Another Local USL Club?

Silvino Gonzalo tells me that he has resigned as coach of the PDL Northern Virginia Royals after 10 seasons and next year will coach a tentatively approved USL second division club called Real Maryland FC, which will play home matches at Maryland SoccerPlex, University of Maryland or perhaps a high school in Montgomery County. The club's backers are based both locally and in Spain. He also said the club has been in talks with several Latin players and hopes to announce signings later this summer.

If this comes to fruition -- and Gonzalo says the club has received USL approval -- it will become the third USL2 entry in the area, joining Crystal Palace USA and the Richmond Kickers. There are also five PDL teams in Virginia: the Royals, Richmond Kickers Future, Virginia Legacy, Fredericksburg Gunners and Hampton Roads Piranhas.

Off topic, Crystal Palace earned a 1-1 tie at Richmond last night to clinch a berth in the U.S. Open Cup. They will play a first-round match June 12 against a PDL or amateur side. The draw is Tuesday.

I will be back tonight or tomorrow with some exclusive USSF news.....
