Matchnight: USA-URU, MEX-ARG, DCU-HCI

A big night calls for a big forum. This is the place for all your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts concerning the under-20s, Copa and Open Cup. I am hitting the road and heading for Landisville. (Has there ever been a Washington Post dateline from Landisville, Pa.???) I'll try to join you later from Estadio Hempfield, but for now, the floor is yours. Giddyup!

I'm beginning to despair. They're not going to air the U20 match on ESPN are they?

Posted by: Matt | July 11, 2007 2:27 PM | Report abuse

I havent seen, Ferrari or Preston on any of the U-20 world cup games. How good are they, or why is it that they havent played.

Posted by: JAV7 | July 11, 2007 2:33 PM | Report abuse

My guess is that part of the reason they haven't played, is that the starters have just been playing to well to sit down, riding the hot hand and all that. Also 2 of the games have come right down to the end, and the Poland game they had to use an early sub cause of injury in the defense.

What a great day to be a soccer fan.

Ok, so I made that part up. I hope to see some of you all at "Estadio Hempfield." I will have my scarf!

Everyone drive carefully...don't hit any Amish riding in their horse drawn buggies. Seriously...there can be a lot on the road around there, even at night.

What a terrible day to be married to a soccer fan.

Posted by: RK | July 11, 2007 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Yes, that is no joke, out there it gets really dark at night and the roads are mostly 2 laners. Please be careful, we want everybody back.

Posted by: DCAustinite | July 11, 2007 3:01 PM | Report abuse

My U12 boys travel squad played in a tournament in Estadio Hempfield earlier this summer - mind the horse-and-buggies on your drive out there!

Posted by: MK | July 11, 2007 3:02 PM | Report abuse

I think U-20 team should be played the same 11 starters, they have ready chemistry in between

Posted by: OrlandoGator | July 11, 2007 3:14 PM | Report abuse

Matt,

Chances are no. It's too late I think. Try watching it on the web with SopCast (http://livefooty.doctor-serv.com/). You have to install SopCast first.

Jav7,

Ferrari is really good, if we need a goal he'll be on in a hurry for someone like Rogers. He's got a legit shot at being an international striker for us. Zimmerman is good too, though I dont think hes on the same level as Ferrari at the moment. Zimmerman plays for Hamburg (Think Feilhaber), but hasnt cracked the first team yet. Ferrari is over at Sampadoria in Serie A and has a good chance of getting some quality minutes next year. We havent really seen Zimmerman or Ferrari because Adu/Zizzo/Rogers/Altidore have been SO good and theres no reason to throw that off.

As for me, I'll be streaming the U-20's and GolTV'ing the Mexico/Argentina game!

Greetings from Landisville. Yes, it is rural. I can't believe they're playing a game here. Should be fun. The DCU merchandise hut is hoppin'.

Posted by: Goff | July 11, 2007 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Goff - How are the field conditions out there in Landisville? I'm having flashbacks to DCU's terrible performance on the turf out in Salt Lake City. Possibly this is a wash since the Islanders don't play there either?

Posted by: tmc | July 11, 2007 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Big news - just got the starting lineups for the U20.

Perk is starting. Seitz is on the bench. Collision with Lima and Sarkodie must have been more severe than originally thought.

Posted by: JSF | July 11, 2007 6:48 PM | Report abuse

Anyone got any other streaming solutions? Livefooty's not very mac-friendly.

And I wouldn't be surprised to find an Estadio Hempfield in Colombia.... or at least an estadio near a hemp field.

Posted by: bbarrie | July 11, 2007 6:54 PM | Report abuse

OK,

Who else is surprised that Goff has connectivity in Landisville?

Is the DCU Merch Hut the busiest place for miles?

Oh, who's actually starting?

Posted by: Kim | July 11, 2007 6:57 PM | Report abuse

artificial surface. seems okay.

DCU starters: Nolly; Mediate, Boswell, Burch; J. Carroll, B. Carroll, Simms, deRoux, Dyachenko; North, Addlery.

Posted by: Goff | July 11, 2007 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Hilarious that Goff has internet. I'm stuck in class for another hour or so - tragic about Seitz. If we go to PKs in this tournament, we are going to need him in net.

Who is on the bench for United?

Posted by: Go Penn State! | July 11, 2007 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Well, I guess that's a ringing endorsement for a wireless service.

Intriguing starting lineup. Boswell and Burch together in the center? Simms and deRoux flanking the midfield?

I'm surprised that Moose isn't playing.

