umm, yeah: some of those barra-brava lyrics aren't so lyrical in translation. all the same, let's go UNITED!! fingers crossed and eyes alternately closed and open, praying for a strong showing...

I for one am enormously proud of DC United. For us to go into Guadalajara and expect to compete against perhaps the most storied Mexican franchise is really quite remarkable.

No Fred. Simms seems to be playing wide right. We've been controlling the ball pretty well. Ref has been on our side so far.

I'm listening to Tony Limarzi right now online, and i'm looking forward to hear him on 1160 when the MLS season starts.

erpen is the worst defender in the history of dc united.
i wish stokes was back there
all and all.. 1 - 1 is solid.. 1 - 0 would be better.. but its a definite possiblity..
VAMOS UNITED

by the way, deroux came on for the injured gros.
and we look good!!
Posted by: jerad | April 3, 2007 10:26 PM | Report abuse
Disappointing we let the lead slip, but much better than the last leg so far from DC. And the refs have been impartial so far. Who would have thought that!
Posted by: Drunken Duncan | April 3, 2007 10:29 PM | Report abuse
It should be interesting to see (or read!) what adjustments the teams make at half-time. It sounds as though DC is playing well... maybe Soehn will talk his defenders into giving better coverage in the second half. Our midfield and attackers seem to be doing well
Posted by: TedR | April 3, 2007 10:31 PM | Report abuse
We controlled the mid-field in the first half but as usual, back line looking shakey. Erpen should be called the Heart Attack Kid.
Second half should see the arrival of Fred. Let's hope the altitude does not get to the Black and Red.
Posted by: DCU Fan | April 3, 2007 10:32 PM | Report abuse
I thought we were looking tired at the end of the half. Gomez has gone very quiet. Other than the goal Moreno has not seemed to do a whole lot.
Let's see if we can hit them on the counter. Fred's fresh legs may be good for that. de Roux was an interesting choice in the first half for Gros.
Posted by: Glenn | April 3, 2007 10:42 PM | Report abuse
I guess it's better than nothing, but the audio feed on dcunited.com is pretty poor.
Posted by: noptov52 | April 3, 2007 10:44 PM | Report abuse
Our defense is going to derail the season at the rate things are going.
Posted by: G-Dub | April 3, 2007 10:46 PM | Report abuse
NO!!! Perkins dropped a wet ball. Chivas 2 - DC 1.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 3, 2007 10:46 PM | Report abuse
Bloody Hell!
Posted by: Drunken Duncan | April 3, 2007 10:47 PM | Report abuse
Ball slips through Perkins hands and into the goal. Let's hope he can quickly recover from it.
Posted by: Kristina | April 3, 2007 10:47 PM | Report abuse
Has Emilio been playing? haven't heard his name mentioned... he should be in mid-season form though, right? should be an interesting 2nd half
Posted by: TedR | April 3, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse
We've looked beat this half, but c'mon perkins. You can't let that happen!
Posted by: Drunken Duncan | April 3, 2007 10:49 PM | Report abuse
man, I thought that was the equalizer! These refs are totally on our side.
Posted by: Glenn | April 3, 2007 10:50 PM | Report abuse
Emilio has been playing, he's been kinda silent since Jaime's goal. From what I'm hearing this doesn't sound good.
Posted by: Kristina | April 3, 2007 10:50 PM | Report abuse
Deroux looks good
Posted by: Drunken Duncan | April 3, 2007 10:51 PM | Report abuse
deroux's name has been called way too much for a sub... im surprised.. apparantly that cross in to gomez was nice
maybe just another great united player forming
Posted by: kenny | April 3, 2007 10:52 PM | Report abuse
They should have played fred from the begining. so far game is better than last time. we need fred, sooon.
Posted by: yo its me | April 3, 2007 10:52 PM | Report abuse
I disagree. Fred coming in as a second half sub can give DC some spark (hopefully). We NEED an equalizer.
Posted by: Kristina | April 3, 2007 10:54 PM | Report abuse
maybe Fred's arrival will spark Emilio... and Christian Gomez?!
Posted by: TedR | April 3, 2007 10:56 PM | Report abuse
who do you think should be subbed out for fred?
and moreno for walker? is that going to happen to add that speed up top?
Posted by: kenny | April 3, 2007 10:57 PM | Report abuse
Maybe Simms, I've heard Fred can play out wide too.
Posted by: Kristina | April 3, 2007 10:58 PM | Report abuse
Comcast sportsnet just showed the three goals. Moreno's bike kick was great, but Perkins' error sucked.
Posted by: Andy in Annap. | April 3, 2007 10:58 PM | Report abuse
i agree. fred comes in for simms. deroux seems to me making too much noise to sub him out.
Posted by: kenny | April 3, 2007 11:00 PM | Report abuse
guess i was wrong
Posted by: kenny | April 3, 2007 11:01 PM | Report abuse
Here comes Fred!
Posted by: Kyle | April 3, 2007 11:01 PM | Report abuse
whatever it takes to strengthen our midfield with strong passing and ball control. we need attackers with good finish, although Moreno probably won't last the half. could be Walker. a strong midfield and speed on the flanks and up front could put Chivas on their back heel and take pressure off our defenders...
Posted by: TedR | April 3, 2007 11:01 PM | Report abuse
Fred in for deRoux?
Posted by: Anonymous | April 3, 2007 11:01 PM | Report abuse
fred is officially in the game, now. 67th minute. he's playing centrally. I think the commentator said Deroux went out. Anyone know?
Posted by: andy in annap. | April 3, 2007 11:01 PM | Report abuse
deroux comes out for fred!?! That doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless deroux can't handle the altitude.
Posted by: Kristina | April 3, 2007 11:02 PM | Report abuse
From what I'm listening to on the audio feed, I don't understand why DeRoux was subbed out, he seemed to be creating chances.
Posted by: noptov52 | April 3, 2007 11:02 PM | Report abuse
Why Deroux for Fred, he had fresh legs!
makes no sense!
Posted by: Drunken Duncan | April 3, 2007 11:02 PM | Report abuse
Jaime creates a great chance, but Chivas blasts it out.
Posted by: Andy in Annap. | April 3, 2007 11:03 PM | Report abuse
Olsen moves out wide leaving Carroll the lone DM. Fred moves centrally.
Posted by: Kristina | April 3, 2007 11:03 PM | Report abuse
what happens if its a tie? Golden Goal? Penalties? or do away goals count? Come on DC!!!!!
Posted by: yo its me | April 3, 2007 11:06 PM | Report abuse
they go OT.. and then penalties if that doesnt work
and NO away goals do not count
Posted by: kenyn | April 3, 2007 11:07 PM | Report abuse
overtime and then if still tied PKs
Posted by: Kristina | April 3, 2007 11:07 PM | Report abuse
74th Minute. Chivas seems to be defending assuredly. Fred wins a free kick outside the box.

