Matchday 14: DCU at Houston

Greetings from Houston.......

Sorry for the delay.......

Here are your starters:

*Perkins in goal
*McTavish on the right, Vanney and Boswell in the middle, Gros on the left
*Fred on the right, Carroll behind Gomez, Olsen on the left
*Addlery and Emilio up top

Subs: Nolly, deRoux, Burch, Moose, Dyachenko, Simms, Mediate.

-- Vagner, the young Brazilian defender from Atletico Mineiro, will probably begin his trial Friday.
-- United had a heck of a time getting here Saturday. Their original flight out of National was cancelled. They were re-booked on a flight out of the same airport, but it meant connecting through Atlanta. So they scrambled for direct-flight options and found two -- out of Dulles and BWI. So half the team headed to Loudoun County, the other half to Baltimore County. Both groups arrived in Houston within 15 minutes of each other but four hours late. Life on the road is not always fun. (My flight today? No such problems -- whew.)

As usual, this is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame venting/rejoicing. I will be back very late tonight with player ratings and bonus quotes. Tomorrow, perhaps some off-field news (no, not the stadium). Enjoy the match.

Lets hope Houston shot their wad on Thursday in their dismantling of the Metros, and are worn out. My prediction : DC 2 Houston 2, and that would be fine with me.

It'll be interesting to see how Boswell and Vanney pair in the central defense. Hopefully things aren't as porous as Wednesday versus Kansas City...I've a feeling that we'll pay for the same type of mistakes tonight.

I would be thrilled with a tie. Houston is a tough place to go get a result.

Well, that and I don't like Vanney in the back. He is Erpen without the athletic ball winning ability. He makes the same number of mistakes, lacks speed like Erpen, but doesn't at least have the upside of covering his teammates and making big plays that no one else in the defense can make.

I understand DC not wanting to make Erpen a senior international, but was this the best way to get it done?

Why does MLS prohibit charter flights.

Posted by: pc | July 8, 2007 8:14 PM | Report abuse

It would be a competitive advantage for teams that can actually afford charters.
Someday, when all teams are financially equal, it will happen.

Very unlucky, two inches lower and Gomito would've had the perfect retort there.

I like DC being physical on the road. DC has always had problems with teams playing them physical, nice to see them be able to play that way.

""I would be thrilled with a tie.""

Go kiss your sister, then.

What the hell was that flying jumping jack attempt to close down the shot?

Don't they teach little kids in Jamaica not to leave their feet?

stinks.

Its the Dynamo. They are strong, and going to make us work hard. Half of me is angry its not even at the half. The other half is thankful its only 0 - 1.

Hmm, great possession by DCU for a while there, but ultimately never generated any real chances in the run of play. Dynamo seemed to have better chances even when they weren't seeing the ball much, but after they started to win the possession battle, there were some dodgy moments for United.

Seems like a game where Moreno might create something out of nothing, but with out him, I dont know where that would come from.

Houston has a very dangerous team. DC did well at times to build possession in the first half, but Gomez is having a hard time.

I don't think Gros has played well, and we shall see how long he remains in the back four. So far I like Vanney, more than I thought I would.

We lack quality going forward tonight.

This is bloody painful in particular after watching Argentina.

I have a hunch that Garth Lagerway thinks the heat can affect your play. Amazing.

Man Addlery stinks, first he has no touch and controls the ball away from the attack and then passes it out of bounds.

Posted by: G-Dub | July 8, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Sub out the big guns and give it up. If we don't score by the 70th minute it's all over.

finally the nightmare is over. carroll is out

We looked better than last week, but Houston is definitely the better team tonight.

Posted by: Markus | July 8, 2007 10:22 PM | Report abuse

wow. houston just shut us down tonight. we were looking ragged 'n' tired 'n' frustrated. too bad, obviously, but i'm looking forward to our rebound next saturday. see y'all there!

I thought we played well, they just played really well, also, and the big break went their way.

"This is bloody painful in particular after watching Argentina. Posted by: Sofia Boy"

Agreed.

Back line looked pretty good. Fred offered nothing but a chance to give Houston the ball back. Adderly and Dychenko should have been released last weekend, neither deserve to wear the jersey. Gomez struggled to connect a pass or even touch the ball for that matter. The subs offered little, I would have rather seen Deroux and Moose to offer some pace and width to the game.United need another forward that can really play.
