Chicago Bound

I am on my way to Chicago for the Gold Cup semifinals and will have plenty of news and USA pregame talking points upon arrival.

Meantime, talk among yourselves on any topic.

Soooo, who starts for the Americans tonight?

"Soooo, who starts for the Americans tonight?"

Ralston Felihaber Bradley Mapp
Twellman Johnson

Steve,

Great job as always! Any word on the Galaxy-RSL trade? Apparently Klein is going to LA for Sturgis and Findley. I have been a Galaxy supporter since day one, but I have to tell you, I can't stomach this team anymore. Every night I go to bed wishing that LA was run more like DC United. They have been head and shoulders above anyone else since the inception of the league. I have no problems telling anyone that DC is my favorite team, but I got stuck with the Galaxy. Oh well...c'est la vie!

Ives is convinced that Bradley will put Twellman up top. Does that make anyone else nervous?

Posted by: DCBird | June 21, 2007 9:31 AM | Report abuse

Hey Bizarro

Please tell me you are joking about starting Brad "no international experience" Guzan at GK tonight over Keller and Howard. That is the best laugh I've had all day.

Steve, how about some love for the Xeneizes? Campeones!

Goff,

Thanks for the constant stream of footie news! Sorry to keep this MLS related, but I have been following Lalas' career since his youth leagues. I coached him and had the pleasure of showing him the ropes back in Michigan at FC Nambla. Any word on whether he has been reprimanded for his comments? Though I agree with a lot of what he says, he seems to be suffering from foot-in-mouth disease on occasion.

Twellman should follow Kreis and retire and coach the Galaxy (next worst team from RSL). I'm starting to wonder if he can score from the penalty spot... as good a silver platter as anyone could ask for... the goal against the US in the Panama game was Ralston's fault (another Rev)... he plowed into the 2 US defenders and took them out of the play... he should watch from the stands...

Posted by: SoyManya! | June 21, 2007 9:43 AM | Report abuse

Twellman up top, I hope not. He has proven he is a fine MLS finisher but can't seem to extend this fine play to international competition. He has had numerous opportunities to get the job done and continues to struggle. Unfortunately, I do not see other clearly better options. Ching, Johnson, Rolfe all appear to have limitations as well. It is a tough decision and explains why Dempsey is seeing more and more playing time up top.

I just got tix for the final -- hoping US wins tonight! Any suggestions on good steak places in Chicago? Anyone know if there are any festivities planned by the incompetents at CONCACAF for the final?

Hacksaw, the best steakhouse in Chicago is Morton's. Go to the originial one, and order the Filet. It is absolutely the best steak in the world. Must wash it down with an ice cold Newcastle though.

Why no mention of the Libertadores...It is one of the best tournaments in the world and displays great soccer. I am waiting for the day DC United is in the tournament...

"I coached him and had the pleasure of showing him the ropes back in Michigan at FC Nambla."

Nambla has a football team? What is the age classification?

Posted by: Anonymous | June 21, 2007 10:26 AM | Report abuse

Lalas played for a team called FC Nambla - that's almost too good too be true. Both hilarious and would explain a lot.

What's the status with EJ, is he still carrying the knock he received during the group stages?

Posted by: G-Dub | June 21, 2007 10:28 AM | Report abuse

I hope to Gosh that FC Nambla does not have a youth team.

Posted by: fckalihi | June 21, 2007 10:33 AM | Report abuse

For anon who was wondering about FC Nambla, Michael Mejido is a well known BigSoccer poster and Metrostars fan. If you have ever seen his old site comparing all of the 96' United players and coaches to the Nazi heirarcy you know that you can never take anything he says seriously, ever. Interestingly, many of those players and coaches are now with his team.

It's an odd feeling, but I'm more excited to watch Guadalupe upset Mexico than I am to watch the US roll over Canada.

Posted by: David | June 21, 2007 10:38 AM | Report abuse

I think people are having a wee bit of fun on this one...

Topper and Meijido are BigSoccer posters, but I REALLY doubt either of them actually posted these entries...

BTW, I am having a fabulous party after the Gold Cup final, but it's 100K to attend...

Well, David, if that is your real name, you better hope your enjoyment isn't spoiled by the reverse in results as you posted above. It would be so terrible to see Donovan upset. Gee, that would be so terrible.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 21, 2007 10:49 AM | Report abuse

I'm betting that Mejido's site is NSFW.

Are Toronto and LA having a contest to see who can trade the most players this year?

"I coached him and had the pleasure of showing him the ropes back in Michigan at FC Nambla"

I don't even want to know what "showing him the ropes" is.

