Beckham Says He'll Play [UPDATED!]

[UPDATED ON BOTTOM WITH DCU NEWS]

Greetings from Home Depot Center, where the Galaxy just completed a workout in preparation for tomorrow night's SuperLiga semifinal against D.C. United.

David Beckham says his ankle has shown notable improvement and he is ready to contribute. His hope is to play at least a half, but the decision whether he will start is still to be determined by Coach Frank Yallop.

(What's with Beckham and games against United?)

"He'll be on the field at some point," Yallop said. "We're hoping it's a lot of minutes, but we will wait and see tomorrow."

"He feels pretty good. The D.C. game was a good start. He wasn't running as freely as normally, but the way he was knocking the ball around was good. He's desperate to get back out there."

Other Galaxy news: MLS vets Eric Denton and Ian Russell have begun trials. Yallop said he does not have a timeline about when he will decide whether to sign them, but he did not rule out making a move later this week.

Here's more on the Beckham injury situation from the L.A. Times.

United practiced for about 70 minutes with 19 players -- 18 who will be uniform plus Marc Burch, who is suspended because of yellow cards but traveled with the club anyway because D.C. will head straight to Columbus on Thursday for this weekend's league match.

The active roster is Perkins and Nolly; Boswell, Vanney, McTavish and Namoff; Olsen, Fred, Simms, B. Carroll, Gros, Mediate, Gomez and Moose; Emilio, Kpene, Dyachenko and Moreno. Moreno and Gomez looked sharp, but as Tom Soehn cautioned, Moreno needs to be brought along slowly and Gomez has not had any minutes the past two games.

With the international transfer window closing Wednesday, I asked Soehn if United was going to add anyone (there have been no rumblings of a United signing, but I had to ask).

"I'm not sure. Anything is possible. Is it probable? I don't know. Probable, doubtful and possible, that covers it."

United could still sign someone out of contract or make a trade up until the MLS roster deadline, which is in mid-September.

"What's up with Beckham and games against United?" -Goff

Answer: Beckham knows that United are not a but of thugs. Plus we play some pretty classy soccer and he's familiar with us (from the Real Madrid friendly to boot).

Ack! I meant to say: "United are not a bunch of thugs."

These two DC games are also the only ones the Galaxy have had in recent days not on FieldTurf...

He gets to remember what a real football club looks like.

Maybe it's a name thing... just like I don't want any other team named United in MLS, Bex may not like any other team named United other than his beloved ManU... Or he know's we're the best team in MLS, with the most silverware, who have squashed his Galaxy's dreams twice in MLS Cups... I'm just two-centing... ;-) Whatever the reason, it's just nice to have another chance to beat them again with His Majesty on the field...

Posted by: Soy United! | August 14, 2007 4:06 PM | Report abuse

I wonder how many players have had to trial for a team that they started for less than five months ago.

Posted by: Andrew | August 14, 2007 4:07 PM | Report abuse

I agree, Becks knows DC is soft and it will be less physical than other matches in MLS. So, yes he will play.

Posted by: fred | August 14, 2007 4:16 PM | Report abuse

DC is soft?

You have heard of Ben Olsen, right?

You don't think Benny will give Becks a little kick or two to test him out?

Posted by: Chris | August 14, 2007 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Are you saying Benny threatened Becks to get that shirt? :)

Posted by: Bart | August 14, 2007 4:28 PM | Report abuse

If by soft he means not Shalrie Joseph & Jay Heaps and that Ben Olsen is mild in comparison that is a decent arguement. But NE is a little harder than most.

boo. the LATimes link is for subscribers only. Sure, its free, but I don't want to give out my email address just to get a glimpse under Bex's sock.

What are the chances Moreno suits up?

Posted by: bribri | August 14, 2007 4:36 PM | Report abuse

DCU is the best soccer team in the US not only in the MLS. DCU play soccer with style no physically like NE or Dynamo.

Kyle Martino is eligible to play tomorrow, right? He best be looking over his shoulder for a bit of payback relative to his reckless tackle on Fred.

