United Update

Because their practice fields are covered with a thick blanket of snow and slush, United trained indoors at the Dulles Sportsplex today. They're hoping to get back on the regular fields tomorrow.

On a side note, not only does Olimpia have to deal with a three-goal deficit in the series Thursday night at RFK, but they'll obviously have to acclimate to a dramatic climate shift. 87 in Honduras on Thursday, 49 here. Bumpy field in Honduras, perhaps a mushy field here.

A bit of news: United is close to finalizing a preseason match against Honduran club Motagua on March 9 in South Florida. The site will likely be Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, but it's unclear yet whether the match will be considered a true friendly or just a scrimmage. Either way, club officials said, the public will be able to buy tickets. We should know more in the next day or two.

Also, fyi, I might have a pretty interesting United/MLS story in tomorrow's paper. Details to come...

has RFK's field been setup for baseball? are they converting it to soccer just for this match?

Is this the same tease as last week or an entirely new tease?

Posted by: cubicle | February 26, 2007 1:03 PM | Report abuse

I hope that it has something to do with another player acquisition (ala. a defender), but I speculate that it has something to do with Berger's and Graveson's comments on desiring to come to MLS. Perhaps we can find out about Johnny O's whereabouts...

Posted by: fcmuenchweiler | February 26, 2007 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Last week's tease was USA bidding for WC 2018. This week's tease is DCU-oriented, but not player related.

Posted by: Goff | February 26, 2007 1:37 PM | Report abuse

Is it stadium related? I have a feeling it is!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Todd | February 26, 2007 1:39 PM | Report abuse

A trip down to sunny Florida sounds like the ticket.

Posted by: Chico | February 26, 2007 1:52 PM | Report abuse

Freddy Adu traded back to DC United?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Posted by: Steve | February 26, 2007 1:57 PM | Report abuse

I'd also like to know the status of the pitch for Thursday's game. All grass or half-grass, half-infield?

Posted by: l st | February 26, 2007 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Teasor,

If Cubicle is thinking the same way as I, he was referring to last week's tease on player acquisition from Friday. So the question remains, same tease or new tease?

If you want to see the field for yourself, stop by the stadium this evening for The Barra Brava "Meet the Coach" party. Starts at 6:30. Go thru the main entrance, up the elevator to the 4th floor, pass the DC United trophy case and on to the party room. Great opportunity to join the Barra.

Posted by: Chico | February 26, 2007 2:14 PM | Report abuse

What do you mean not player related? Dang.

Posted by: Teasee | February 26, 2007 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Does it have to do with guaranteed spots in the Copa Sudamericana for the top two teams in MLS?

Posted by: Iva | February 26, 2007 2:32 PM | Report abuse

No imminent player acquisitions. Sorry.

Posted by: Goff | February 26, 2007 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Impatiently waiting for tomorrow...

Posted by: fcmuenchweiler | February 26, 2007 3:01 PM | Report abuse

Is DC United suing MLS for emotional damages sustained during the Freddy Adu years?

Or is someone going to eat his/her shoes?

Posted by: Kim | February 26, 2007 3:13 PM | Report abuse

Is it related to the shirt sponsorship? If not, when will we hear something on that?

Posted by: jlm | February 26, 2007 3:18 PM | Report abuse

jlm

According to United's FO, you won't see shirt sponsorship until at least next year.

Since you did not respond "ZZZzzzzz" to the implication that the news is about the stadium, we will run with the story that you are confirming stadium progress. Unless you say no before I hang up...

10...9...8...7...

:)

Is it bigger than a breadbox?

Posted by: Charly | February 26, 2007 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Steve,

I could not find in WP the names of replacements during the game with Olympia. Could you help?

Posted by: Paul | February 26, 2007 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Who ever gets the right answer gets free tickets!!! Yeah right.

Ughh, could it be an article regarding the game on Thursday, and how they have faired in past competitions?

Well, throw in an incentive Mr. Post guy.

Posted by: 1MADDOG | February 26, 2007 3:44 PM | Report abuse

What stadium?

As for replacements, you mean DCU's reserves during the first Olimpia game? If so, Nolly, McTavish, Moose, Walker, Dyachenko, Wilson and deRoux.

Posted by: Goff | February 26, 2007 3:57 PM | Report abuse

I think we're putting pressure on Steve to have something really B-I-G.

