Days of Rest

I am taking a couple days off and will not rejoin you until Wednesday morning.

Plenty of good topics from over the weekend, so please skip on down to those threads and offer your thoughts.

I leave you with highlights from the wreckage of another Galaxy loss and a clip from Chivas USA's victory over the Club That Ellinger and Pastorino Ruined.

Congrats to my local team, Harrisburg City Islanders, for winning the USL-2 Championship Sat. Seems like the owners, staff and players are building a good organization there.

Since we're resting our starter till Wednesday, can we put Kpene in as guest Insider?

Posted by: Logan Circle | August 27, 2007 11:03 AM | Report abuse

My day was immediately ruined when I saw you wouldn't be here for a couple of long days. Even LA loss highlights couldn't cheer me up.

Posted by: sitruc | August 27, 2007 11:15 AM | Report abuse

Why couldn't we have had that keeper show up when we played LA for SuperLiga? There was some atrocious mistakes there.

Crap, this means I'll have to do work this week. On second thought, maybe I'll read up on Steinberg's sportsbog in preparation for the WWC coverage.

I was just watching the GOTW candidates and Mendes' sweet own goal. It it impossible to see the pitch lines over the football lines.

From RK: I was just watching the GOTW candidates and Mendes' sweet own goal.

That Scum own goal with Conway sleeping at the wheel has made my week. Most hilarious goal of the year to date. That it was the Scum makes it even sweeter! Not quite as good as Jaime burning Johnny Walker though.

The BBC's rumors column quote "various" sources as saying:

"LA Galaxy are lining up Jurgen Klinsmann as their new coach as Frank Yallop cannot handle the pressure of coaching David Beckham."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/gossip_and_transfers/6965168.stm

I'm not sure even Klinsi could untangle the mess that is the Galaxy. I hate to say this about my team, but they're no jewel, they're cubic zirconia.

Posted by: SportzNut21 | August 27, 2007 1:23 PM | Report abuse

What was a worse own goal -- Mendes, or the Paul Johnson whiff for England (I think that was the player)?

Posted by: RK | August 27, 2007 1:37 PM | Report abuse

I think you mean Robbo...

Posted by: Huey | August 27, 2007 1:56 PM | Report abuse

""My day was immediately ruined when I saw you wouldn't be here for a couple of long days. Even LA loss highlights couldn't cheer me up.""

Watch them again. And again. Again! It's beautiful.

The Mendes own goal is the greatest own goal I've seen ever. Combined with Shep's "What ... in the world?" call when watching the replay.

Couldn't happen to a better bunch.

Now see what we've gone and done? We have no Goff for a few days, and will be filled with spam and BS rumors.

Posted by: RK | August 27, 2007 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, before Beckham came, Yallop had the Galaxy running like a fine-tuned violin, if I may mix metaphors.

I guess the BBC editors have to give it a local angle, though.

And no one thinks Klinsmann is going to turn them around with the SAME ROSTER, do they?

I want to take a moment to gripe.

I was at the Jersey shore this weekend staying in a house without internet access -- not even wireless access from one of the neighbors. The place did have cable TV, but not FSC, so I could not watch the DC United-Toronto FC game.

I turned on ESPN and ESPN2 on Sunday to find out the result, and nothing -- no mention of the game on Sports Center and no MLS scores on the bottom line. SC did show highlights of the USWNT-Finland game (shown on ESPN2) on Saturday night' broadcast (according to my son, who stays up later than I do), but not on Sunday's shows.

I guess I should be grateful that ESPN will broadcast the Women's World Cup and has its Thursday night MLS games. Still, it would be nice for ESPN at least to throw a bone at other times to soccer fans in the US.

Ho,

I was at the Nascar race in Bristol this weekend. I was staying at a makeshift campground with a bunch of people and a couple of them had tv hookups in their RVs. They had ESPN News on after the race and the MLS game scores were running on the ticker. I had to look away when I saw that MLS was one of the categories.

I think MLS games get on the ticker, but you wont see a Sat game on the Sunday ticker.

Puerta along with the likes of Alves, Kanoute, Palop, and Navas was one of the reasons Sevilla had done so well the last 2 seasons winning 2 UEFA Cups, a Spanish Cup, Spanish Super Cup and a European Super Cup.

he would've been out of Sevilla in 1 or 2 years playing for the likes of Real, Chelski or Manure.

from an article on mlsnet.com

"Once he is officially added to the roster, FCD will have to make a roster move regarding a senior international player in order to create room for Denilson. The Hoops currently have four such players on their roster: midfielder Pablo Ricchetti, forward Carlos Ruiz, defensive midfielder Marcelo Saragosa and center back Serioux. Of the four, Saragosa and Serioux appear to be the top two candidates to be moved."

