Matchday 21: DCU at TFC

Greetings from Estadio BMO, which tonight is a little futbol oasis surrounded by the Canadian National Exhibition (The Ex), an 128-year-old summer fair on the banks of Lake Ontario. Ferris wheel? Pharoah's Fury? Human Cannonball? Tiny Tom Donuts? You've got it.

As Insider loyalists, you already know United will be without Luciano Emilio, Ben Olsen and Josh Gros. You also know that Rod Dyachenko was allowed into the country after being banned in May. (Whether he gets back into the States is another matter.)

Toronto is hurting...and losing...and not scoring...and desperate for points, which could make for an interesting evening for a pair of clubs headed in opposite directions.

Game preview here.

DCU LINEUP:
Perkins; Namoff, McTavish, Vanney, Burch; Carroll (right), Simms (defensive), Gomez, Fred (left); Dyachenko, Addlery. Subs: Moreno, Boswell, Kpene, Moose, Mediate, J. Carroll, Nolly.

Moreno gets a break, but is available for second-half duty.

You know the drill: pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts here. I will rejoin you again very late tonight with perfect player ratings, pithy bonus quotes and shallow analysis.

Can you give us any hints on the trade rumor you threw in to today's preview article?

Will the game be broadcast on any of the comcast networks or only FSC & FSE?

Posted by: Rus | August 25, 2007 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Fox Soccer Channel

No specifics on the trade rumors

Posted by: Goff | August 25, 2007 5:58 PM | Report abuse

i would guess boswell is on the trade block? he's too talented to sit on the bench for good.

Posted by: pat | August 25, 2007 6:45 PM | Report abuse

Carroll on the wing? That should be interesting.

Posted by: Mike | August 25, 2007 6:47 PM | Report abuse

So how, exactly, do we plan on scoring tonight? I guess it's hoping Gomez puts away a freekick?

Seriously, Addlery? Come on.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 25, 2007 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Gomez or Fred can bank one in off of Addlery or the human changeup.

Posted by: dtd | August 25, 2007 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Are we hoping that Toronto can find out a way to get into the negative goal column?

"Your final from BMO Field, DC 0, Toronto -2."

Posted by: Robert | August 25, 2007 7:01 PM | Report abuse

I sincerely hope Boswell isn't on the trading block. So the man had a couple of bad games, he's the league's defender of the year!

Posted by: Bart | August 25, 2007 7:01 PM | Report abuse

Woohoo! Pithy bonus quotes and shallow analysis! ;-) Anyway, seriously, why isn't Boz playing? Has he been that bad in practice? I don't like Carroll on the right. Without Ben and Luci I really feel they should be focusing on defense and put Bobby in with Vanney and McTavish and Burch. I like Simms though, he is good at holding the ball and possession. Vamos United!

Posted by: T. Henry | August 25, 2007 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Addlery can not even make the 18 man roster for recent gamedays yet he starts tonight. I guess that DCU views him as the best striker option for Emilio while Kpene and Dyachenko are viewed as the withdrawn forward depth options for Moreno.

Posted by: Eric Z | August 25, 2007 7:06 PM | Report abuse

He was last year, he's been far from consistent this year. I still say he's better than McTavish, but since he didn't re-sign when the club offered him upwards of 100k, DC may be thinking about the future. A future that might not include neither Boswell nor Vanney, as well as Gomez.

I am extremely baffled about starting Addlery up top. I would have expected Kpene next to Rod. I'm also shocked at Carroll on the wing, I don't remember him looking particularly impressive out there on the rare occasions he's played outside. On the plus side of things, we've got the best bench we've had all year.

Posted by: AlecW81 | August 25, 2007 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Kpene coughs up the ball too easily to be a true withdrawn-forward.

T.Henry, Namoff has been the most consistent defender we've had all year, you'd bench him to stick Bobby at RB? Or put McTavish at RB? Not a very good idea. The only way we see all 3 CBs out there at once, is if we use a 5-4-1 or 5-3-2

Posted by: AlecW81 | August 25, 2007 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Where the heck has DeRoux been? He is so fast. We desperately need speed.

