No Vanney? But who on the team is qualified to make woefully ineffective corners and freekicks? Can we trust Gomez to deliver the same consistently bad attempts all game long?

I don't see this lineup putting up more than a goal, so let's hope for a return to form for Perkins...

Dear Dyachenko and Emilio,
We need goals to win.
Thanks,
Fans

I watched part of the Galaxy game online last night, but now DC United game is not showing up on the website. Oh well, I guess it will have to be in espanol for me.

I clicked on 'More Superliga Coverage' and that seemed to do it. Audio breaks pretty regularly, though.

The dcunited.com site says that the match is being carried on radio by WMET (1160 AM), which it is not, so far as I can tell.

Thanks! The audio was initially of poor quality, but some engineer must have tweaked it, as it has gotten better in the last couple of minutes.

Dios mio...Emilio...
Great feed by Dyachenko.

BTW, commentator is a bit boring, but he is naming everyone that touches the ball, thank God...
Posted by: RK | July 25, 2007 8:44 PM | Report abuse
The field cost United a 2nd goal...did you see that ball kick up just before Emilio hit it. It hit the temp grass that sits over the baseball diamond.
Posted by: George H. | July 25, 2007 8:45 PM | Report abuse
when the damn baseball infield starts costing us goals in such obvious fashion, something has to be done. 34th minute-ish, and Dyachenko feeds Emilio for a sure goal, but the ball ramps off the turf cover the third base dirt, and Emilio skies it over net. That is a certain goal for Emilio on any other pitch in the league. Total crap.

The slo-mo replay of Emilio's miss showed the ball hop on the baseball turf line.

do fans of the mexican league actually put up with the diving that morelia is doing?

God, this is so much better than ESPN. Can't it always be this way?
Posted by: Colm | July 25, 2007 8:48 PM | Report abuse
RK, the commentator says all of the players names because he's the radio announcer for the local DC station. His feed has been added to the MLS.net video feed so they would have an English announcer.

first time i have seen any turf prevent a goal
this is a game we must win, morelia is tired and are not in form and missing key players

What a pass by Fred, through the legs!!!
this is a professional league and that is the field we get, thats pathetic!

you must not remember the game earlier in the year when troy got his foot caught in the seam of the basepath, and missed an easy roller. don't be so excited for the teams to switch sides.

the ref seems to be lettings things go quite a bit.
now, totally off topic, but over half I was searching the web for all things mls and read this:
"Major League Soccer and Benfica reached an agreement on a $2 million transfer fee for the 18-year-old American, but Adu and the Portuguese club could not work out contract terms, a person familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly. "

Well..Drew Moors's red card was BS last night - I'm glad to see that the ref tonight dished one out to the Mexican player. It's weak, on both accounts IMO, but at least it's consistent...

what was boswell thinking on that foul! WHAT AN IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous | July 25, 2007 9:25 PM | Report abuse
it took a long time but good to see the ref red-carded that guy for the retaliation. that was really dumb, right in front of the ref.
Posted by: pat | July 25, 2007 9:25 PM | Report abuse
we're lucky boswell didn't get tossed too, he deserved it for that kick.
Posted by: matt | July 25, 2007 9:27 PM | Report abuse
He did retaliate right in front of the ref, but it sure looked to me like he got a boot in the johnson. I've got a little sympathy for that.

Posted by: united4dc | July 25, 2007 9:45 PM | Report abuse
dc doesn't have a clue how to play with a man up, no control, no change of attack, no build, morelia is in control, we should be on top of their goal with many passes, we are clueless

