Stokes Heading Out

Defender David Stokes's attempt to earn his way back onto United's roster is over.

Stokes, whose contract was not renewed following the 2006 season, will complete his tryout Sunday and won't be offered a new deal, team officials confirmed Saturday.

He is expected to pursue minor league opportunities. His agent, Craig Sharon, did not return a phone message. Stokes spent part of the offseason training with European clubs before joining United on an extended tryout.

Stokes, a Northern Virginia native who was the fifth overall pick in the 2003 draft from North Carolina, played in 24 regular season games and made seven starts in four seasons.
