls the HEGI and the HESI indexes -- the High End Girlfriend Index and the High End Stripper Index -- that measures the economy through its impact on strippers and others who received side benefits from the Wall Street boom years.
Ironically, the downturn comes as more states are looking at imposing "vice taxes" as a way to off-set declining revenue. A new tax on strip clubs has been dubbed a "pole tax."
Anyway, great story, thanks for the link, Ylan.
