Saturday in the Park

Some thoughts.....

-- Dallas was on the brink of acquiring Amado Guevara late Friday afternoon when the deal hit a snag. The specific reason was not clear, but apparently had nothing to do with what Dallas was going to send Chivas USA. Talks could re-start this week. Do the Frisco lads really need him, his salary and his baggage? Just wondering...

-- Remember six weeks ago when New England was the trendy pick to be the league's biggest disappointment this year? There were injury concerns, contract squabbles and the captain took a leave of absence. After three trips to MLS Cup the past five years, the Revs were done, right? Um, wrong. Since an opening loss at Chicago, Steve Nicol has guided them to the top of the East with a six-game unbeaten streak, capped by Saturday's 3-2 win at Los Angeles. Taylor Twellman (6 goals) is your MVP front-runner. In his sixth season, the former Terp has 81 goals in just 137 matches and is only 27 goals behind all-time leader Jason Kreis (108 in 305 appearances). Great game highlights, check 'em out.

-- Chicago and Toronto did a lot of talking during the week and then they tussled on the pitch. Not a pretty sight in the goal area late in the first half. At the end of the day, though, Toronto capitalized on its opportunities for a long-sought first victory (and its first goals ever). The team needed it, its passionate fan base needed it. (Can't wait to head north this coming weekend for DCU's visit.)

-- As for attendance, we're going to give Kansas City a break this week after savaging them last week. They managed to draw more than 10,000 (barely) against Dallas, so they're off the hook ... for now. Meantime, Sunday afternoon at Giants Stadium, 68 degrees and clear, an announced crowd of 7,802 show up for an undefeated Red Bulls team. Are you kidding me??? Well, there are only 17,800,000 people in the NY metro area. Sigh...

Feel free to share your weekend observations below.....
