Matchday 6: DCU at TFC

Greetings from Toronto.....

Gorgeous day on Lake Ontario, sellout crowd expected.

Got a chance to watch the FA Cup final in the hotel lounge this morning. Nice combination between Lampard and Drogba to win it. Bizarre no-goal situation earlier when Giggs slid into Cech. Feel free to share your thoughts here. We'll put up the video in the next day or two, if possible.

DCU STARTERS, as expected: Perkins; Namoff, Boswell, Erpen, Gros; Fred, Carroll, Gomez, Olsen; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Burch, Casal, Moose, Simms, Kpene, deRoux, Nolly. FYI, Burch is the reserve defender.

Esky is starting for Toronto.

The reserve match will take place immediately following the league game. Dyachenko was not allowed into Canada because of continuing immigration issues.

As usual, I welcome your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts in the comments section below. I will then create a new thread this evening for player ratings and bonus quotes.

Any good eating places near the stadium?

It looks like Radzinski's available now... I wonder if Toronto will try to bring him in. I'd think he's about as high profile as Canadian players come.

Wilson is now behind Burch? Geez.

where's adderly? he looked ok in his one start, i'm surprised he's not even on the bench. especially that we have only one forward on the bench.

Team loves Burch.

Look at Esky mix it up with Namoff. I bet he's charged up.

Where was this Esky last year? He's gotten feisty.

We are not a very good team right now.

i thought that goal was offside but the replay shows gros was back too far and kept everyone on.

DC Scores off of a Gomez free kick. Hit off of Goldwaithe's head for an own goal. Erpen almost gets ejected.

Correction: MLSnet.com's match tracker credits Andrew Boyens for the own goal. Erpen out, Kpene in.

Matchtracker can't get who scored the goal for DC right...changed it to Goldwaithe

Just put it in the net! This is agony...

DC dominating the second half, but squandering great chances, in particular Gomez and Olsen. Kpene has injected life into the attack as well, good sub for Erpen. However, I also think the D looks a little shaky on counterattacks and could be exploited if we don't finish off one of these chances.

Totally not finishing. Great PK call. PUT IT IN!!!!!

Posted by: T. Henry | May 19, 2007 5:23 PM | Report abuse

Gooooooooooolllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jaime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Posted by: T. Henry | May 19, 2007 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Woohoo, Moreno money from the spot.

Posted by: G-Dub | May 19, 2007 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Simms on for Gomez. Smart move by Soehn, take out an attacking player after we go up with 10 left for a more defensive minded player. Gomez was also playing horribly.

Great game Jaime!

Very physical game. Great battle. Unfortunate that we are still having trouble finishing our chances. Great second half possession was good. Good teams are going to give up a goal, but they should score two or three. They are taking baby steps. Maybe we just don't want to peak to soon? Anyway, I like this Kpene kid and I think he will only improve. A win is a win and I'll take it. Also, what a great place for soccer. That stadium is awesome. Makes me want to plan a trip to Toronto. Vamos United!

Final whistle...Emilio almost had one at the end, but cracked it off the far post.
DC 2 - TFC 1

First come from behind win.

Absolutely Pul-satin' match, a real cracker! Terrific atmosphere, and props to the DC Faithful that made the trip!

I thought Namoff really stood out today, both defending and moving forward. Erpen and Boswell were strong as well, except for the ball watching on the goal. Erpen gets his required bike kick.

Kpene really added to the attack. Emilio seems to be scuffling a bit. Gomez still too many turnovers. Carroll looked like he's back to normal. Perkins looked confident.

I thought Jaime wasn't doing the business enough, but then he converts a great (and deserved) PK.

Ref did a good job, IMHO. Spirited match.

Finally props to Dave Johnson on CSN. Best PbP guy working for a team in MLS.

What a massively different game from the 1st half to 2nd half.

Carroll was strong throughout. Moreno had a real captain's second half, tracking back often to help us pull this one out. Great stuff from Jaime after he struggled in the 1st half. Fred and Kpene were also really good. Kpene could be the steal of the draft. Other than the ball-watching on the goal, I thought we defended fairly well. I will say that Gomez, aside from the freekick that gave us the equalizer, really didn't look very good. Hopefully it was just an off game.

Tough win, but I think every team in the league would take ground-out, one goal wins at BMO Field. Toronto will be there or thereabouts on the strength of their home play (a la Colorado), but their lack of depth may still end up costing them. It's telling that, losing at home with a spare sub, and pressing for the last 5 minutes, there was no one on the bench Johnston thought could make a difference.

Jaime's Erp-fu effort just before he was taken out was priceless. Old my ass!

Gros the new Erpin?
I thought Erpin looked good today; he even got to include his trademark Upside down bicycle kick.

Posted by: Garret | May 19, 2007 6:40 PM | Report abuse

How can we keep Kpene off the field? Put him and Emilio up top and slide Moreno back to mid just as he did in the second half. DC played easily its best soccer in the second half with Gomez and Moreno running the show from midfield. Almost unfair with Fred, Gomez, Moreno and Emilio playing up top. So glad we won. :-)