Posted by: Garret | August 25, 2007 7:10 PM | Report abuse

Without Emilio, United wants a target forward on the field. Addlery, for all his limitations, is one; Kpene is not.

Posted by: Goff | August 25, 2007 7:12 PM | Report abuse

As someone who makes it a daily routine to bash on Brian Carroll, I'm actually interested in seeing what he can do on the outside of midfield. He has the pace, stamina and ability to hit a cross and his lack of physical play won't be as detrimental out on the outside. Let's see how this shakes out. This could actually work.

As for the rest of the lineup, it's pretty clear that this is a golden opportunity for some aging players to get some much needed rest. TFC is playing terrible soccer now and tweaking the lineup probably won't hurt the team as much as it would if we were playing the Revs or FC Dallas.

Who knows how this will work.

Posted by: A Rickey | August 25, 2007 7:13 PM | Report abuse

What good is speed if you can't do anything with the ball?

I think it was actually Addlery with the flick-on assist from a Perkins long ball. Route one football.

Max Bretos knows very little about DC.

Posted by: Andrew | August 25, 2007 8:15 PM | Report abuse

yay Fred.

This referee is pathetic. He must be used to hockey games or something.

I wish Troy would stop kicking the ball to the other goalie. Let's work it out from the back and hold the ball instead of all this longball crap.

Posted by: adam | August 25, 2007 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Dyachenko is an idiot. He commits the most unsubtle, ridiculous fouls.

Posted by: Glenn | August 25, 2007 8:22 PM | Report abuse

On the long balls from Perkins, didn't DC score a goal in the last match off a long ball from Perkins?

Posted by: Bart | August 25, 2007 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Andrew noted:

"Max Bretos knows very little about DC."

From what I can detect, Max Betos knows very little about soccer or anything else. He is a terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

Go DCU-

Posted by: steve | August 25, 2007 8:42 PM | Report abuse

OK, a long ball last game and a long ball this game led to the opening goals. Since then it's just been giving possession back to TFC. We've got the lead so let's hang onto the ball instead of just handing it back to the other team.

Posted by: Glenn | August 25, 2007 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Bretos usually is at least familiar with the news concerning each MLS team. For a national broadcast on the top all-soccer channel in the country, he knows incredibly little about one of MLS's top sides. For example:

- Namoff is just filling in at right back and has not been first choice whenever healthy.
- Tonight's back four is patchwork, even though it is unchanged in 3 straight matches.
- Toronto has been inches away from scoring all half long, despite the fact that they have only created half-chances that we cleared every time.

Can I just send in a tape of me talking during a game? I have a suit. I, and many others, have got to be light years better than Bretos.

On the game: I guess I have to eat a little crow since Addlery was involved in our goal, but the rest of the half was us looking awful on offense. The defense looks assured, though, considering the amount of possession Toronto has had and the giveaways in midfield. Gomez and Dyachenko are essentially not even on the field. Thankfully, Toronto does not know how to pass the ball or run into space properly. Still, I doubt we can survive another half with that level of midfield play. We're letting ourselves be put under too much pressure and eventually, even Toronto will earn what I'm sure will be a disgustingly ugly goal. Our midfield and forwards have got to hold the ball some and give our defenders and Perkins a break.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 25, 2007 8:45 PM | Report abuse

My main problem with the ref is his inconsistency. Either allow the physical play or don't, but how can you allow the physical play by one side (TFC) but not the other (DC)? 13-6 seems pretty lopsided for this game

Posted by: Inconsistent | August 25, 2007 8:45 PM | Report abuse

United needs another target striker. We can't depend on Emilio for everything. Moreno is old, Addlery is a joke, and Kpene should never wear a United jersey again. Perhaps they should have bought Martin Palermo when they had the chance.

Ugly, but 3 points. The brightest part was Perkins playing with confidence and skill, probably his best game of the year. The worst part was the ref, totally inconsistent. Based on the crowd noise and streamer, looks like nice atmosophere in Toronto. I went to a game there once ten years ago or so, and my favorite part was the neverending singsong chants from the back of the bleacher:

"We want a goal"

"We want a goal"

Over... and... over...

