Matchday 19: DCU at Columbus

[UPDATED!]

Greetings from Estadio Crew.

Big crowd expected tonight, maybe 20,000-plus. If you are planning to watch on Comcast SportsNet, change the channel -- the game will be on CN8 (available on most Comcast cable outlets) and HDNet. Tony Limarzi and THE Thomas Rongen will handle the CN8 commentating. Dave Johnson took the weekend off. Frank Hanrahan on the radio play-by-play.

Big changes to the DCU lineup, as well. With a heavy schedule, Tom Soehn is looking to manage minutes and give players a break before the stretch run this fall.

Boswell is out, Vanney is in
Olsen is out, Gros remains in
Carroll is out, Simms is in

So here is your XI:

Perkins; Namoff, McTavish, Vanney, Burch; Fred, Simms, Gomez, Gros; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Nolly, Mediate, Kpene, Carroll, Olsen, Boswell, Dyachenko. (Moose is a scratch.) ***THIS HAS CHANGED: Olsen has been scratched from the active roster, Moose has been added. Olsen has had bone spur issues in an ankle and needed to take the night off.

As usual, this is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts. Please share!

I'll create a new forum late tonight with some comments, player ratings and bonus quotes.

Glad to see Simms back in. Olsen has been looking tired lately, so I can see the rationale behind resting him. Boswell, not as much.

Any word on the Columbus lineup? I'm guessing it's the same as in the past few games, but you never know.

Dear Goff,

Any reason why we haven't seen Moose lately? Has been been injuried or just out of form? Thanks

Posted by: Murr | August 18, 2007 6:48 PM | Report abuse

Moose played Wednesday, didn't he? Came on as a late sub. Didn't really look any better than anyone else, but then again, he didn't look any worse.

Posted by: Mastodon Juan | August 18, 2007 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Goff - Is Soehn feeling pressure to get Vanney on the field, given the fact that he got rid of Facundo for him and Greg is making too much money to sit on the bench? Or does he really think he is one of the team's top defenders?

Posted by: Call me skeptical | August 18, 2007 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Maybe it's Soehn's way of putting his stamp on the team. In tonight's lineup, only Perkins, Namoff, Gomez, Gros, and Moreno were regular starters last year.

A CN8 question - Is that august station provided on DirecTV?

GO DCU!

Posted by: DirecTV? | August 18, 2007 6:57 PM | Report abuse

I predict a 2-2 tie. goals from Emilio and Jaime (109th goal) and from columbus crew, Schelotto and Heyduk

Posted by: luis | August 18, 2007 7:01 PM | Report abuse

Sadly, I think DC is going to win this one, and win big. Olsen, who I hate but respect, has been holding this team back since his hat trick. Rid of him, Gomez, Fred, and Moreno will connect. Emilio, Gomez, and Fred will get goals, and DC will get a fourth from someone who isn't Moreno. But they'll be exposed defensively on the wings. I never make predictions, but my gut says 4-2 to DC, and the crowd will dwindle to 4000 by the 80th minute.

Posted by: Mastodon Juan | August 18, 2007 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Trust me Moreno will gwt a goal in today

Posted by: luis | August 18, 2007 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Murr- Moose had a sports hernia, forcing him to be out for 4 weeks while he got surgery in Germany.

Posted by: Garret | August 18, 2007 7:14 PM | Report abuse

DCU has made a last-minute roster change: Olsen is not in uniform and has been replaced by Moose on the bench. I will try to find out what is going on...

Posted by: Goff | August 18, 2007 7:20 PM | Report abuse

I actually like this lineup. Kind of glad to see Olsen sit. Maybe some time on the pine will reinvigorate him.

Posted by: Terp | August 18, 2007 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Olsen = bone spurs, day to day.

Posted by: Goff | August 18, 2007 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Arch rival?

Posted by: -K | August 18, 2007 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Living in Philly, I'm stuck watching the game on MLSTV and I have the LA/NY game on FSC in the background... did anyone catch Max Bretos reading that MLS Fantasy team name half way through before realizing what he was saying?

Posted by: MK | August 18, 2007 7:32 PM | Report abuse

So, this game apparently isn't playing on CN8 here in PA. Instead I get minor league baseball. You have got to be kidding me...

Posted by: Gburg | August 18, 2007 7:35 PM | Report abuse

CN8 is playing minor league baseball on the feed on its webesite. Can't find the game anywhere on RCN/Starpower in the District. Grrr.

Posted by: Mark | August 18, 2007 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Simms... Arghh

Posted by: morphit | August 18, 2007 7:41 PM | Report abuse

In the other game - Angel with the early goal under the wall on a free kick and Beckham assisted on a Pavon goal from a corner kick.

Posted by: MK | August 18, 2007 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Is Soehn feeling pressure to get Vanney on the field, given the fact that he got rid of Facundo for him and Greg is making too much money to sit on the bench? Or does he really think he is one of the team's top defenders?

-------

The only team that has pressure to play someone is L.A. -- Beckham.

As I said in the original post, Soehn needs to give guys a break and manage minutes before the stretch. Today it is Boswell. When the schedule thins out, Vanney is probably not a starter.

