Good News, Bad News for DCU

[UPDATED!]

Bryan Namoff and Guy-Roland Kpene, longtime members of United's Hamstring Club, participated in full-field workouts today. While it would seem unlikely they would play Sunday vs. Club America because of their lack of recent game experience, they could be available Wednesday at Houston or next weekend at New England.

Meantime, Jaime Moreno was again limited to jogging around the training grounds and undergoing individual exercises. Stephen deRoux has a groin issue, while Greg Vanney remained inside for treatment on an ankle injury.

Moreno ruled himself out of playing Sunday and when asked about the prospects of being ready next week, he said: "We just want to be careful. The hamstring pull is kind of hard to tell when you are ready. It might feel fine, but definitely my leg is weak. That's why right now I am working on strengthening. I talked to Tommy and we definitely don't want to rush it. I'm going to take my time and see how it goes."

Soehn on Vanney for Sunday: "I'm not sure. We're going to wait until he's 100 percent. He's got a lingering injury from when we got him and I don't think he's doing us any good or himself any good playing through it. I want to see him at his best, and until he's 100 percent fit, we're going to make sure he's healthy."

But what of this story in the UK that Veron is coming?

jk :)

Posted by: RIP General | July 27, 2007 12:15 PM | Report abuse

That sucks, I was hoping to see Jaime against America this weekend.

Hey Goff, any news on when/if those two young argentines might visit RFK for a trial/loan?

Posted by: Murr | July 27, 2007 12:16 PM | Report abuse

Anybody familiar with Club América? What were the team's strengths and weaknesses in their midweek game? I'd like to know more about them before Sunday's game.

Posted by: SSMD | July 27, 2007 12:16 PM | Report abuse

No truth to Veron story.

Young Argentines might come on trial in a week or two. Nothing set yet. Keep in mind that, even if they are added to the roster, these are inexperienced players who would begin as reserves for DCU.

Posted by: Goff | July 27, 2007 12:19 PM | Report abuse

Nothing on the conflicting reports on Veron? This thing seems to be all over the place. He's coming soon, he's coming later, he's going to EPL, etc...

Daily mail says yes:

Goal.com says no:

We wait with bated breath.

You're a step ahead of me, Goff. Thanks for the update on Veron.

Posted by: KR in DC | July 27, 2007 12:22 PM | Report abuse

Goff, sorry if you've covered this, but what's your relationship with Brian Straus of the Express? Do you all collaborate on stories and reporting? Chat? I bring this up bc he strongly implied that Jimmy was going to play on Sunday. Was that accurate at the time or should I not trust the DC United stories in the Express?

"D.C. should get a boost Sunday from captain Jaime Moreno, who's been out with a hamstring injury but trained fully on Thursday and should make a difference to an attack that's had trouble finishing off opponents."

Posted by: danj | July 27, 2007 12:25 PM | Report abuse

Moreno did not train at all today. That's all I can tell you. I'll ask Soehn about his status in a few minutes...

Posted by: Goff | July 27, 2007 12:33 PM | Report abuse

What was the good news?

Posted by: uniteo | July 27, 2007 12:59 PM | Report abuse

i would love to see veron come over. especially with the new stadium, that would be great.

Posted by: bryan | July 27, 2007 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Namoff and Kpene are close to coming back. That's not good news?

Posted by: Goff | July 27, 2007 1:08 PM | Report abuse

Goff,

How close are we to signing an international player (Veron)? Our play over the last month has made me pretty aware that we are desperately in need of some assistance.

Posted by: Zach | July 27, 2007 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Veron to DCU might happen. We should know more in the next few days. Otherwise, nothing imminent.

Posted by: Goff | July 27, 2007 1:17 PM | Report abuse

First, Goff, thanks for the news.

However, your definition of "Good news" is a little different than mine. "Close to coming back" sounds a little too much like counting chickens before they hatched. The last thing we need is for Namoff to reinjure it while he is training for his comeback....

BTW - did you see the YouTube video of the Argentine U-20s destroying their hotel? It is all the scandal here...

Posted by: Lost in BA | July 27, 2007 1:17 PM | Report abuse

So, Soehn is saying Vanney was injured when we got him?? So we traded a healthy 24 year old for an injured 33 year old?? Not good...

Posted by: Un-Payne-like move | July 27, 2007 1:19 PM | Report abuse

----

the way things have been going with injuries and results, two key players on the verge of returning is considered good news for this club. sorry to disappoint you.

Posted by: Goff | July 27, 2007 1:20 PM | Report abuse

We don't need Vanney. McTavish and Burch are clearly ready. let vanney heal, all the way into retirement.

"So, Soehn is saying Vanney was injured when we got him?? So we traded a healthy 24 year old for an injured 33 year old?? Not good..."

I have it from a very good source here in Argentina that Erpen needs sugery but is playing through it until the end of the season. So maybe it was even.

Also, there is a very interesting article in the Argentine press today about Veron and how he seems unhappy with his club. It doesn't conclude anything but it speculates as to all the reasons he is not content.

Posted by: Lost in BA | July 27, 2007 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Kpene returning is certainly good news. Unless you're happy with Addlery...

Vanney being unable to play could also be considered good news.

But Veron would be better news.

Posted by: Shatz | July 27, 2007 1:29 PM | Report abuse

I'm with you uniteo...maybe the good news is coming in the "More in a few minutes..."