FIRE SOEHN !!!!!!

Why trade Boswell? He is the best natural defender we have. He is a fan favourite and he's got a lot of potential.

Why did he start Carroll over Simms in the SuperLiga vs. LA? Carroll is having a bad year and Simms has done so well this year.

Why does he play two guys that are essentially the same player (Fred and Gomez both have the same natural position)?

Why did he ever start Gros in defense? He's a midfielder. He's never done well when he's a defender, unless it's a hybrid position like the one used in a 3-5-2 setup.

FIRE SOEHN!!!

DC United deserve better! He inherits a team that Nowak built and he is slowly tearing it apart.

Yes, Soehn needs to be replaced. He is out of his depth.

Why didn't they just re-sign Gomez? Because he's playing out his contract, he's not even showing up to games.

Posted by: London Calling | August 25, 2007 10:15 PM | Report abuse

hey Bristol, I think you are about 6 or 8 weeks too late complaining about Soehn. He's got the team poised to be in first place. 1 goal against in 5 league matches. Building a bit of depth here and there.

Posted by: Glenn | August 25, 2007 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Woo-hoo! We won. AND UGLY.

Someone call Kevin Payne and tell him to find a new coach because I definitely agree with Bristol.

FIRE THE COACH>>>>>>

Posted by: Port-A-Pottee | August 25, 2007 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Bristol, I'm guessing your last name is actually Lalas seeing as you want to fire a coach who has one of the best records in the league plus games in hand. Getting rid of Sigi has done wonders for LA!

Posted by: Is Your Name Alexi? | August 25, 2007 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Hey Glenn,

Soehn is getting worse and worse. The whole Boswell-on-the-bench thing is just another symptom of awful coaching.

Posted by: Tom Soehn | August 25, 2007 10:20 PM | Report abuse

I would agree with Bristol's analysis but this is Soehn's first season.

I mean, this isn't the EPL. If Clavijo can hang on in Colorado, we could at least give Soehn a fair shot. I mean, every coach can make a boneheaded move or two (or three).

Posted by: London Calling | August 25, 2007 10:15 PM

______________________________________

You make it sound as if resigning a player is some sort of unilateral action. My understanding is that Gomez chose to play out his contract for reasons of his own (e.g., to pursue opportunities abroad).

Posted by: Section 410 | August 25, 2007 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Tom, you are fired.
Pack your bags. Alexi Lalas will be the new coach.

Posted by: Kevin Payne | August 25, 2007 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Perhaps Tom Soehn could just have a conference in a London hotel room with Sunil Gulati and Fabio Capello about the technical aspect of the game.

That would do wonders for his confidence.

Posted by: Mr Monk | August 25, 2007 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully just a jammed big toe for Abby.

Posted by: sitruc | August 25, 2007 10:28 PM | Report abuse

So, let's look at Soehn's record this year.

* Failed in the CONCACAF Champions Cup (though I blame that one on Troy Perkins choking yet again)

* Started Carroll, who has been abysmal, in place of Clyde Simms. Simms is much better in his positioning and winning 50-50 balls

* He continued to put Gros into defense even though he's never done well in that position. He's a much better midfielder.

* Traded Erpen for a wobbly-kneed, has-been (Vanney? seriousy?)

* Now looking to trade Boswell?

* Unimaginative formations. How long do we have to watch the 4-4-2.

Posted by: London Calling | August 25, 2007 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Fire Soehn? Are you kidding me. The worst he did this match was start Carroll on the flank. I don't know what the deal is with Boswell but adding him wouldn't have changed the defense, which performed fairly well. Boz should be back on soon, I agree, but as it stands I fail to see what he did that should result in us axing him... Second best record in the league?

Posted by: Gburg | August 25, 2007 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Troy Perkins was the reason we lost to Chivas in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Him and him alone. That bonehead is always letting goals in during crunch time. Remember that lame attempt during Beckham's goal in the SuperLiga? That was the worst goalkeeping I've seen since Arconada in the 1984 European Cup final.