Posted by: DCUfrvr | April 3, 2007 11:16 PM | Report abuse
if Chivas is packing it in then we need to pressure their goal with outside shots, win some corner kicks and try to capitalize with our taller players in front of their goal (i'm assuming that an eagle can sky higher than a goat)
Posted by: TedR | April 3, 2007 11:16 PM | Report abuse
Perkins saves a Chivas chance... 84th minute.
Posted by: Andy in Annap. | April 3, 2007 11:18 PM | Report abuse
I agree TedR. Eagles should fly higher thans goats. But damn, their defenders are like sequoyahs.
Posted by: Andy in Annap. | April 3, 2007 11:20 PM | Report abuse
not much time left... it may come down to an outstanding DC individual effort for us to advance

thanks all. yeah, could have been better. DC should be improved as the MLS season gets going. for now... come on Houston!
Posted by: TedR | April 3, 2007 11:30 PM | Report abuse
You could see our defenders were dragging in the last minutes.
Troy is going to beat himself up on that second goal. Basic mistake. He was already thinking of were to release instead of securing the ball.
I think Goff called it correctly at the top of the blog! Hope Houston makes it through so we can have one MLS representative. (But put my money on the Goats to take the Championship)
Posted by: DCU Fan | April 3, 2007 11:36 PM | Report abuse
We played so much better then the first leg, how come this result hurts so much more?
Well, at least we looked like we belong out there and hopefully this erases the taste of that five nil pasting by Pumas. You gotta wonder how things would have turned out if Gross hadn't had to come out in the first half. Oh well, could ah, should ah, would ah....
Maybe next year they'll hold this tournament in the fall.

DC looked really good in the first half, then tired in the second half. Strange subs, positioning by Soehn. Why was Fred playing in the middle when the space was on the wings? Why take off Deroux when he looked fresher and quicker than Olsen and Simms? Watching Erpen is like watching the three seconds before a train wreck... for 90 minutes. Emilio is a huge pickup... but the lack of speed overall is worrying me. Better than the beating we took against Pumas.
Posted by: SpikeFC | April 4, 2007 12:04 AM | Report abuse
hey perkins and defense, you blow.
fred and emilio also weren't that impressive.
Posted by: dsnj | April 4, 2007 12:09 AM | Report abuse
We didn't look sharp for most of the game (not just Erpen) and the lack of attacking offensive flow was concerning. We needed a great game to beat Chivas and this wasn't it (the soft goals didn't help).
It was a tough situation to put Fred in, but the performance was not much. I hope he can get more settled somewhere once the season starts. Maybe it's just that he was playing in the middle and didn't seem to link up well with Gomez (who was often missing in action).
I may sound too negative, but we almost sneaked away with the win -- we didn't almost deservedly win.
Posted by: RB | April 4, 2007 12:11 AM | Report abuse
Watched the game on FSC @ Temperance Bar and boy was I surprised at how even we looked. Jamie's soft bicycle may be the prettiest goal we see all year from the red and black. On the first Chivas goal Erpen got smoked on the footie equivalent of a simple backdoor cut, but the real culprit was Boswell, who, as the Chivas player was coming at the goal along the touchline with no angle to do anything, took two steps toward him, leaving his own man unmarked at the 6. Simple pass, simple finish, bad defending. The second Chivas goal was rec-league keeping by Perkins. Long blast from way outside the box, saw it all the way, just didn't watch the ball into his hands -- lost focus. Painful, painful way to lose. It's too bad, 'cause Perkins made two outstanding saves from the ground and generally looked back on form.
DeRoux looked pretty good to me. Speedy, agressive. Simms looked like poo, awful awful crosses. Gomez was pretty invisible for the most part. Fred's 15 minutes were pretty unremarkable. Caroll had some bad moments and some really clumsy-looking tackles. Jamil Walker ran around a lot and accomplished nothing (I see him as the Eddie Johnson of DCU).
On the whole, it was pretty much a 50/50 game. We blew two very good chances, and had a ball off the post in a mad scramble at the very end. Take away the Perkins gaffe, and it could have easily been our night. But it's a game of inches... oh wait, that's baseball... If nothing else we've shown that the days of going in and getting pasted by Mexican clubs are probably a thing of the past.
