Soccer Insider: August 12, 2007 - August 18, 2007

The Aftermath

At halftime, you had a bad feeling about this one, didn't ya? Go ahead. You can admit it. We're all friends here. United wasn't generating much while Columbus was finding space on the flank and serving dangerous balls into the box. Seemed like D.C. had not shaken off its SuperLiga...

Why, yes, the John Hiatt show at Wolf Trap last night was exceptional. Nice of you to ask. Some serious strummin'. Which brings me to this random question: Live music or live soccer? (Pick one) Along those lines, give me your best concert and best match in person. I'll go...

USA Roster Unveiled Tuesday

The USSF will announce tomorrow the national team roster for the Aug. 22 friendly at Sweden. Considering the location and quality of opponent (not to mention the fact that there are three mid-week MLS games and travel demands for domestic players), expect a heavily Euro-based squad. It is an official...

USA-Brazil Is Set

Insider loyalists knew about it yesterday. Everyone else is finding out today. In what is being promoted as the "Clash of Champions," USA-Brazil at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sept. 9 is set. It replaces the USA-Mexico match scheduled for Estadio Azteca, which was cancelled due to "contractual and financial...

What to Read

Well, besides the Insider. *George Solomon looks back at Beckham's visit to RFK. *Mike Wilbon takes your questions. *A D.C. resident worries about the mayor and Poplar Point. *Caps owner Ted Leonsis wonders why D.C.'s meat-and-potatoes "sports" radio station hates soccer so much. Hope for RFK

With baseball abandoning RFK Stadium this fall, the U.S. Soccer Federation has renewed its interest in utilizing the facility in the future for national team matches. The last official international match there was nearly three years ago, which is a shame because RFK was one of the top destinations for...

USA Women vs. New Zealand

With the Women's World Cup approaching and my trip to China a few weeks away, I wanted to experiment with a U.S. in-game forum. The Americans are playing New Zealand today at Soldier Field (1 p.m. Eastern, ESPN2) in their penultimate friendly before heading to Asia. I've spent the past...

Good Week for Goodson

Clarence Goodson, W.T. Woodson High graduate and former Maryland Terrapin standout, is known for his work in FC Dallas's central defense, not in the attack. In the past five days, though, the 6-foot-4 Goodson scored the opening goal during FCD's 2-1 U.S. Open Cup victory at Charleston and headed home...
