Match Comments Here
Ignore the previous post. Let's use this new one once the DCU-HOU match begins.
DCU's starting lineup is the same as the America game: Perkins, Gros, McTavish, Boswell, Burch, Olsen, Carroll, Gomez, Fred, Dyachenko, Emilio. Subs: Nolly, Mediate, J. Carroll, Namoff, Simms, Kpene, Moreno.

Goff,
Forgive me if you have already answered this, but what is your opinion of the Superliga Tournament? Good? Bad? Indifferent? Are you hoping that DCU advances?
I myself have loved the tournament so far and hope that DCU advances!
Posted by: Keenan | August 1, 2007 7:57 PM | Report abuse
Good tournament with a lot of potential. Here's hoping it continues to grow in future years.
Posted by: Goff | August 1, 2007 7:58 PM | Report abuse
Goff,
You said that the winning team, if MLS, only gets $150,000 to divide among the players. What happens to the other $850,000? It goes to the winning club? Or to MLS (if a MLS team wins)?
Posted by: Sean | August 1, 2007 8:00 PM | Report abuse
I am saying (optimistically) 2-1 DC Emilio and then Moreno late
Posted by: Predictions? | August 1, 2007 8:01 PM | Report abuse
Sean - it goes to MLS. Looks like Onstad is on a break. Maybe we can catch one from him like Morelia.
Posted by: JMR | August 1, 2007 8:02 PM | Report abuse
I meant to say catch a break from Wells like Morelia.

The Houston folks were expecting attendance of 10,000 or so tonight.
Posted by: Goff | August 1, 2007 8:14 PM | Report abuse
Nice first cross. Burch is a keeper.
Posted by: DC | August 1, 2007 8:15 PM | Report abuse
Yes, players on the championship team will split $150,000. The rest goes to the team/investors.
Here's the breakdown:
50K for making the semis
Another 50K for making the final
Another 50K for winning it all
150K total
Posted by: Goff | August 1, 2007 8:16 PM | Report abuse
Burch thumps a sweet long ball, doesn't he? When's the last time you saw that from a DCU outside back?
Posted by: Goff | August 1, 2007 8:18 PM | Report abuse
And then how will the players decide who gets the 150K? Split 18 ways? Seems unfair for Gomez to get the same as Burch considering the difference in salary.
And considering Emilio has missed more open shots in this tourney he should, perhaps, pay the team out of pocket.
Posted by: delantero | August 1, 2007 8:19 PM | Report abuse
Burch is putting in nice balls. Otherwise, play looks pretty sloppy. HOU's big free kick outside the PA went wild.
Fatigue setting in?

DCU fortunate Jaqua's foot of brick couldn't control Ching's hard pass.
Posted by: Goff | August 1, 2007 8:20 PM | Report abuse
The players will come up with their own formula to split the winnings. I am sure it will be weighted to benefit players who play the most minutes.
Posted by: Goff | August 1, 2007 8:22 PM | Report abuse
Goff i agree with you, Burch is great back there. When everyone is healthy again this should be our line up on the back line.
Namoff - Boswell - McTavish - Burch

Very nice long ball by Carroll, results in a CK.
Posted by: Goff | August 1, 2007 8:23 PM | Report abuse
Why did they build a new field so narrow? It looks too small for attractive soccer.
Posted by: DC | August 1, 2007 8:23 PM | Report abuse
Looked like Devon on a poor tackle attempt.

Just a thought. How much of this cautiousness is due to the fact that they just played a tight game against each other two weeks ago? I doubt familiarity breeds contempt, in this case.

Dyachenko hurt?
Posted by: Glenn | August 1, 2007 8:43 PM | Report abuse
It is unfair to criticize DCU for playing long ball at Estadio Robertson. The field is narrow and Houston is very tough to beat there.
Basically, they try to nick a goal and then choke the game off from there, which they can do on the narrow field.

Brian Carroll with his usual "hands off" defensive midfield approach as DeRo torches him thru midfield and leads to the Holden chance.
Kpene with a good move and Emilio unlucky

Either Telefutra has that place well miced or the Houston fans are seriously loud. They've been singing the whole game and I mean singing not just chanting. Not the mention the drumming talk about constant. I would love to see a game where each team could bring large numbers or supporters.

Had one really good opp and blew it. Not complaining. We maintained a good deal of possession. However, the guys are thinking they are playing America and have much time on the ball.
Posted by: JMR | August 1, 2007 8:58 PM | Report abuse
It will be interesting to track Holden. I guess he could play for either USA or Scotland internationally (has played for USA in youth internationals).
I think he would be a very smart player to go after for a European club, he wouldn't be too expensive and could yield big results.
However it works out, the kid is going places and I'd want him on my team.

Posted by: dtd | August 1, 2007 9:00 PM | Report abuse
I did not see Dyachenko hurt. Assuming I am correct, this is the second time Soehn has pulled Dyachenko in the first half because (presumably) he did not think he was playing well. I didn't see much of him, but he didn't seem poor to me, and did score in the last game. How do you bench the guy before the half break? That is a second slap in the face, and I would not be pleased if I was Rod.

Houston's edging it. We are not really using the wings at all. If Olsen and Fred aren't going to take some initiative, I'd at least like to see Gros or Burch make an overlapping run AND get the ball as a result. So far, I believe we had one Gros overlap, but the ball was pumped in early and nothing came of it. The field is thin as it is; lwe're not even using what little width it affords.