What's the deal with 4 subs?!?!
Posted by: What????? | July 25, 2007 9:49 PM | Report abuse
Superliga lets you use 4 subs.
Posted by: P | July 25, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse
4 subs, I saw that last night and it still doesn't sit well today.
That was one helluva goal from Morelia.
Posted by: Aljarov | July 25, 2007 9:52 PM | Report abuse
...1 man and 1 goal up and you tie. :(
Lots of chances but as with most of MLS, the problem is finishing. Also, doesn't hurt that the defense is a bit suspect.
Posted by: P | July 25, 2007 9:53 PM | Report abuse
4 subs, so DC fans will spend the next several years ranting about "Cheatin' Morelia."
Posted by: Mastodon Juan | July 25, 2007 9:58 PM | Report abuse
Doesn't the U.S. Open Cup also use a four-sub protocol? It may have be a concession to the fact that these competitions are shoehorned into clubs' schedules that are already pretty crowded.
Posted by: Go Penn State! | July 25, 2007 9:58 PM | Report abuse
Four subs PLUS the goalie if needed (according to Telefutura last night). it is pre-season for the Mexican teams and MLS is the most important season for the US teams so they shouldn't have to burn out their players. I think it's OK.
Cheers!

Just before they signed off, they showed a shot of the Barra Brava section. One person dressed in white clearly had a beer bottle in her left hand. Isn't that a stadium security glitch?
Posted by: Go Penn State! | July 25, 2007 10:05 PM | Report abuse
Let's face it....This United team is pretty average. The defense is suspect, there is no leadership and creativity from the midfielders...We need some serious help! That should have been an easy victory tonight but we ended up tying a team with 10 players!
Posted by: Charles | July 25, 2007 10:06 PM | Report abuse
Wow, a man up for most of the second half, playing at home, against a mid-table Mexican side, that isn't quite match fit, and D.C. gets a point. Sweet...
Posted by: Ugh | July 25, 2007 10:08 PM | Report abuse
against a second rate team, we should be easily able to put them away, especially with their "new star" red carded.
our defense is fine, better without vanney. Burch looked good and mctavish moved the ball well. Carroll should be sitting next to his brother.
Posted by: therealfan | July 25, 2007 10:10 PM | Report abuse
What should be really scary for United supporters is that there is no bench on this team (of course, most of MLS is in the same boat). But to play internationally you should have some options that can change a game. DC doesn't have anyone that fits that bill at this moment.
Maybe Kevin Payne will be back on Aerolineas Argentinas sooner than later.
Cheers!
Posted by: Roberto | July 25, 2007 10:10 PM | Report abuse
DC worked hard, the mexican players as a whole are more skilled than american players, it shows when you compare the national teams, americans lag in certain areas....too bad the Mexican teams are not bringing their best for the tournament, the timing of the tournament should be changed....these are just scrimmages for the Mexican squads and to say that the winner is the best is nonsense.
Posted by: Paco | July 25, 2007 10:12 PM | Report abuse
Why did United make only one sub? We have some guys out due to injury, but towards the end of the match several DCU players looked completely gassed. Is B. Carroll that much better than Simms?
Posted by: noptov52 | July 25, 2007 10:12 PM | Report abuse
gros killed the attack every time he had the ball in the final third.
Posted by: pat | July 25, 2007 10:16 PM | Report abuse
if carroll is that much better than simms we are in trouble.
Posted by: therealfan | July 25, 2007 10:18 PM | Report abuse
What is up with using one sub when you can run a team with 10 men off the field with three sets of new legs?
Posted by: Dave | July 25, 2007 10:24 PM | Report abuse
Hilarious. Mexicans (Paco that means you) go out of their way at every turn to remind us "their" teams are playing half strenght and in preseason. I guess its some lame way of reasurring themselves they are sill better then us in the world's game. Especially since when both sides are at full strenght in what really matters (the natonal side) they countinally get humilated. Really humourous. Didnt see any of them shed a tear for MLS sides in the champions cup when the rolls were reversed or mention that we are working off a quarter of their payroll. Once MLS is in the position to loosen up the purse strings we all know it will be no contest because 100% of the worlds players would rather live here.
Posted by: Mountaineer Pride | July 25, 2007 10:27 PM | Report abuse
I guess I'll be be the first to say, the far side AR during the second half missed 3 or 4 very very obvious Offsides where he was well out of position. Including the goal to tie.
I feel like I just got mugged by the referees.

"He did retaliate right in front of the ref, but it sure looked to me like he got a boot in the johnson."
I've now had a chance to review my DVD recording of the match frame by frame, and this statement is correct if "johnson" is a slang term for the knee. (For some reason I am reminded of the august scholarly journal Maledicta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maledicta).)