Bets on who tattoos their boot's logo on Martino's person--Benny, Bobby, or Brian?

Posted by: Soy United! | August 14, 2007 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Steven, do you think Beckham will play (or even start) vs the Red Bulls on Saturday??

Posted by: J | August 14, 2007 4:47 PM | Report abuse

Yup, we're ranked 4th in Fouls Committed--295. Benny is only DCU player in top 10.

Don't be silly, Fred will do it himself.

Posted by: noptov52 | August 14, 2007 4:51 PM | Report abuse

My money is on Benny or Brian. I'll put down $10 right now, if gambling were legal, on Brian. Just because he knows he should and he needs to do something or Simms is going to take his spot.

When's the next Bobby Party?

Is Giants Stadium grass or FieldTurd? (misspelling intended)

That'll probably determine whether Becks plays, I would think...

FieldTurd with Gridiron Lines, to boot! My guess is Bex won't play--they're not a 'United' team... ;-)

You guys think it'll be BC? Who says he'd even start? Simms has been very good the past couple games, and I see no reason to bench him. It's not like he needs a rest. I'll take Namoff on this one.

Besides, why should we bother getting a revenge foul on Martino? I'm sure it hurts him much more to look in the mirror and wonder what happened to his career. Do you think he still waits by the phone when there are national team call-ups going out?

Juan-John:

Giants Stadium is the lowest-grade FieldTurf surface in MLS. If Beckham plays a half against us, I'm guessing LA will say he had a flare-up of the injury and sit him.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 14, 2007 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Giants is even worse than Rice Eccles- I thought RSL was the hands down champion of poor surfaces in MLS.

Posted by: bluemeanies | August 14, 2007 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Not too familiar with Martino as a player, but will admit that I found him okay in the broadcast booth during the NE-LA game -during which the SuperLiga match was being heavily advertised.

Wonder if LA will manage to sell-out the stadium. Today's announcement should help.

Posted by: emanon | August 14, 2007 5:19 PM | Report abuse

I would be very surprised if they would sell out a Tuesday night game on short notice. I don't care what they call themselves...
They are in Carson,CA not Los Angeles. It would take two hours to get there from LA in normal rush hour traffic.

It appears Beckham may have re-aggrivated the ankle today at practice. The article staes he hunched over in pain after taking a shot during practice? Pictures attatched look as if he is indeed in pain.

Posted by: Donkey King | August 14, 2007 5:42 PM | Report abuse

FFS man just sit out and rest it.
This media scrutiny is hard to handle. It it is as bad as Rooney's broken foot before the World Cup.
McClaren is going to be pissed if the LA marketing department pushes Beckham too hard and he ends up permanantly hurt.
Tendons can stay permanantly streached if not allowed to heal.

Posted by: jgildea8 | August 14, 2007 5:48 PM | Report abuse

Hmm Rangers just barely pulled that one off.

Luckily they subbed Novo in for Beasley who ended up getting the (very nice) game winning goal.

Hopefully this won't kill Beasleys chances of starting on the return leg.

Looks like Freddy made his Euro debut with Benfica in their UCL Qualifier against Copenhagen, coming in for an injured Luisão in the 56th minute. No mention of his play, so I guess he did alright. I'm sure we'll hear more tomorrow.

Posted by: Soy United! | August 14, 2007 6:49 PM | Report abuse

And freddy got a half+ in for Benfica, seems like that is going well, at least.

as for Burch travelling, I think that suspended players should travel with the team, i even would like to see them included on the roster, but ineligible to play, would increase the penalty for hooliganism on the pitch. Players who don't get carded often, and teams that discourage it, wouldn't be hurt.

OT: Anyone know if there is any chance EPL Review Show will be available in HD anytime soon? I know I'm getting greedy given that growing up only a couple of world cup games were on tv (and those with commercials), but, well, whatever.