I'm having trouble finding the link to Limarzi's play-by-play on the United site. Has anyone else had more success?

Posted by: Go Penn State! | July 11, 2007 7:37 PM | Report abuse

WMET is streaming a Spanish talk show right now. Doesn't look good for listening in on the match. Goffinho, can you let us know as scores happen?

Posted by: Muy Bien | July 11, 2007 7:39 PM | Report abuse

I can't find anything, Penn. If anyone else finds out, please post.

Posted by: Sean | July 11, 2007 7:39 PM | Report abuse

DCU playing a 3-5-2 with Boswell in middle, Bruch on left, Mediate on right. B. Carroll and Simms behind Dyachenko, deRoux on the left, J. Carroll on the right. Addlery and North up top. Subs: Moose, Gros, McTavish, Mupier, Crowe.

Islanders nearly get a PK call, North misses short volley.

Certainly frustrated...but it doesn't change anything...you have to learn to lose with class. Based on 90 minutes, IMO they deserved to win, but I am happy to finally get some breaks and luck headed the US way.

If I had to choose one of the three results to not go my way tonight, it clearly would have been DC losing. USA had to win and Mex just went down 2-0 on a pretty Messi goal. USOC would have been nice, but it's just not that big a deal.

That was Rongens's best coaching move of the tourney: grabbing Bradley by his jersey and dragging him away. Of course he probably gets fired for assaulting *the* son - which is weird since its his coaching that should show him the door.

I didn't seriously entertain the thought until Gooch caught a bloody lip in the gold cup final. that Argentina-Brazil final on Sunday should be a thing of beauty. Argentina certainly looks like they could kick the s**t out of anyone right now.

and speaking of Brazil, their U-20 match with Spain is just starting on Galavision (which also had the US game). it sucks that many of you apparently don't get that channel, because this has been an awesome night to be a soccer fan whose wife is working late. and i think i've become conversational in Spanish (the announcers at one point compared Akban to Lenny Kravitz). ESPN is ridiculous for not showing the US game, though it was a much uglier affair than the Brazil game.

any word on Altidore's injury and the potential yellow card repercussions?

Posted by: jamie | July 11, 2007 11:10 PM | Report abuse

Argentina demonstrates their class again, though they started slow. Their sloppy defense almost gave up a couple of goals in the first half. Mexico hit the post/crossbar twice, once in each half if I remember correctly. Still, the Argentines controlled most of the game in midfield, and Messi and Tevez could not be kept quiet for the entire game. The Sunday final should be excellent.

Everyone who has not seen Messi's goal tonight must find it on YouTube. Sublime.

Posted by: SSMD | July 11, 2007 11:18 PM | Report abuse

Uruguay played an ugly game, diving any time a US player breathed on them, hacking Altidore, Adu, etc. to death and generally playing a long ball style that was horrible to watch. The US wasn't on its "A" game but it won anyway, which is a good sign. Defense still has a penchant for poor clearances, a la the goal against Brazil.

Posted by: Luis | July 11, 2007 11:27 PM | Report abuse

Of course Mexico loses with class to Argentina, they're SUPPOSED to lose to them.

When you look at the Mexican track record against the US this decade, they can't fathom losing to us, so it's not like they're used to it and know how to handle it.

Oh..... wait.....

Sorry, but I agree w/ the above poster: happy to have DCU drop out of a Cup no one seems too particularly interested in (including the reserve squad) than see Mexico do well.

CITY ISLANDERS!

Good luck flopping out of your other tournaments. Pretty soon you won't get freebie invites, and your trophy case will be covered in cobwebs. And you'll be playing in some distant suburb.

Posted by: Mastodon Juan | July 11, 2007 11:59 PM | Report abuse

Brazil gets 2 quick ones, but Spain pulls one back off of a non-called "hand of god"-type deflection. still, it looks like Spain might bag out early from another World Cup, though you have to sympathize with them for winning their group but getting stuck with Brazil in the round of 16. U.S. might be looking at a rematch in the semis if they get past Austria (as they should).

2-1 Brazil at half time.

The roster decision was not an easy one, but he needs to take some responsibility for going one-and-out in the Open Cup with that lineup.

So much for DCU being about winning cups, they haven't been championship caliber since Ryan Nelson left. They win lots on meaningless games but when all the chips are on the table (playoffs or tournaments) they lack the metal to win. They are a nice little MLS team who wins games just not championship.

Washington, D.C.: Any chance the U.S. U-20 game will be moved to ESPN like the game vs. Brazil was?

