Share Your DIY Projects

Do you DIY?
Retailers tell me that they've seen a spike in the number of people looking to tackle projects on their own -- whether it's manicuring their own nails or painting a room. Seed sales have skyrocketed as shoppers plant their own vegetable gardens to save money. Paint and flooring have remained strong sellers at home improvement stores despite weak performance overall in the sector.
Renewed interest in the DIY-movement helped inspire entrepreneur Aaron Price to create a site for enthusiasts to share their projects. Launched in January, Widwi -- which stands for What I Did With It -- allows users to post before-and-after pictures of their handiwork and let others rate it.
“The idea is for people to get their own inspiration and ideas for their own DIY process," Aaron said. He also encourages users to share what they did wrong, adding “sometimes that’s the most valuable lesson.”
Among the most popular entries are a Harley Davidson Memphis Belle sidecar decorated to showcase its patriotic spirit, a blonde who dyed her hair brown and later dyed it back again, and X-rays from arthroscopic knee meniscus surgery (which kind of creeped me out).
Aaron said he is an avid DIY-er and got his start fixing up motorcycles and cars. He has also restained furniture and fixed broken cabinets around his house.
“Sometimes I go looking for problems that aren’t there and make one and fix it," he said.
What was your latest DIY project? Share your story with us and feel free to send us pictures! You can reach me at muiy[at]washpost.com or @ylanmui on Twitter. Our latest projects include installing a ceiling fan and painting a guest bedroom. I had paint stuck under my nails for a few days, but the end result -- and the savings -- was worth it!