Posted by: Luis | June 21, 2007 10:51 AM | Report abuse

I'd like to see this:

Howard
Spector-Onyewu-Parkhurst-Bocanegra
Dempsey-Mastreoni-Bradley-Mapp
Donovan-Twellman

I'm guessing we'll see this:

Howard
Hejduk-Onyewu-Bocanegra-Bornstein
Donovan-Mastreoni-Bradley-Beasley
Dempsey-Johnson

Posted by: Jeff M | June 21, 2007 10:54 AM | Report abuse

i am hoping to see feilhaber, spector, and simek but am positive that bob is going to play michael bradley, bornstein, and hedjuk.

Posted by: pat | June 21, 2007 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Let's hope that Feilhaber starts in central midfield over either of the current favored pair (Mastroeni or Bradley)- need a little more creativity in the middle - that combo reminds me of the 1998 WC pairing of Deering & Maissoneuve.

Assuming that either one of them is fully fit, Ching or Johnson over Twellman.

Posted by: Eric Z | June 21, 2007 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Not that I would necessarily choose this as my starting lineup, but I'm guessing...

Howard
Spector, Parkhurst, Bocanegra, Borrrrrrrrrrrrrnstein
Donovan, Feilhaber, Mastroeni, Beasley
Dempsey, Ching

Is Gooch eligible? He picked up another yellow in the last game. Here's his line.

Guat-Red
T&T-Suspended
ElSal-Yellow
--
Pan-Yellow

Did the yellow suspension reset? God I hope not. Gooch makes today's Eddie Pope look World Class.

Thx,

Jay!

Who's going to Copa?

Posted by: London Dan | June 21, 2007 11:28 AM | Report abuse

i'm surprised at the number of people who have parkhurst in their lineups. i thought demerit looked much better in the game they played together.

Posted by: pat | June 21, 2007 11:28 AM | Report abuse

I don't think Hejduk and M. Bradley will be starting this game. Coach seems to be rotating at the right wide defense and holding midfield positions, so I think those two will be out in favor of Spector (or Simek) and Feilhaber this time around. But Bornstein stays for whatever reason.

I'm torn between Parkhurst and Demerit, but one of them will be starting in place of Gooch.

Posted by: Shatz | June 21, 2007 11:36 AM | Report abuse

I am resigned to seeing Twellman and Bornstein but obviously wish that were not the case.

"Guat-Red

Blimey - that looks like the rap sheet that The Gooch from Diff'rent Strokes fame would put together. What a bully!

I think Gooch keeps his spot and I think US will turn Canada into back-bacon.

"Ives is convinced that Bradley will put Twellman up top. Does that make anyone else nervous?"

Not me. I think he belongs up there. But you could make a case for a lot of guys up top right now, which is a nice problem to have.

I know I'd rather see Dempsey back out on the wing instead of Ralston.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 21, 2007 1:02 PM | Report abuse

USA 2
Nice, Flappy-heads 0

Mexico 1
Guadeloupe 0 (After Extra Time)

Posted by: Kev | June 21, 2007 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Bradley has two problems picking the side for this game. First, we do not have very dependable forwards. Deuce and Landy, maybe, but Dempsey prefers the wing, and Donovan seems most effective from a midfield or withdrawn position. Ching can do the job, but not for an entire 90 minutes.

Second, several players are carrying yellow cards into the game. Bradley has to pick a squad that will get his team to the finals, realizing that he may lose one or two players for the final.

For JayRockers!, the suspension does reset the yellow card count, according to the FIFA rules for tournaments. Gooch has to earn one more in the Gold Cup to be suspended again. (The yellow card count apparently resets at the end of the tournament, also.)

Steve, not sure if you've hit up Chicago before, but check out Giordanos for some great pizza. Oh, and they're shooting Batman 2 over on Upper Wacker Drive, over near the Hyatt. I just moved back from Chitown and miss it already.

Oh, and Mex 2, Gua 0
US 3-, Can 1

Twellman is perfect for this game if we all agree he can light up MLS, even if not internationals. This is Canada. Isn't Canada basically a really good MLS team?

keller
spector-onyewu-bocanegra-bornstein
mapp-feilhaber-mastroeni-beasley
donovan-dempsey

when there's good wingers, why don't we use them, mapp's service is some of the best the US team has to offer.

Posted by: w | June 21, 2007 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Just FYI, Canada's got 30 million, not 300.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 21, 2007 2:43 PM | Report abuse

"Just FYI, Canada's got 30 million, not 300."

Could the intent have been to refer to the USA, which does have about 300 million inhabitants? Perhaps the original poster (Duke) would like to clarify.

Posted by: Go Penn State! | June 21, 2007 3:44 PM | Report abuse

The 300 million didn't refer to Guadeloupe?

Posted by: Anonymous | June 21, 2007 5:25 PM | Report abuse

Clearly, I meant the USA. The man jinxed us with the pseudo-prediction.