Steven Goff: No. They are contractually bound to maintain their normal schedule. Same goes with the quarterfinals. If, however, the Americans advance to the semis, ESPN will try to slide the game to one of its mainstream networks. Galavision (Spanish) is also an option, but not available on all cable systems.

Yeah Will from NJ - boy that was a humiliating result. Beating a makeshift lineup of MLS reserves. Wow. DCU should be crushed.

Whatever, DCU rightfully treated the match as game experience for the reserves. The only first team regulars that played last night were Boswell, Gros, and McTavish (if you could call him a regular) and they only played 45' each. Next year's Open Cup may be treated differently, but with two international tournaments - DCU have better things to worry about. BTW, three of the four teams competing SuperLiga have now bowed out of the Open Cup...coincidence? (speaking of which, anyone notice that Galaxy officially released its new logo and color scheme?).

But over 5000 spectators at the game - that's nice to see.

Posted by: DE | July 12, 2007 8:56 AM | Report abuse

So you have to go to a bar to watch the games. Boy, what a bummer....

3-0 v. Argentina isn't that much different than 4-1, is it? So much for the dominant Mexicans. That's the best they could do after being together for 2 months? At least our tadpoles managed a goal.

If you send your backups against a professional team you're asking for trouble. DCU either totally underestimated their opponent or they just don't really care. If they don't really care, then they shouldn't be in the Cup.

As for the U-20's, Bradley is like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. He can do great things, but he has got to stay in control. That sillyness at the end is the kind of thing that gets players banned and we need him for the rest of the tourney.
I have to give the US credit for not flopping and rolling around after every cheap foul. It was pretty impressive. I don't know what that ref was smoking, but some of those cards were really weak. Maybe he as applying for an MLS position.

Anyway, good soccer weekend coming up.

I see it differently. DC definitely cares. But they have a roster full of players who haven't had much MLS playing time. If the reserve players can't beat a team of guys who aren't good enough to be on MLS rosters, why would the coaching staff (or the fans, for that matter) ever expect them to help in other competitions (Superliga? MLS? Playoffs?)? I didn't see the game, but it's a pathetic result.

Nolly's comment "It's tough to play these kinds of games where the other team is going 150 miles per hour the whole game...We could just never get the ball settled down." is embarassing. Shouldn't United be the MORE SKILLED of the two sides? The DC United first team never plays the ball quickly agains the United reserves?

The sky isn't falling or anything, but maybe some of these guys are getting paid exactly what they're worth on the open market.

Posted by: DWE4 | July 12, 2007 9:08 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, I don't think it's a big deal either way, nor does it say anything about the quality of DC or even DC's reserves. You just can't expect to throw together a bunch of guys who don't practice together regularly as a unit against a team that probably spent the past month preparing a gameplan for this game and be surprised if they don't show well. Although, it's a bit sad that we didn't have anyone on the field that apparently could dribble a few guys and score -- but such is life.

It just seems to me that we need to take these games a bit more seriously if we are going to participate.

I don't understand, though, why given all the flippin fields in rural pennsylvania they played the game on turf.

Anyway, gotta go buy my Beckham jersey... only $80.

well, that was a fully ironic way for the City Islanders "game that probably isn't going to happen" publicity stunt to end. I mean, selling tickets for $1 to see David Beckham's Galaxy play in the US Open cup if only the Islanders are doing well enough to make it to the point of a match up with the gals (if it didn't happen it was going to be donated for parks). They have been selling these tickets since he signed and saying it probably wouldn't happen because they wouldn't get far enough and now all they need to do is beat New England to potentially face... the Richmond Kickers. Hopefully the sold out non-event will make the parks in Harrisburg much nicer.

Was at the game last night ..... was disappointed how very few USA fans turned out. Were far outnumbered by the Uruguay fans in attendance. USA did not play pretty football but they pulled out the win in the end. Uruguay was full of cheap-shotting poor sports. I was right behidn the goal and watched as the stomped on Altidore's foot before the corner that got him fired up. They were continually doing this stuff throughout the game.

The scuffle after the game with Bradley was a result of the same stuff ... cry baby URU player pissed that they lost and the US fans were celebratign the win stomped on Bradleys foot. USA players sat out on the pitch forever (were doing their cool down stretching on the field) as I am guessing FIFA wanted to clear the tunnel and locker room of the poor sports from URU before letting the US in.

The poor sportsmanship must be a trademark of the Uruguayans ... the senior team did the same stuff after the Brazil loss in Copa America ... their fans did it last night after the loss .... definate pattern there.
