SuperLiga Matchday: DCU vs. Club America

Rain, anyone?

Sloppy day at RFK. The baseball tarp was covering the infield area to keep the temporary turf from turning into mush before kickoff. Lots of America supporters already in Lot 8 -- a sign that, despite the weather, there will be a nice turnout.

First, the DCU lineup.......

No changes: Perkins; Gros, McTavish, Boswell, Burch; Fred, Carroll, Gomez, Olsen; Dyachenko, Emilio. Subs: Nolly, J. Carroll, Namoff, Simms, Mediate, Kpene, Addlery. Vanney is out with an ankle injury.

*I asked Kevin Payne if, in fact, United has received a response from the "mystery Argentine" (aka Veron) about the club's contract offer. He said they have not and they hope to get final word by the end of this coming week. Payne had previous said that the team would find out by today. So according to the boss, no decision has been made. My take? As I mentioned on the blog earlier today, I have heard that Veron has already turned down the deal. Judging form Payne's most recent comments, though, perhaps United has come back with yet another offer and is holding out hope that Veron will change his mind. I still believe their best chance is to get him for next season. Stay tuned.....

*Dave Kasper tells me that, sometime late in September or early in October after the Nationals play their final home game, the RFK folks plan to remove the entire playing surface and roll out new grass without any infield allowance. Baseball, my friends, will be gone for good. They also plan to remove other baseball material, such as the outfield fence. No word on whether seating will be restored behind the north goal for the playoffs or MLS Cup.

*Club spokesman Doug Hicks says that only 400 tickets remain for the Beckham/Galaxy visit on Aug. 9 and that they are available as part of multi-game packages only.

As usual, your pregame, in-game and postgame observations are welcome here.