Posted by: DE | July 27, 2007 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Does MLS not require players to complete medicals before trades? If this is true about Vanney and Erpen how could they pass their medical.

As long as we can pull out some wins and make the playoffs, I would say that taking a conservative approach with Jaime especially is the best move. The key here is a team that is fit for that final end of season run. Maybe Soehn is thinking ahead of all of us.

Posted by: Sean G | July 27, 2007 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Why all the badmouthing of Vanney??? Is Soehn the only guy who likes him??

Posted by: Freddie B | July 27, 2007 1:59 PM | Report abuse

So Vanney's been playing hurt since he got there and is still doing (in my opinion) a better job than Erpen did the majority of the time?

I'm glad so many fans wrote him off after a week or two of playing injured.

Posted by: Todd H. | July 27, 2007 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Oops, left my desk and 30 minutes elapsed - so forget my last post.

And I guess the stuff about Vanney not playing is pretty good news. In fact, I wonder if Tommy is spinning this news to save Vanney his pride, when in fact, he is being benched because he sucks.

If we did indeed trade a healthy Erpfu for a gimpy, already slow, Vanney, then I'm even more displeased with this trade.

Posted by: DE | July 27, 2007 2:07 PM | Report abuse

People are bashing vanney because he's been mediocre at best since he returned from France. Also, he's slower than Erpen. Erpen was in great form when we returned to the 4-4-2.

We're bashing vanney because McTavish is already better, faster and less mistake prone than him. It was a stupid, stupid trade. There are a t least 7 other guys on colorado that would be better than vanney we could've traded for, or better yet, trade for cap space. Instead we put a gimpy piece of crap on our backline.

Posted by: F*ck Vanney | July 27, 2007 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Well, after taking a deep breath I feel alot better about things. We're currently 3 points out of first place in the East, with a game or two in hand on everyone except New England. This isn't bad considering we're not playing well, and we've been missing alot of players due to injuries. Our players are healing up, the coach is letting them rest so they can heal, and our management is willing to spend money on a DP. All in all, we're in a really good place considering.

"I have it from a very good source here in Argentina that Erpen needs sugery but is playing through it until the end of the season. So maybe it was even. "

Is Erpen that much of a celebrity in ARG, that anyone other than his mom would know this? Or maybe it is from his mom.

Posted by: gringo | July 27, 2007 2:17 PM | Report abuse

Veron must be frustrated that Estudiantes has sold Pavone and Sosa. I'm not sure that adequate replacements are coming. And part of his reason for staying is to play Libertadores, but that isn't until 2008.

In other words--I'm not sure what is so special about waiting from now until December(when he said he'd rethink things).
Sudamericana? He could have that with DC!

"Is Erpen that much of a celebrity in ARG, that anyone other than his mom would know this? Or maybe it is from his mom."

He is well known in Gualayachu, where he is from, as it is a small town and his father is a popular coach for kids. But I am going to pull a Goff and say an unnamed source close to the situation.

"Veron must be frustrated that Estudiantes has sold Pavone and Sosa. I'm not sure that adequate replacements are coming."

They did sign someone today, though.

Do you have evidence that Colorado was willing to trade anyone other than Vanney? The Rapids roster is not like some sort of flea market that United management can rummage through and take whomever they like.

LOL

Posted by: Lost in BA | July 27, 2007 3:20 PM | Report abuse

But United can rummage through the Rapids and see all of the players that they used to have. Well, at least on the back line.

I'd much rather have Petke, Prideaux, or Erpfu instead of Vanney.

Request for Goff.

Can you start rating Mr. Soehn's coaching in your post match blog...

Thanks

Lastly can you comment on the poplar point t-shirts made available at Cafe Press?

Two weeks in International Falls, MN - in January. I don't recall Mastroeni playing for DC.

Prideaux.

my bad, I seem to have this false memory of Mastro playing for DC briefly... no idea why.

good thing this is an anonymous forum

F*ck Vanney-

Erpen was in great form in the 442? Really? I must have been watching some other DC United team with a different guy named Erpen. The backline switch saw Erpen go from awful to mediocre. Just because it's popular to despise Vanney based on his age and a couple games he has played while injured for us does not make Erpen the new Eddie Pope. I am not necessarily a Vanney supporter (or an Erpen hater), but the knee-jerk stuff on the topic is absurd.

When Namoff returns, would anyone else still like to see Burch at left back instead of Gros? He was disappointing in the Open Cup debacle, but has been pretty good when playing with the senior team. This also gives us better depth at outside midfield, which could free up Fred to cover Moreno's absence (if that becomes a prolonged situation).

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | July 27, 2007 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Wait a minute - why didn't we trade Erpfu for Eddie Pope?!? It would have been a perfect last hurrah for #23.

Opportunity missed.

Posted by: DE | July 27, 2007 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Dammit Veron, stop flirting. Make out with DCU already.

What was the bad news? Namoff, Kpene and Moreno getting healthy. Vanney not playing. It's a win-win-win-win in my book.

Thx,

Jay!

Again, what indication is there that RSL would have been interested in such a trade? The RSL roster isn't a flea market, either.

I second that. I would also be curious for ratings for the ref and the other team... Maybe I am spoiled by Olé....
