DCU News You Can Use

Quick update from Estadio RFK, site of the SuperLiga match between United and Morelia tomorrow night.....

*The Hamstring Boys -- Jaime Moreno, Guy-Roland Kpene and Bryan Namoff -- will not play tomorrow, although Namoff did return to training routines with his mates. "I've finally turned the corner," he said. "Now it's a matter of getting back the fitness and touch on the ball." A return Sunday vs. Club America seems doubtful, but next week is possible.

*No word on Veron from this end. Despite the reports in the Argentine media and direct quotes from Veron about DCU's interest, United officials continue to deny they have even approached the midfield superstar. (sigh)

*John Maessner, head of youth development, arrived at practice carrying the trophy from United's U-17 Cup championship in Denver last week. Full details here.

Maybe more later. Maybe not. Peace.

one of the things that has popped up in the comments section lately is links to articles claiming Fred is on his way back to Australia. Seems pretty out-of-line with your article on how he was happy here a few weeks ago, but can you find out of there's any truth or not to the rumors?

Posted by: pat | July 24, 2007 12:30 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the updates, Goff.

How sad is it that the U-17 trophy is cooler than the MLS championship trophy?

Posted by: Sam | July 24, 2007 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Steve, how bad is Jaime? Is this a couple of weeks thing or longer than that?

Posted by: Chico | July 24, 2007 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Ahhh man, i do not see good things coming from this match up with Morelia.....

Posted by: Bolivian DC Fan | July 24, 2007 12:53 PM | Report abuse

How old is Johnny Maessner? Can he still play?

Posted by: Mifflin | July 24, 2007 1:03 PM | Report abuse

Hey Pat,

Didnt see the link to the article about Fred going back to AUS. If it was in the comments section, which post was commenting on.

Do you have the direct link?

Thanks.

According to DCU, the Fred rumor (going back to Australia) is completely untrue.

Moreno might be able to play Sunday, but too early to say.

Hey pat - I had found a blurb a couple of days ago about Fred going to the Queensland Roar on a loan deal with DCU. The Roar (ridiculous name!) have dismissed the rumor...but haven't we seen General Managers dismiss rumors before? Kevin Payne, I'm looking in your direction!

(this is from FourFourTwo):

"EXCLUSIVE - QUEENSLAND Roar have dismissed as 'nonsense' reports linking the club with former Melbourne Victory favourite Fred.

Fred, full name Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva, was a huge success in Ernie Merrick's all-conquering A-League outfit last season.

His skills helped Melbourne end the campaign as both Premiers and Champions.

But the player's success brought temptation and the 27-year-old, voted import of the year by FourFourTwo readers, was lured away from Victory to Major League Soccer club DC United in America.

Victory could not compete financially with the package on the table and Fred was gone. He made his debut for DC United in early April in the CONCACAF Champions Cup but struggled to find form in the States.

However, there has been recent speculation that the man who helped destroy Adelaide United in last year's grand final could be headed back Down Under with a possible move to Suncorp Stadium.

But a club spokesman had a one word response when quizzed on the matter today by au.fourfourtwo.com: "Nonsense."

Roar would have to make room on its import roster and no-one appears to be heading for the Suncorp exit.

However, Frank Farina's squad is not yet complete ahead of the new season with further additions not ruled out ahead of the big kick off."

No Moreno? Nuts.

451 again...at least this time, we will have Olsen in there. Any chance we could see him and Simms/Carroll in the middle, with Fred on the right and Gros on the left? Burch looked much better Sunday than he did against Harrisburg.

au.fourfourtwo.com refutes the Fred rumors as well.

Goff: Any preliminary numbers out re: early ticket sales for the SuperLiga games? They appear to be a little bit more expensive than regular MLS games.

Posted by: Juan-John | July 24, 2007 2:13 PM | Report abuse

I hear tickets for both games are slow. Real slooooooow.

Posted by: Chico | July 24, 2007 2:20 PM | Report abuse

I have season tickets. Good seats, and I want to go to the SuperLiga game. Don't i get a discount for having season tickets and get the tickets in my seat?

Posted by: Garret | July 24, 2007 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Tomorrows game should be in your season ticket package.

I think Garret owes you a beer, Chico. :D

The cheap seats ($25) are sold out for the Club America match (boo hoo)

Posted by: Bill in Md | July 24, 2007 3:39 PM | Report abuse

just buy season tickets guys!! They are really cheap!

Posted by: bobF | July 24, 2007 4:00 PM | Report abuse

If you half Plan A then you have tickets to the Morelia game and Plan B is Club America. If you have a Full Season then you got 'em both.

Posted by: RIP General | July 24, 2007 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Season tickets schmeezon tickets. I got the 5 pack for the Galaxy game and the Cup final and my seats are in section 509 (might as well be 5009). What a crock.

Id rather watch from my couch.

Posted by: Hacksaw | July 24, 2007 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Mr. Duggan, are your 509 tix just for the Galaxy match? Mine are, and I'm back in the Premium lower bowl seating for other matches.

Posted by: Logan Circle | July 24, 2007 4:25 PM | Report abuse

hacksaw - that is why you get GOOOD season tickets!! 509?? YIKES I did not even know RFK was that big.

305 baby!! if you get the front row you don't get any obstructed views!!

Posted by: bobf | July 24, 2007 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Well when we get a new stadium, everyone's seat will be excellent! However, this may be in 2020 the way DC Gov is moving.

I say it is time for "United in Virginia". Time to pull the troops together and put pressure on DC. If they don't want a DCU Stadium, Virginia will be more than happy. Lots of land and roads leading to Dulles (and soon Metro).

All in Favor say Aye!

Uh, no. The team belongs in DC.

Goal.com is reporting Veron rejected our offer: http://goal.com/en-us/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=362353

Posted by: Dave | July 24, 2007 6:05 PM | Report abuse

We need a young person, Veron is great but too old, find someone young, keep finding the emilio, fred, type, don't waste the money. Fernando Arce for Morelia has played great for El Tri recently, 1 million to the winner, pachuca must be the favorite, go dc!

dcunited.com says they will have the game live.....awesome!!!!!!

"...my seats are in section 509 (might as well be 5009)...Id rather watch from my couch."

Section 509 may be too high up, but IMHO, seats at the front of the upper deck (say, section 409) are a great deal. You are just above the mezzanine, overhanging the lower deck, with a good view of the entire pitch. Remember that the principal TV cameras are placed in the mezzanine. If any location in the lower deck truly provided a better view, you can be sure that the TV cameras would have dibs on that location.

"Major League Soccer and Benfica reached an agreement on a $2 million transfer fee for the 18-year-old American, but Adu and the Portuguese club could not work out contract terms, a person familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly."

I thought MLS wanted 5-7 million. Will Freddy play on a B team, he won't play on the A team and is years from proving himself.....will he stay and would they want him, 2 million is nothing, what a bust! but take it why we can

Here's the latest stadium update from WTOP, which I heard on the radio by dawn's early light: http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=596&sid=1199011.

It's nice that KP is down in Argentina scouting talent, and maybe he'll find something useful for next season, because it's too late for this one. They've done a good job building the components around a DP, but never had any intent to get one this season, and lets face it, they got looped a bit by other teams. Considering the level of talent we're facing around the league, we should be pleased with the 4th or 5th place finish we'll struggle to get. It's kind of a lowly time, but I'm not being a fatalist: We'll get a stadium and a really good DP, just not this year. Accept that we're in a 'Hudson' year and enjoy it.
