Esky Traded

Just got off the phone with Alecko Eskandarian, who confirmed that he has been traded by Toronto to Real Salt Lake -- just three days after scoring his first goal of the season. Here is the official press release announcing Esky and a pick to RSL for Jeff Cunningham.

"It's a huge shock. Totally out of the blue. They called me into the coaches' office this morning and told me. I am definitely disappointed. I felt good here and was really settling in. It hurts. I feel like I was deceived. I am sure they will put a spin on it and say that I wanted to leave, but that's not the case."

In a lighter moment, he added: "Usually when you score a goal they want to keep you. I guess not in this case."

I'm sorry that Esky can't catch a break. I blame Matt Reis.

Esky's words read almost verbatim from the article from a few days ago talking about his trade from DC.

I hope it does not affect him too much. He is a good player and a great personality for any club.

He is going to another basement team, albeit one without any atmosphere.

Didn't he just say that his furniture had just gotten to Toronto?

I will be cheering for Esky wherever he plays...

Posted by: Erick | May 22, 2007 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Sucks to be Esky.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2007 3:09 PM | Report abuse

man, this is really tough for him - battling back last year from all the concussion and leg injuries, then 2 unwanted trades within a couple months, both away from teams with great supporters. ouch

Posted by: pat | May 22, 2007 3:11 PM | Report abuse

So is "Esky's World" going to the RSL website?

Posted by: Kim | May 22, 2007 3:12 PM | Report abuse

What are they trying to do in Toronto? Tough break for Esky.

Posted by: m | May 22, 2007 3:15 PM | Report abuse

If anyone is equipped to deal with this, it's everyone's favorite bull Esky. There is a great fanbase in RSL just waiting for a likeable, hard-working player to come there and help them win some games. Best of luck Esky, keep plugging away and the rest will take care of itself.

so is TFC going after Radzinksi?

Posted by: pat | May 22, 2007 3:22 PM | Report abuse

I'll always be an Eskandarian fan, no matter who he's playing for. Sucks that such a great guy is getting treated (traded?) like this.

Did TFC always plan on trading him, or was a recent decision due to his limited scoring so far this season? Or was it something else? I'll be interested to here more details as the story develops.

Posted by: DCBird | May 22, 2007 3:25 PM | Report abuse

maybe they don't like headbands in toronto?

Posted by: RLB | May 22, 2007 3:29 PM | Report abuse

How does one adjust from living on M street in Georgetown, to Toronto, and then totally downshifting to Salt Lake City?

If anyone's roadtripping to SLC, repay Esky for the beer donation he provided last year.

Posted by: Kim | May 22, 2007 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Toronto has to be close to signing Tomasz Radzinski. He and Esky are somewhat similar-style players, and Johnston is obviously going for Canadians and English league vets. Radzinski fits both bills.

Esky has had some really tough luck this year. At least now he doesn't get hammered by Canadian taxes. Plus, at RSL he's in an atmosphere where they need help. He could be huge there. He also gets tutelage from Kreis, who had some similar attributes as a striker (hard shot, smallish, ultra-competitive).

Does this then open the door for the Cunningham-LA deal? I'm not sure I see Esky and Cunningham pairing up that well, though if they could make it work it would be pretty dangerous. Is LA actually going to lose something on the deal, or will they go so far over the cap that it becomes a farce (if they aren't already there with Xavier)?

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | May 22, 2007 3:30 PM | Report abuse

pat: RSL has a pair of pretty good supporters clubs, neither is up to DC or TFC standards, but at least they're there.

Kim: I sure hope so!

Posted by: Pat Eyler | May 22, 2007 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, but the supporters clubs can't even:
A) cuss
B) consume alcoholic beverages

Posted by: Max | May 22, 2007 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, but give them a package of sidewalk chalk, and look out!

Posted by: Kim | May 22, 2007 3:39 PM | Report abuse

trade 8 more old DC United players to RSL and we've got our own farm system going!

Posted by: grotus | May 22, 2007 3:45 PM | Report abuse

Man that sucks for Eski. Hopefully he will come out on top and tear up some West Coast defenses.

Posted by: Kinney | May 22, 2007 3:47 PM | Report abuse

Max - You, sir, are an idiot. Rely on false stereotypes much? Tell Pablo Mastroeni that the RSL fans are all sober and polite...

Posted by: Ryan | May 22, 2007 3:49 PM | Report abuse

So, RSL now looks like:

Keeper: Rimando
Defender: Pope
Midfield: Adu
Striker: Esky

A few more players and they'll have a DC United team.

Posted by: TCompton | May 22, 2007 3:50 PM | Report abuse

I'd love to see him help turn RSL around.

And I look forward to hearing him introduced at RFK -- I bet he gets the best welcome ever for an opposing player.

Posted by: sow | May 22, 2007 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Oh no! Poor guy! Have they given any clue as to why?

Posted by: Needsahug | May 22, 2007 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Don't forget Carey Talley and Brian Kamler on the United cast-off ranch.

Posted by: Kim | May 22, 2007 4:01 PM | Report abuse

who was he traded for?

where's the love for Carey Talley?

Posted by: Talley, Too | May 22, 2007 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Man, I feel horrible for this guy. When they come to RFK we need to like take him out for drinks afterward or something. I say we send Moreno to RSL for Esky. Then Kreis will actually have to coach the guy that breaks his record... (obviously not a serious suggestion, although I would send several of our players to have Esky back)

Posted by: Duke Cuneo | May 22, 2007 4:07 PM | Report abuse

Is this a sign Toronto's bringing in Tomasz Radzinski?