From what I could see on TV, Dyachenko did not look like his heart was in the game. He wasn't hustling, and he gave the ball away easily a few times.

If the best chance of the game comes from a DEFENDER missing an open shot, I blame the coach. And his substitutions haven't exactly been confidence inspiring. Why bring in midfielder in a game you have to win when you have at least one striker on the bench?

I agree with Goff. DCU was outplayed tonight, but each team created one clear scoring chance. The winning side put away its chance.
If you said going in that DCU would get a tie from this game, that would have been a great result. It is clear that that DCU clearly misses Jaime. It is no accident that the team looked much more dangerous once he came on. Hopefully he is on the way to a full recovery.
And, hopefully, America pulls at least a point so DCU can advance.

too much time left in the season to throw in the towel. after the opening couple of games, soehn's done a good job with this team. not great though. houston's clearly the better side.
it would've been nice though to bring in a striker, though that assumes that after emilio/moreno/dychenko/kpene we have another striker to bring in.
Posted by: dco | August 1, 2007 10:03 PM | Report abuse
Ummmm... the only subs not used were mediate & J. Carrol. Where are these mystery offensive subs all the coach haters are talking about?
This game is on the players. They didn't make the play on the long ball that led to the houston goal, and they didn't finish their chances at the other end.

Addlery 1 goal this season. All the subs combined, how many goals? So yeah I'll say bring a FORWARD him. What's the worst? You lose by 2 and you are still stuck on 4 points and still need Morelia to win or tie.
I know Soehn isn't playing but I can't help but blame him for the consistent level of poor play, especially on the road.

Repeat after me: Houston is the best team in MLS. DCU is not. Why are you surprised by a 1-0 Dynamo victory in Houston? Until DCU acquires another player or two, nothing will change. Soehn's tactics have nothing to do with it. DCU created a couple good chances and didn't finish any of them. This has been the problem for weeks now.

Ok, so we don't like the substitutions? What are the alternatives to what was done? Addlery? Mira Mupier (who?)? I know you guys are pissed about the lack of offense but who do you put on? Did Soehn have a real sub choice? Everyone was fatigued to hell and several of our player, a number of whom admitted to being in funks ("Brian" Boswell *Cough*), just play like crap? Maybe there is some coaching that needs to be done but Carroll has played like crap all year. Find some more talent with those Freddy bucks and maybe we have a chance...

Does anyone recall the details of how Houston/San Jose got Ching?
My hazy recollection is that, back in the Hudson Era, we traded some kind of draft choice (gawd knows what kind) to San Jose for some scrawny, stringy haired midfielder who hung around for a season or two and never did anything. San Jose picked up Ching with the choice -- from where I don't know. But I am quite sure that we traded a choice to San Jose that they used to get Ching and we got nothing of value.
Every time I see Ching play, and get mad at Hudson and his wonderful personnel choices all over again.

We missed two good opp.s with boswells wiff, which is understandable he is a defender, but damn! All he had to do was tap it in. Make contact! And Kpenes shot which hit a defender unluckly. O well It happens. We lost fair and square, but man moreno really brought the knife to their throats for the rest of the period he was playing! If he was in from the beginning....

The only even remotely attacking player we had on the bench when Simms came on was Mediate. He can only play wide, and I don't think he would have been an upgrade on anyone we had out there at the time. Everyone that has called for another forward to be sent on should go outside and do push-ups until they become literate.
DC was poor tonight. Houston was poor tonight. Sadly, Houston was slightly less poor. This was a bad game from both sides. They finished their one great chance, while Eddie Robinson blocked both of ours.
Also, can we clone Moreno? It's clear that we are much, much better with him than without him. The 2 minutes between his entry into the game and when Robinson floored him (and inexplicably got off with no card, no foul, or even a talking to) were our best 2 minutes. Where goes Moreno, goes DC United.

Houston had few chances scored on one. We had few chances, including the easiest sitter imaginable and missed. Yeah, that's Soehn's fault.

I agree with Goffer on this one. It is not Soehn's fault we can't finish. If we finish half of our "how did we miss that" chances, the Soehn talk is non-existent. While our forwards have struggled, I'm putting this on the midfield. Their play this year has been substandard.

I don't grade coaches on what they do when they are winning matches, I grade them when they are losing matches and the team has to make adjustments. The best coaches (Wenger, SAF, Mourinho, Rijkaard, Capello) can make good tactical adjustments when needed. In my opinion it took Soehn 20 minutes to switch from a 442 to the 352 that he wanted on the field. He didn't look confident o sure of what he wanted to do. Soehn may be a good coach, but not a championship coach. I may be wrong it is just my opinion.

If we had finished, the score lines would have been DCU 2 Morelia 1, DCU 5 America 0, DCU 1 Houston 1.
I grade coaches and teams on chances created and results.
In the first two matches, DCU created dozens (and without arguably their best player). The Houston match was a physical match with few chances by either team.

I'm not surprised at the result, but its not like DC didn't have their chances to win or tie this match.
Soehn's faith in Gros is really hurting the team. Gros's decisions and passing out of the back are horrible. Granted he is playing out of position, but his lack of technical ability makes him look out of position no matter where he plays.
Subbing Burch off was a mistake; he was the only player consistently stretching Houston's defense with his long passes that actually found DC's forwards.
Looking good thanks to America.