Posted by: fcmuenchweiler | February 26, 2007 3:59 PM | Report abuse

Have we been bought by Red Bull? El Diablo is training for a comeback?? Foggy Bottom Beer is back??

Posted by: Rocko | February 26, 2007 4:20 PM | Report abuse

My guess: We're finally going with Alexi Lalas' suggestion of making the goals bigger. Cooler heads have prevailed.

Posted by: Logan Circle | February 26, 2007 4:25 PM | Report abuse

Yes, you guessed it right... it's about MLS getting two guaranteed berths into the Copa Sudamericana.

Posted by: Steve'sAlterEgo | February 26, 2007 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Sudamericana...zzzz...

Posted by: Goff | February 26, 2007 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Maybe it is to announce a partnership with some European club like what the Colorado Rapids just did with Arsenal.

Posted by: Todd | February 26, 2007 4:47 PM | Report abuse

I think Steve actually started this blog for his own amusement. Not only can he tease, but the responses themselves are pure comedy gold.

Posted by: viv | February 26, 2007 5:09 PM | Report abuse

ok, folks back to the issue at hand. Steve says an intersting DCU/MLS related story. What could that be? Will DCU be representing MLS somewhere we hadn't heard about yet? Is it just DCU/MLS related or could it be LA/MLS Houstan/MLS etc., etc., plus DCU/MLS? Not player related, so think what could relate to the whole team and the league at the same time. I'm going to go with representing DCU in a new tourney between MLS/EPL? Yes its a limb, but its my limb. :)

Posted by: Dan | February 26, 2007 5:19 PM | Report abuse

The story will have mainstream interest, which eliminates most of the things that have been mentioned.

Posted by: Goff | February 26, 2007 5:24 PM | Report abuse

hmmm....

youth initiative and inner city team sponsored youth league?

Posted by: bluemeanies | February 26, 2007 5:50 PM | Report abuse

My sources say DC United have signed Abby Wambach, making her the first female in American men's professional sports history.

Posted by: Matt | February 26, 2007 5:51 PM | Report abuse

Zidane just signed with the league. And Klinsmann will lead the US national team.

Posted by: Jamie Trecker | February 26, 2007 5:52 PM | Report abuse

And my final (3rd) guess/attempted joke:

Nick Rimando has just been traded, again, back to DC United.

Posted by: Matt | February 26, 2007 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Can I put it in my mouth?

Posted by: Ty | February 26, 2007 6:23 PM | Report abuse

Ty,

I get a lot of offers like that, but I must respectfully decline. Gotta keep clean!

Posted by: The Dude | February 26, 2007 6:42 PM | Report abuse

Is it a player (Boswell?) that is going to be on a TV Show?

Posted by: Black n Read Head | February 26, 2007 6:49 PM | Report abuse

Goff -
please tell me they're going to be DC United Womens team and not the damned freedom. That star with a ponytail would make even bluto blutarsky grow breasts f he stared at it too long.

Posted by: DCAustinite | February 26, 2007 7:03 PM | Report abuse

Ok, this is not really fun. Steve do you have younder siblings that you were mentally cruel to?

Fine, we'll all play your little game. MLS/DCU related with mainstream interest. Ok, relaunching of women's pro league in the mold of NBA/WNBA? Wouldn't there have been more rumblings of this?

Stadium would certainly have mainstream interest, at least locally.

Only other thing I can think of is a well known player in the DP slot but you've said it won't be that.

Oh the suspense is killing me :)

Posted by: Dan | February 26, 2007 7:42 PM | Report abuse

ummm that should have been younger

Posted by: Dan | February 26, 2007 7:43 PM | Report abuse

As far as the field goes I would guess it hasn't been touched since the playoffs.

Posted by: Glenn | February 26, 2007 7:48 PM | Report abuse

"The story will have mainstream interest, which eliminates most of the things that have been mentioned."

You saying the folks who read this don't represent the mainstream?? :-}

Posted by: ff | February 26, 2007 8:08 PM | Report abuse

MLS booked some pop princess to play pregame or at halftime of opening day in Colorado... that's my guess.

Posted by: AC in Falls Church | February 26, 2007 9:08 PM | Report abuse

DCU/MLS/Mainstream.......Boz must have gotten engaged to Sporty or Scary Spice.

Posted by: Eric Z | February 26, 2007 10:07 PM | Report abuse

Prince is doing the halftime show at MLS Cup?

Posted by: Rocko | February 26, 2007 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Boz is the father of Scary Spice's child.