Posted by: Goff | August 18, 2007 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Columbus forgot their swim suits.

Posted by: morphit | August 18, 2007 7:44 PM | Report abuse

NY - LA game is already tied 1-1

Angel's ball went under the jumping wall . . . then Beckham to Pavon on a free kick on the other side

Posted by: emanon | August 18, 2007 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted too soon - in the first 8 minutes Beckham has 2 assists and Pavon has 2 goals.

Posted by: MK | August 18, 2007 7:45 PM | Report abuse

now it's 2-1 LA; Beckham to Pavon again on a set piece

(liking the double viewing of a game on tv and a game on the web)

Posted by: emanon | August 18, 2007 7:47 PM | Report abuse

I have a subscription to Direct Kick and use Direct TV. The program guide lists the game on 786. I tune in: No game. Direct TV states that it is "blacked out by the broadcaster." In other words, Comcast Sports Net (Channel 629 on my TV) wants us to watch the Redskins pre-season game and has the authority to block Direct Kick from showing the game here -- at least according to Direct TV.

So what's the point of paying for Direct Kick? I'm not renewing.

Gros took a blow to the head, removed for precautionary reasons

Posted by: Goff | August 18, 2007 7:51 PM | Report abuse

I've been happy with MLSTV this season - they've ironed out the glitches from last year and between that, FSC, Telefutura, and ESPN2, I can usually catch all but one game a week.

Posted by: MK | August 18, 2007 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Wow. I didn't know Mctavish was a rookie. :P
HDNet has awful commentary,

Posted by: Garret | August 18, 2007 7:54 PM | Report abuse

plenty of possession, but lack of speed up top or aggressive wing play keeping things bottled up.

Posted by: morphit | August 18, 2007 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Better ball from Moreno on that breakout and we've got a goal... he's slipping a bit

Posted by: RB | August 18, 2007 8:02 PM | Report abuse

It looks like the MLS grass-mowing policy has gone by the wayside.

Posted by: MK | August 18, 2007 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Columbus commentators are really whining about Fred rolling on the ground after the foul...

Posted by: MK | August 18, 2007 8:10 PM | Report abuse

It never did make sense with so many teams playing on Beckham-proof turf.

Posted by: Max | August 18, 2007 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Since we've heard from at least a couple of people from Pennsylvania this evening, I'm curious as to what sort of ratings MLS broadcasts on ESPN2, FSC, HDNet, DK, etc. have been getting in media markets that do not have MLS franchises; in particular, whether people are watching in MLS wannabe markets such as St. Louis, Philadelphia, Portland, etc.

Posted by: Go Penn State! | August 18, 2007 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Here in Richmond, VA I'm getting minor league baseball too - argh!

Posted by: Mary | August 18, 2007 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Columbus commentators "like candy from a baby" Ooooh I want DC to score on these guys

Posted by: -K | August 18, 2007 8:17 PM | Report abuse

This half has actually been about as attractive as football can be in a 0-0 game. Now if only we could generate anything in the final third.

Golazo Mathis!

Posted by: MK | August 18, 2007 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Garret | August 18, 2007 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Will Kpene come in? We need speed...

Posted by: -K | August 18, 2007 8:35 PM | Report abuse

"I actually like this lineup. Kind of glad to see Olsen sit. Maybe some time on the pine will reinvigorate him."

I like Boswell sitting, too. He's been spending so much time admiring the photos on his own website . . . maybe now he'll have time to think about all those easy shots he's missed over the past few games.

Posted by: UVA to RFK | August 18, 2007 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Goff - Any idea if the plan is for Gomez to play the entire game, or was he only slotted to play a half, 60 mins, etc ?

Posted by: emanon | August 18, 2007 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Olsen is sitting because of bone spurs in his ankle. He's not even on the active roster. Best for him to not push it to the point of making him useless the rest of the season.

Simms had a great match. 7 for him, too.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 18, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Caretaker's outlook on Rongen, but he was spot on about Perkins being active and focused with the ball in the air tonight. Safe to say the Brazilians (and even Simms to a degree) silenced the critics tonight?

Posted by: Terps_United | August 18, 2007 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Good to see Fred effective on the right flank. Hope he stays there and off the left. Simms great match except for the ticky tacky foul at the top of the box. Simms was the reason DCU was able to keep possession as opposed to the LA match.

Namoff excellent defending; Perkins gritty performance.

Left flank didn't try to do too much, and Gomez found his groove to some extent. Moreno good though he might want to switch with Gomez (Gomez up top) because he lags for a striker. Love him, but the wheels are more appropriate for a CMF at this stage. Emilio and Fred definite sync tonight.

Fred MOTM

Posted by: morphit | August 18, 2007 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Not the smoothest win, but three points! Fred was great. I hope Olsen isn't seriously hurting. Gros too.

Anybody else flip to the redskins game at the half just in time to see Jason Campbell go down?

Posted by: stairs | August 18, 2007 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Glad to see that Perkins stayed in the game, but it definitely looked like his back was in pain - with the offensive show NY had tonight it would be bad to loose him for Wednesday's match.