Posted by: New England Guy | August 14, 2007 7:07 PM | Report abuse

The DCU-LA match is potentially a 120-minute affair, isn't it? Presumably that would affect a coach's decision concerning someone like Becks. If you put him in at the 70-minute mark, there is a chance that he will wind up having to play 50 minutes. If you think he can only go only 20 minutes and save him for the 100-minute mark, the match may end in regulation.

re: Carson relative to LA.

Umm, far be it from me to defend the LaLaGals, but Carson is 45 minutes MAX in heavy traffic on the 110 from downtown LA. It's less than 18 miles. I lived out there for 4 years and often went up to Santa Monica, Venice, and Hollywood to bar-hop and hang out with family-friends. The argument is moot anyway, since hardly anyone actually lives in Downtown LA. I'd be willing to bet the majority of LA's fans live West of the 5, while Chivas USA's fans live East of the 5.

Wow - 5 minutes into the game and De Rosario already has a goal. Impressive

Posted by: DE | August 14, 2007 10:14 PM | Report abuse

That was the strangest goal I have ever seen in MLS. De Ro must have the hand of god? How did he do that?

Posted by: Southeasterner | August 14, 2007 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Rosario just scored the goal of the tournament. Haha!

But I hope Pachuca catches up, because I think that if DCU wins tomorrow, we have to play AT Houston. Which means we have to try to play on the narrowest pitch on the planet again.

Posted by: rc | August 14, 2007 10:18 PM | Report abuse

This is proving to be an incredibly strange game already...

1-1

Posted by: Gburg | August 14, 2007 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Ianni red carded...so, Houston will play man down for the final 75

Posted by: DE | August 14, 2007 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Huh? It's still 1-0 Houston 23 minutes in...

Posted by: DE | August 14, 2007 10:30 PM | Report abuse

DeRo has got some of the most unorthodox moves on earth. How did he chip that ball to himself off his shin and head it right into the goal???

Posted by: Henchlow | August 14, 2007 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Now its 1-1 great set up by Pachuca

Posted by: Southeasterner | August 14, 2007 10:35 PM | Report abuse

OK - now it's 1-1...

Posted by: DE | August 14, 2007 10:35 PM | Report abuse

That red card was the end of Houston...they need a miracle to pull this one off.

Posted by: Southeasterner | August 14, 2007 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Whoa - Goldenballs is going to start tomorrow night...

Posted by: DE | August 14, 2007 10:40 PM | Report abuse

this is a brutal game. WEAK referee isn't going to help keep a lid on this thing.

On that tiny field I don't think Houston going down to 10 is going to hurt them very much. Pachuca doesn't have the space to really stretch them out and make them pay. And I think anyone who has watched futbol for very long has seen teams down to 10 win lots of games. Why, just the other night Dallas won with 10.

Posted by: Glenn | August 14, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse

The referee has had an excellent match imo...got all the important stuff right.

I cannot freeekin' believe the aweful PK's from Ching and Ngwenya!!!!

Posted by: T. Henry | August 15, 2007 12:53 AM | Report abuse

What a wonderful game for the SuperLiga and MLS! Packed house, pk's, and now a U.S.-Mexico championship.

Posted by: rc | August 15, 2007 12:54 AM | Report abuse

No excuse for Ching or Ngwenya misses. Ching already beat the keeper before he shot at the post and frankly, so did Ngwenya. Ugh. Better for Super Liga viewership in Mexico though.

Posted by: T. Henry | August 15, 2007 12:55 AM | Report abuse

Personally, Kinnear should've picked someone else to take those last 2 PKs. Ching and Ngwenya ran their asses off for 120 minutes and clearly were not mentally sharp... but I'm guessing the players probably asked to take the PKs... It does make for a better final.

VAMOS ARRIBA UNITED!

Why is everyone all over Martino's foul on Fred? Martino doesn't have a history of dirty play. It was poor judgement and there is no reason to retaliate unless it happens again. It's one thing when a thug like Franchino makes a tackle like that because he has a reputation. Franchino deserves retaliation, but not Martino. Kyle has never lived up to the hype, but he is a classy player with a high skill level. He doesn't need to play as physical because he has the talent.
