Soccer Insider: April 22, 2007 - April 28, 2007

The Aftermath (It Ain't Pretty)

Well, look at it this way: Toronto hasn't won either and they haven't even scored a goal. So DCU has got that going for them, which is nice. ;-) I'll pass along my player ratings first. And then you can read some bonus quotes at the bottom. My game report...

Me-ow!

Ferguson vs. Mourinho! Sir Alex vs. Jose! Well now, this ought to be a fun final few weeks in the Premiership. Why can't we get a nasty MLS coaching spat like this? (Paging Mr. Nowak.....) Listen to this Mourinho parody from Ireland's Today FM:...

Slow Day. Q&A?

Not much going on. Moose was back at training today for DCU after taking a boot to the face yesterday. UEFA Cup semis (aka La Liga tournament) this afternoon. One MLS match tonight on ESPN2 (and it's a pretty good one -- Dallas v. N.Y.). Still no DCU stadium..... If...

This Is How You Counterattack

Carvalho breaks out and leads Drogba in stride. Drogba's strength and technique are too much. Cole makes a perfect run and one-times with a sliding left-footer. Chelsea 1, Liverpool 0. (Love the color commentary.) So what happens in the second legs next week? I'll say Chelsea ties at Anfield to...

Beware of Moose

DCU's Justin Moose was taken to the hospital after getting kicked in the face by Facundo Erpen while going for a header in the box during training today. "Total accident," one trustworthy eyewitness reports. Moose is expected to be available for this weekend's league match and reserve game in Columbus....

Cruyff's Sweet 60th

Thanks to Insider loyalist Ralph for reminding me that today is the incomparable Johan Cruyff's 60th birthday. In honor of the occasion -- and the one-and-a-half seasons he spent at RFK Stadium in 1980-81 as a member of the Washington Diplomats -- I dug up a breathtaking highlight film of...

Herron Suspended

As expected, Columbus forward Andy Herron has received a multiple-game suspension for elbowing New England's Jay Heaps in the face last week, sources confirmed tonight. The number of games will be revealed by MLS on Wednesday. He is definitely out for Saturday's match against United. I am guessing he got...

Women's World Cup Draw

Results of today's draw in Wuhan: (world ranking in parentheses) Not a good outcome for the USA with three of the top five teams in the world in the same group. Oddly, same first-round opponents for the USA as 2003, when they won all three games and outscored these teams...
