David and Freddy and a Bunch of Other Games

The MLS schedule has been released and the two most anticipated home matches of the season (when Beckham and Adu are here) will not come until late in the year.

As we've reported here for weeks, Beckham and the Galaxy will play DCU on Aug. 9, a Thursday night, at RFK. And as we suspected, Freddy will not make his return until Sept. 26, also a mid-week game. United will play at Salt Lake on June 23, but there's a pretty good chance Freddy will be with the U.S. under-20 national team preparing for the youth World Cup in Canada, which begins a week later.

Other items of note:

-- 19 of DCU's 30 games will be on some sort of national TV outlet (ESPN2, ABC, Telefutura, Fox Soccer Channel, HDNet)

-- DCU is off the third weekend of the season (which is convenient if they advance to the Champions' Cup final and have to play the two legs the Wednesday before and after)

-- DCU will play seven midweek games and seven matches on Sundays

Here's the full schedule

I know this sounds dumb but I can't access the schedule link. (stoopid firewall). Can you post the date of the Toronto away game? Thanks...

Any word on what games Comcast will carry (I'm guessing most of the Direct Kick games)?

This schedule sucks. MLS should be fired. Look at all the Sunday games....Sunday afternoon games! See the orange seats? Did anyone tell MLS that they have better attendance league-wide on Saturday night? We only have seven Saturday night MLS games at home....and go from July 14 to Sept. 29 without a Saturday night home game....they put Freddie's return on a Wednesday night....and the Red Bull home games are Sunday afternoon and Wednesday night...and only once at Red Bull? We play them only three times? In fact, it looks like we play the East only three times. What does do to head-to-head match ups to determine playoff spots?

So as to relieve my fiancee of translating duties, any word on whether Telefutura will offer SAP English audio?

Spanish-English soccer terms.

I really prefer the Spanish guys - in part because I can follow the play-by-play, but my Spanish isn't good enough to follow the color commentary, which, if it's as bad as it usually is in English (and believe me, this isn't limited to soccer...it also includes the NFL, where "the way to win is to score more points than the other guy," or so I'm told), isn't really a bad thing.

"What does do to head-to-head match ups to determine playoff spots?"

then that would be best 2 out of 3, duh.

With all the Sunday games, what does that do to the reserve matches?

Posted by: Chico | February 6, 2007 2:13 PM | Report abuse

Thank you for counting up all the national TV dates. I was too lazy to do it myself.

Posted by: Dave | February 6, 2007 2:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Sunday afternoon games suck.

So both half-season plan A AND B have to buy tickets for the Galaxy game? I'll be surprised if this game, mid-week, even sells out.

Ah, well, duh, dooode, you know, like if you play a team like twice away and once at home, they might like have an advantage...ya know?

So, when we advance to MLS Cup, we have to start drinking at 9AM or do we continue drinking from the night before? Discuss.

Re: Orange Seats

It's because those are the nationally televised Telefutura games. I think the broadcast rights fees they're getting this year more than make up for the attendance hit you're going to see for those days.

I only count 3 Sunday home games. But those are a terrible drain on attendance since they are all during youth soccer season.

MLS makes a stupid schedule every year, why should this one be any different?

Celtic for the all-star game??? They couldn't even stay even with our scrubs.

Orange seats = bad TV.

Half-season and flex packages do NOT get the LA game. You do, however, get put on a priority list to add the LA game at a later date.

Chico, you must have pissed somebody off and really shown lack of productivity if they blocked the DCU website at your work. Congratulations. :)

Can someone please tell me why Colorado has decided to switch its team name from the Rapids to the Arsenal? Can't MLS be a little bit more original. Like instead of using FC (Football Club) they should use SC (Soccer Club). Isn't that the name of the sport in the US? I can only imagine what the name of the Philadelphia team will be, Philadelphia 1776, and AC Miami (after AC Milan of course).

only four home games are on Sundays.

This just in: Adu WILL be available for United's game at Salt Lake in late June. That's according to Real officials. Apparently the under-20 players will not leave their clubs until after that weekend.

09/09 - Sunday New England Revolution

100% chance the PoliticallyIncorrectSkins are home @ 1pm that day, probably against Dallas.

Thx,

Jay!

Can anyone explain why the 4th of July game at KC is at 1 PM???? I thought the point of 4th of July games was to lure people to the stadium with the promise of fireworks after the match. Middle of the day in the middle of July in sweltering KC is pretty stupid.
