Soccer Insider: February 4, 2007 - February 10, 2007

The Greek

On Friday afternoon I met Alkis Panagoulias for lunch at, of course, the Greek Taverna in McLean. (Order the trout special -- you won't regret it.) For younger inhabitants of Soccer Insider Nation, that name probably means absolutely nothing. To those who have been around a bit or know their...

Local Honors

Friend of Soccer Len Oliver tells me that the Virginia-D.C. Soccer Hall of Fame will induct six new members during ceremonies in Richmond tomorrow. The group will also be honored at halftime of the May 6 DCU match against Chivas USA. Kathy Kelly Erickson (UNC) Gary Etherington (W&M, Cosmos) Lauren...

Embrace the Colors (or Not)

Things are a changin' in Denver. First, the Rapids announce a marketing alliance with Arsenal (personally, I don't think it's a big deal) and then they unveil their new logo and colors. Ladies and gentlemen, your NEW Colorado Rapids!! Good? Bad?...

United Updates

First, an update on the Nolly situation and whether DCU will be compensated by RSL if he does not sign with MLS. Tom Soehn tells me, yes, in fact, United would receive a second-round pick in the 2008 regular draft. Nolly is not completely out of the picture yet, but...

Rumble in London

You would think a friendly between Queen's Park Rangers and the Chinese under-23s would be, well, friendly. Um, no. Check this out....

O Nolly, Where Art Thou?

Sure looking like Jay Nolly will not join DCU anytime soon, but there may be a silver lining from the red-and-black's point of view. I am hearing that, as part of the trade with RSL in December, DCU is set to receive a draft pick of some sort if they...

Rimando Sighting

As we reported here last week, ex-DCU keeper Nick Rimando will definitely not play for Salt Lake this season and is on his way to another MLS club. Dallas and New York were the most likely candidates, with DCU as an outside suitor. Now we have this from my man...

USA 2, Mexico 0 (again)

Some thoughts... -- ESPN should get high marks for production, camera angles, packaging, announcers, pregame, halftime, postgame. The only thing it lacked was high definition. -- Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez showed no class in his foot swipe at Eddie Johnson during the USA celebration following the second goal. Let's see...

USA-MEX ... game comments

Okay, folks, it's just about time. I will join you for the next two-plus hours for thoughts and comments... Anything goes...just keep it clean and somewhat rational...I know, it's Mexico, but this is a family Insider... Release the hounds!...

A Win Is a Win

United's young players and reserves combined to defeat the U.S. under-17 national team, 2-0, in a 60-minute match in Bradenton. Goal scorers: Jamil Walker and Georgetown's Ricky Schramm. Ryan McIntosh played the entire game in goal....

Let's Talk USA-Mexico

The bad news (for me, anyway) is that I will not be attending the USA-MEX showdown in Phoenix tonight. The good news (for me, anyway) is that I will host a special, majestic, inspirational, earth-shaking chat while the match is going on right here at your favorite Soccer Insider blog...

United Signing Alert

Okay, the latest foreign player for United has emerged. His name is Yinka Casal, an Englishman with Nigerian family roots. He's 19 years old and has been with Fulham, primarily the reserves. He's a left-winger. Casal has joined up with United in Florida and the club is planning to sign...

David and Freddy and a Bunch of Other Games

The MLS schedule has been released and the two most anticipated home matches of the season (when Beckham and Adu are here) will not come until late in the year. As we've reported here for weeks, Beckham and the Galaxy will play DCU on Aug. 9, a Thursday night, at...

Rimando Update

Here's the latest... I'm hearing that the Rimando situation will probably be worked out today or tomorrow, with Nick likely heading from RSL to New York or Dallas. DCU is still an outside possibility, but just doesn't have much money to offer him....

Right on Schedule

As I told you guys the other day, the complete MLS schedule will be announced tomorrow/Tuesday -- late morning, most likely. We know about Beckham's RFK appearance (Aug. 9), and from I've been told, Freddy Adu's return will also come late in the year. Like Beckham's, the game is likely...

For Openers...

Okay, so it's only a friendly (closer to a scrimmage, actually), but United will open its preseason schedule Tuesday afternoon in Bradenton, Fla., against Danish club Odense. DCU will still be missing four national team players -- Boswell, Namoff, Carroll and Gros -- but Perkins is back after not being...

Countdown to Kickoff

Sorry, folks, but it's looking less and less likely DCU will be able to put another new foreign acquisition on the field for the first leg of the Champions' Cup quarterfinal series with Olimpia in two-plus weeks. Think about it: Even if the club announced a signing tonight, they would...