Have you heard anything linking TFC and Radz?

Posted by: Drew-Rochester | May 22, 2007 4:18 PM | Report abuse

My guess Cunningham is headed to Toronto in exchange for Esky and $100K allocation

Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2007 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Any scoop on the Cunningham trade to LA?

Posted by: fcmuenchweiler | May 22, 2007 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Interesting. Didn't you just tell us that he bought an apartment? Tough, this life of an athlete...

I guess Kreiss wants to put his stamp on the team. Maybe he was pissed that Cunningham never passed him the ball!

Posted by: jj | May 22, 2007 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Esky & 2008 1st rounder for Cunningham

Posted by: TFC Fan | May 22, 2007 4:43 PM | Report abuse

According to the press in Salt Lake it's pretty much a straight swap. Esky and TFC's 1st pick in next year's draft for Cunningham.

Posted by: Glenn | May 22, 2007 4:44 PM | Report abuse

Well, Esky might start smiling once Winter settles in Toronto...

Posted by: Silver Lining | May 22, 2007 4:46 PM | Report abuse

Wow. That is rough.

Nothing against Salt Lake, but it's not near the city that Toronto is (unless you ski).

Posted by: KR in DC | May 22, 2007 5:07 PM | Report abuse

Apparently the SL Trib has hired a three year old to write their RSL news.

Posted by: Logan Circle | May 22, 2007 5:15 PM | Report abuse

This just paves the way for DC to trade for Esky in the offseason for Stephen deRoux when Jesus Kreis decides the team needs more flank speed. Roy Lassiter Part Deux

Posted by: Henchlow | May 22, 2007 5:48 PM | Report abuse

Man, that's rough. Esky brings such a competitively catalytic personality wherever he goes, and it's hard to watch this guy be gobbled up likes the balls in Hungry Hungry Hippo. As usual, best to him wherever he ends up (save when he plays DC).

Posted by: RJ | May 22, 2007 5:55 PM | Report abuse

I like Esky but in exchange for Cunningham and a draft pick? Sorry but this looks like a crap move by SLC.

I hope Toronto has a great season so SLC ends up with the lower draft pick. We already know they will be getting the 1st pick overall.

Prior to picking up Xavier last week, L.A. had the highest salary CAP hit--in addition to the highest actual salary payout--in the league. I figured they added Xavier with the understanding they would drop someone, the same way Red Bulls added Angel and then dropped Wynne.

If Galaxy are really trading cap space to add Cunningham, MLS may as well throw every rule about the salary cap out the window, because Galaxy are pushing close to being $350,000 over the cap.

Posted by: Grasskisser | May 22, 2007 6:39 PM | Report abuse

"because Galaxy are pushing close to being $350,000 over the cap."

The salary cap has never applied and will never apply to LA or NY. Pick your quote from the 41st president George H.W. Bush:
A. It's fuzzy math
B. It's voodoo economics

So this evening Toronto's press release said that they had acquired Cunningham AND a first-round pick for Esky. That was wrong. Ugh. RSL gets Esky and a pick for Cunningham. The RSL release was accurate.

Posted by: Goff | May 22, 2007 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Poor Eskandarian. He's a heck of a guy. Hope he likes to ski. Or hike. Salt Lake is kind of a weird place but its really really beautiful.

Posted by: Crewgrrl | May 22, 2007 11:42 PM | Report abuse

Too bad for Esky. The way Mo goes through his roster, he's like a combination of Charlie Finley and Bill Veeck on crack.

Posted by: griffin1108 | May 23, 2007 12:10 AM | Report abuse

"Sorry but this looks like a crap move by SLC."

Shock of shocks. Who woulda thunk, RSL and Toronto involved in silly, unnecessary roster moves?

Posted by: Joe S. | May 23, 2007 2:36 AM | Report abuse

Its very doubtful Esky would end up back at DCU... and, like it or not, he has not been the same player since his concussion. I do hope he makes an impact at RSL and then gets traded to a better team.

Posted by: Ron | May 23, 2007 6:02 AM | Report abuse

Esky hasn't been the same since he took a sip of Red Bull as part of his goal celebration.

Posted by: Mark | May 23, 2007 8:02 AM | Report abuse

Isn't he the one that was complaining about moving to Toronto? Maybe he'll learn his lesson not to complain about where he's being traded lest folks think he doesn't really want to be there.

Anyway, so the guy gets to live in DC, Toronto, and Salt Lake City while getting paid to play soccer. It's not like he has kids that are following him around. Tough life.

Posted by: Hacksaw | May 23, 2007 2:00 PM | Report abuse

If Walker's out, let's get Esky back!

Posted by: Dave | May 23, 2007 3:59 PM | Report abuse

ok, only half of the RSL fans are sobber at the games, just because rice dickels stadium dont sell beer , they dont kick you out for drinking in the lot so most of us are three sheets to the wind when the game starts.
oh and at least RSL has a AVG. of 12,000 fans at every home game. teams in the legaue with their own stadium dont even have that !!

p.s. we are sidewalk chalk happy though i give you that

Posted by: Anonymous | May 24, 2007 11:06 PM | Report abuse

Hey guys,

There's a lot of TFC fans up here that are really shocked and disappointed to see Esky go. I was bout to get an Esky TFC jersey.

He only played a few games, but you could tell the passion at which he plays the game, RSL is going to enjoy him. Hopefully Cunningham can put some goals in for us.