Hey, with Goff out of pocket, I thought I'd throw a (very) little bit of news your way -- United's Sept. 6 game vs. Chivas USA in L.A. has been pushed back a half-hour, to 10:30 pm ET.

http://web.mlsnet.com/news/team_news.jsp?ymd=20070828&content_id=114315&vkey=pr_dcu&fext=.jsp&team=t103

What does it mean for you? Well, you're sleeping a little less that night, I guess. And your Friday home-delivery Post will not have the result (game has to end before midnight to make the edition most of our subscribers get on their doorstep).

Of course, all of Steve's usual reports will be available here on the Web. So all is not lost.

Goff will be back soon; hang in there one more day!

Goff, and other posters.

How upset are you at Cal-Domingues for capping attendance at 12,500 for the SuperLiga final so that students won't have to worry about traffic. And the Galaxy will be missing 7 players who would have likely started. No Becks, Donovan, Xavier, Albright, Jazic or Gray. This is not the treatment that should be given to the FINAL of a major tournament. This is outrageous. DC United should be there to give Pachuca a contest/whooping, and it should be at RFK with 40,000 people. As it is, it'll be in a 27 K stadium with 12 K watching a Galaxy B team getting beaten up on.

Posted by: Andy | August 28, 2007 5:00 PM | Report abuse

I'm not a doctor so don't ask me to explain the scientific difference, but Puerta's death was the result of cardiomyopathy while Bias's was cardiac arrhythmia. The most obvious difference was that Bias's arrythmia was brought on by a drug overdose while Puerta's cardiomyopathy was genetic and with the amount of exercise he did on a regular basis there was a strong possibility that it was going to end his life at some point.

Are there confirmed reports that they will be sitting out the Superliga match? During the CO match, Donovan via phone made it sound like he definetely would be playing

Also something to ponder if Beckham isn't fit to play on Wednesday will McClaren still include him in England's lineup when it's annouced on Friday ?

Can someone please tell me if any of the soccer channels are broadcast in HD? I understand Fox Soccer Channel is not. I'm about to take the plunge with a new TV and wonder what kind of pix I would get.

Re: HD futbol

The only channels that I know of that broadcast soccer in HD are HDnet for the occasional DC game that no one can see, and ESPN2 on Thursdays and whenever Beckham is playing. FSC and GolTV are not in HD, but the picture isn't bad. FSC tends to have a better picture than GolTV. Anyone else know of any HD soccer channels?

That's asking a lot of a freshman, and a 16-year-old at that. I'd put more weight on the Andrulis factor. Whatever one might think of his performance with the Crew, he could do well at GMU if he has a few straight successful seasons on the recruiting front. Remember that this is the first year he's had a chance to get directly involved in recruiting.

Notice the :-)?

I know Fro Adu won't bring the team to a national title his freshman year but as a DC college soccer fan I think GM could take MD any day of the week. If only Howard had a good team again and the DC area could once again take over College soccer...not that last year was that bad.

Yeah, it looks like a Becks and Donovan will play in the final. That's good at least, but the Cal-State Dominguez thing is still just inexcusable.

from bbc soccer rumors

David Beckham went to the beach with pal Gordon Ramsey but could not go out surfing as he is not allowed to by LA Galaxy. (Daily Star)

So assumming this is true, LA will play him in back to back England and club games, leave him on the field when he is limping - but not let him surf on off days since he might get injured ?

has anyone else noticed the consistent inconsistency of the MLS rankings on this newspaper's website?

The team with the most points is frequently not listed as being the first placed team and today, the standings are said to be accurate as of July 23.

The guys on Fox Football Fone-in Show are calling Yallop's firing as of last night. Anyone have anything?

AEG, for whatever reason, had a huge crush on Lalas. But now it's evident that he's like Isiah Thomas without the personality. Or legal troubles. Yet.

no, even in this bad year for UMD (my prediction) compared to past years, not a chance. Could GMU win a game? sure. but any day of the week makes it seem like they would win all or even a vast majority.

Goff to the white courtesy phone. I've talked to my wife, enough already!

why would LA fire Yallop the day of the championship? That would be stupid in lalas proportions!

Posted by: JSF | August 29, 2007 7:53 AM | Report abuse

since most of the other rumors posted on the site have not been accurate and the Boswell/Carroll one has this disclaimer "It must be stressed that the source for this rumor is new to us and we are unable to judge their veracity" we should wait to hear from Goff about taking it seriously

Exactly. What they said was that Cobi Jones was supposed to be on the show last night, but was held after practice for a mandatory team meeting with LaLas the Clown. They interpreted that to mean that Yallop was done. Whether or not this is true I have no idea. Maybe they'll announce it tomorrow, regardless of the outcome.