Posted by: Madrid | August 25, 2007 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Gburg, you are dead on. We've got one of the best records in the game, and we just won -another- game on the road after being awful before.

Posted by: RK | August 25, 2007 10:36 PM | Report abuse

If you're happy with being second in this mickeymouse league, then by all means let him stay. But when it comes to international competition, this team will never make it with this coach.

Posted by: Bristol | August 25, 2007 10:38 PM | Report abuse

The only reason United is doing well this season is because they are superior in talent compared to the opponents.

Posted by: Garret | August 25, 2007 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Tom Soehn and Bob Bradley can take a fishing trip together. They're both the same calibre of coach. Hopelessly out of depth.

Posted by: Mr Monk | August 25, 2007 10:39 PM | Report abuse

According to Heather Mitts, Abby came over to the sideline after her injury and said she thought her toe was broken.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 25, 2007 10:41 PM | Report abuse

You guys really need to chill out. Mickeymouse? Where are we, EPL? We've got limited depth, salary and options. Some players have failed to step up at key times (ie Perkins for CONCACAF), but what are you talking about? Internationally we did fine up until the metldown against LA (Who knows what the deal was with that, but at least we're well on our way to qualifying next year, can't say that for our LA rivals :P). We have Chivas coming up, which we did alright with while our team was struggling (both cohesively and individually). Right now our individual struggles are mainly limited to one Gomito (what the hell happened...). We're doing just fine, well on route to the playoffs, Superliga and possibly the supporters shield or cup. Chill out, grab a beer, and realize that we aren't Man U (oh yeah, thats going so well for them right now too...).

Goff reported in the Post today that DCU is looking to trade for an attacking player. That, plus the benching of Boswell for the last 3 matches, has led to the speculation.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 25, 2007 10:53 PM | Report abuse

The WNT match at HDC is on an 80-yard-wide pitch (specially widened from the 75 that LAG and Chivas use). Apparently at least one venue in China will be an 82-yard affair.

Funny to read a couple of people saying fire the coach, when just the other day i realized Soehn has a decent chance to become the fourth United coach (out of five) to win MLS Cup in his first season.

But since Arena was the only one to win more than once, we should probably fire Soehn as soon as he guides us to the Cup, so we can have a new rookie coach lead us to our 6th cup. ;)

Posted by: argo0 | August 25, 2007 11:03 PM | Report abuse

I think that DC United is the crown jewel of MLS.

Now if we could actually sign a big-name talent, maybe that would help hide the fact that Soehn is in over his head.

Kai came in as a late sub; for once the ESPN2 crew managed not to dwell on the fact that she is a Hawai'ian. But this raises a question: If anything happens to the Wombat, Kai is the natural backup as a target striker. However, they keep bringing her in as a late sub. What if she were called on to go 90 minutes on the WWC stage?

Soehn is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!! time to get a better coach, Capello we need you.!!!!

Posted by: Yerko | August 25, 2007 11:20 PM | Report abuse

Haven't you heard? Capello is taking over the USNats. Which means Bradley should soon be available.....

Posted by: Anonymous | August 25, 2007 11:23 PM | Report abuse

well, while your at it you also need to fire Dave Kasper who is the one mainly responsible for putting this roster together. And you might as well fire Kevin Payne as well. And certainly you need to axe those lousy no-good owners while you are in a cutting mood. And how about getting rid of that useless Brian Namoff. He never scores any goals. Let's have a team left that is just Bobby Boswell and Clyde Simms. And I suppose Emilio can stay, even though he misses so many easy goals and should have 50 for the year by now. And that Fred gives the ball away a lot. And Ben Olsen is always hurt.

I am going to have to conclude that you people are either idiots or trolls.

Posted by: Glenn | August 25, 2007 11:25 PM | Report abuse

So yes... Carroll on the wing. I'm intrigued.

For this thread: At various times this year, we've played a 3-5-2, 4-4-2, 4-3-3, and 3-4-3.

At least Soehn hasn't played a 3-6-1. We have three points, we have a good shot at the SS, and we have a somewhat rested Jaime Moreno.

