DCU Move (or Moves?)

You never know what you are going to hear while sitting on the floor at Midway awaiting to board a Southwest flight back to Dulles.....

It seems defender John Wilson, who has been unavailable much of the season with injuries, is on his way out. Whether he gets traded or is waived has not been determined.

What does it mean?

Well, United could sign Dominic Mediate, who has been training with the club and playing in reserve matches. Or the club could be positioning itself to make a significant signing during the international window. Perhaps we'll learn more later today.

Time to board.....

This season is beginning to remind me of 2003 with all the dead weight on the roster. We know what Mediate brings to the club. We know Wilson is a PK machine. Cut bait and bring in Mediate or a defender, I say!

Thx,

Jay!

Wilson even gave a pk to Richmond the other day. I never thought I would have to relive that Salt Lake nightmare in person! Oh...the agony...

Has wilson played a minute with the first team since the rsl debacle last year?

Posted by: just a question | June 25, 2007 9:26 AM | Report abuse

No. Wilson's a great guy but I wouldn't be surprised if his MLS days are done. Will Chang alluded to a bunch of us at the tailgate last week that the club could possibly be looking to make a significant move in the summer window. He dropped alot of big names, the next couple weeks could be interesting.

Does anyone know what Wilsons salary was this season?

Posted by: ... | June 25, 2007 9:50 AM | Report abuse

Its time for the Front Office to upgrade our defense with a big name, big time performer, who can finally bring us some stability since Nelsen left us.

Wilson is a great guy so I hope he lands somewhere decent (maybe head back to Charleston?)

I think he was making about 35K?

Posted by: RIP General | June 25, 2007 10:02 AM | Report abuse

The writing has been on the wall for Wilson (fairly or unfairly, since I think the second penalty was bogus) since last year's game at RSL. His injuries have not helped, even though we went to a back four (thus giving him the chance to play his natural position, left back). He seems like a good guy, but things just haven't worked out.

I would think that the club is pursuing a good center back. Not only does the position need improvement/depth right away, we could also lose out on Boswell in the offseason. Mediate would be nice, but the club needs a center back yesterday.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | June 25, 2007 10:20 AM | Report abuse

We desperately need another defender for depth. McTavish will fill in nicely while Bobby is away, but what happens when one of Namoff/Erpen/McTavish/Gros gets injured or redcarded? We've been beating up on a lot of clubs recently (Chicago, NY, LA) who were depleted due to injuries, suspensions, and call ups. I'm worried that the same will happen to us if we don't address our needs now. Not that it will be easy to get another defender on board to fill in during Copa America, but we need to be looking hard.

International signing news?

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Posted by: DCAustinite | June 25, 2007 10:53 AM | Report abuse

We need a defender, especially a center back, who has some speed and can quickly cover ground back there. In the RSL game, Findley showed what a very average speedy striker can do to us.

I watched a USL match between the Charleston Battery and the Atlanta Silverbacks the other night and was surprised to see Steven Armstrong on the Charleston side. He did play for DCU at one point, right? Whatever happened to him? Did we trade/waive him or did he go elsewhere on his on?

Posted by: SoyManya! | June 25, 2007 10:59 AM | Report abuse

He may be a great guy, but on the field he left a lot to be desired. His release/trade should have come after the road match at RSL last year, not after the road match this year.

Umm, for the commenter who said that Will Chang was dropping some big names in terms of potential signings ... care to share some of those names with the rest of us?

Posted by: J | June 25, 2007 11:06 AM | Report abuse

SoyManya!-

I know we sent him to Kansas City in a trade. What I can't recall is whether it was part of the deal to bring Prideaux here, or if it was just for a draft pick. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards draft pick.

I thought the Mediate joke was funny at first, but now I'm starting to think that they're actually serious about wasting a roster spot on him. To bring in another needless forward when our defense is so thin would be absolutely criminal. With Wilson gone, our depth would be an inexperienced converted forward who has never started with the first team, with a less than comfortable Gros as our starting left back.

It is inconceivable that they would would waste a roster spot on Mediate. He may be a great guy, and play well on the practice squad, but at his age is he going to leap-frog over Moreno and Emilio and young Kpene and young Addlery or even old hat-trick-scoring Ben Olsen to become a starting forward? If Walker was on the bubble before getting hurt, why put another guy in the exact same position when the July 1 cutoff would guarantee his salary and waste a roster spot?

I'd like to see us find a way to bring 2 defenders in. A truly dominate sweeper, and a speedy outside back. How about Ilsinho at RB/RWB? He started out at Palmeiros and was quickly moved to SPFC, and earned his first cap with the national team in March against Ghana.

IIRC, Mediate has been playing as a "guest" outside defender during the reserve matches, not as a forward.

I want Heath Pearce. Isn't he out of contract? He'd be perfect for us. An American, and a good one at that, who plays in a position of need. I beleive he made around 70-80k last year. We could give him a nice raise to come home and still not use our DP spot on him.

What about Eddie Lewis, that might be a good signing. Save him from the sinking ship that is Leeds. He'd bring in a lot of experience and could play the left back position and really serve in some beautiful crosses.

Hopefully DCU front office is many steps and thoughts ahead of all of us...

I'm actually comfortable with Boswell, Erpen (yes, Erpen), and McTavish as centre-back options. If we want a big name defender, I'd rather get an outside back, and figure out a way to put Gros back in the midfield (which will be tough with Olsen and Fred playing so well)

Posted by: Joe | June 25, 2007 1:24 PM | Report abuse

heath pearce is a great idea. he's also better, younger and probably cheaper than eddie lewis.

Posted by: pat | June 25, 2007 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Armstrong went to KC for Prideaux.

One of the better deals in United history.

Posted by: Kim | June 25, 2007 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Kim, Chest Rockwell

Was Steve Armstrong the guy that held out after being drafted and then came onboard after he couldn't get any better offers elsewhere?

PS... I know this is off topic, but the "we need some defensive depth" topic is so obvious... haven't we been discussing it since...???

;-)

RE: Armstrong - he always baffled me - Kevin Payne put in a lot of effort to get this kid to come back to the US from playing overseas, we sign him, then before too long trade him to KC - he played a little while for them, then dropped to USL.

I think what we'd need with a big-name defender would be an outside back with some speed - for MLS it's a bit silly to spend major $$ on central defenders, colleges crank out pretty good ones (generation adidas does not, but that's a different issue) for cheap.

Dom Mediate seems like a nice guy, but other than reserve game help, what does he give us that we don;t already have?

Posted by: Lonnie | June 25, 2007 1:55 PM | Report abuse

wow!
he's already been removed from the roster page.

why can't we sign another DEFENDER???

Posted by: de | June 25, 2007 2:09 PM | Report abuse

To be fair to Armstrong, he was here during the Hudson years.

Yeah, he tried to go overseas (actually, he's from South Africa, so technically, it would be going back overseas), and returned to MLS when nothing materialized not unlike many MLS players.

He was a decent player, but that just could be memories tarnished by horrible teams. I always thought the trade wasn't one where Payne tried to steal a player (Roy for Roy), but traded quality to get quality.

i think a solid attacker can have more of an impact in this league than a solid defender, see juan pablo angel.

Posted by: pat | June 25, 2007 2:54 PM | Report abuse

There's more than just goal scoring when building a team...

Posted by: RK | June 25, 2007 4:15 PM | Report abuse

We have 3 senior internationals heading up our attack, so I think the Angel comparison isn't exactly correct. I'm with RK.

What a wonderful world! An owner who hangs with the gang, drinking cheap beer and hotdogs, sharing the inside skinny with the faithful. I love Abe Pollin, but even he wouldn't do that!