These calls for firing Soehn are ridiculous. It's like firing Capello after the man wins La Liga. What do you want, the coach to play all the fan favorites and have beautiful attacking football, or do you want results? United is in 2nd, with games in hand, and hasn't even gotten a DP yet. I would love a DP, and one that fits our needs, but really, leave Soehn alone for now. Only if we don't either get supporter's sheild or an appearance in the MLS cup finals would I consider replacing him with someone else really special.

Lack of results is precisely why Capello was fired. Yes, they won La Liga. But they didn't win Champions League, and for certain clubs, their standards and goals exceed winning their national league.

I'd like to put in a good word for Lori Walker, the Ohio State coach who shared the booth with Dellacamera and Mitts. She did a good job of explaining basics that we often take for granted (e.g., how players position themselves, or how a shooter got her hips in the right position to take an effective shot).

Hmmmm, let's see, United is 12-3-2 in league play since its poor start to the season. Yup, the coach has got to go. (sigh)

Man, some of the comments here are ridiculous. The fire Soehn shyte is typical message board tripe and gripe, and should be ignored as such, but the get rid of Perkins comment deserves special recognition as quite possibly the STUPIDEST THING EVER SAID ON THE INTERNET. EVER. *golf clap*

Did you watch this game? Even a little? Perkins was dominant from start to finish. We got three points because of Perkins, it's that simple. He's been great all season long. He's a force in the box, rushing out claiming through balls, crosses, making amazing reflex saves, anything you could ask from a goalie, he does it. He made one mistake on the Beckham goal. So what? Are you serious? Get rid of one of the best goalies in the league because he made one mistake?

Jesus, why am I even bothering to respond...that's just so dumb.

ONE PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE FIRE SOEHN POSTINGS. THE IP ADDRESS IS THE SAME ON ALL OF EM.

WHOEVER YOU ARE, PLEASE STOP. WE'VE GOT A NICE THING GOING HERE. THE LAST THING I WANT TO DO IS SHUT DOWN THE COMMENTS SECTION.

THANKS

winning does mean crap Goff, we need to play good, need some credibility out side our league, Soehn is not the man, maybe we need some international coach that can put us on the map. you gotta know tha dc united is not just a dc area team, its international my family follows from South America. when they lose they know why...when the play bad they know why. Soehn must be a great person dont know him, but this team and any team is this league needs to get the best for their team. Soehn is not!!!!

Thanks Goff. We all appreciate the comments section without the BS. Anyways, I would like to see Kai finish better. I like her though.

Finally got to the end of the Harrisburg-Richmond USL2 match on FSC. Why do I feel like I've seen Richmond lose on PKs a million times? Harrisburg City Islanders and Richmond Kickers... I know I've seen those teams play this year. I just can't remember the games....

Glad to find out the "Fire Soehn" posts were all from the same place. They seemed to all display the same level of immaturity.

Wondered for a moment whether, when Goff's out of the country, the lunatics get to run the asylum.

Posted by: garbaggio | August 26, 2007 1:53 AM | Report abuse

It's quite obvious the "Fire Soehn" posts are the work of trolls, probably RBNY fans who'd rather have Soehn than Il Bruce.

Posted by: AlecW81 | August 26, 2007 1:55 AM | Report abuse

I wonder if that's the same poster who claimed that Fred and Emilio are the worst Brazilian soccer players ever.

Goff, can't you block individual IP addresses from commenting?

Posted by: AlecW81 | August 26, 2007 3:01 AM | Report abuse

A way to start is by requiring people to register before posting comments. That way we know the regular posts from the trolls. And it puts an extra burden on the morons who just want to type "fire soehn"

Posted by: Bart | August 26, 2007 11:32 AM | Report abuse

Alright, so the "fire Soehn" stuff was all from the same guy. Grow up already, "Bristol".

Criticism is fair, but fire a first-year coach with an pretty damn good record? C'mon? Fortunately, even most of the toughest critics on on this blog knows that is nuts.

(And Goff, requiring registration would be fine by me. It won't guarantee anything, of course, but it will reduce the likelihood of more "Bristols" showing up down the line).
