Off to L.A.

I will be traveling much of the day and won't be able to rejoin you until late this afternoon from Los Angeles following United's training session at Home Depot Center.

In the meantime.....

*Keep an eye on the Champions League qualifier between Benfica and Copenhagen to see if Freddy Adu makes his debut.

*Watch for the official announcement from the USSF on the U.S. national team roster for next week's friendly at Sweden.

*Prepare to stay up late to watch Houston host Pachuca in a SuperLiga semifinal beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern on Telefutura. (D.C. is at Los Angeles tomorrow night at the same time.) Semifinal predictions, anyone?

Gomez back?

I'll give DC a 2-1 advantage

Houston slide continues and they go down 2-0

Freddy will play but not start.
Beasley will start and score another goal.

Houston 3-2 Pachuca

DC 2-2 LA, DC advances on PK's 6-5.

DC has to play the finals without Josh Gros, who is issued a red card for repeatedly fouling Klye Martino in the back of the head with a blunt instrument. When asked to explain his egregious actions, Josh reads verbatim a transcript of Martino's comments on his red-card foul against Fred last week.

A Pachuca-LA final with Beckham actually playing and LA winning would be the best case scenario for Superliga and MLS. That being said, LA is just not very good, so I think it will be a DC-Pachuca final, with Pachuca winning in PK's...

if we can't beat LA in this game the team should be disbanded. This will be LA's 4th game in 11 days with all that travel including flying from Boston to LA, even though it is on their private plane. They are without a few key defensive players and we are only missing Burch. I don't expect Becks will play much since they say flying is bad for his ankle.

Posted by: Glenn | August 14, 2007 9:26 AM | Report abuse

I watched the NE-LA game and thought that LA is having the same problems in front of goal that we had (have?) wherein Buddle and Pavón cannot bury the ball in the net if their collective lives depend on it.

Plus they have more injuries than Washington has mosquitos.

As a result, I gotta think United will win, 1-0 again.

As for where to watch the Benfica game, you can watch it online here:

It's a shame that the Galaxy faithful have had to endure the tenure of the most inept GM in professional sports. Lalas has destroyed the team and sucked the passion and confidence from the Galaxy fanbase. Until he and Frank Yallop are canned I don't see the ship being righted. Beckham should demand these two clowns be fired just like he demanded that all MLS teams play in grass. This season is a wash for the Galaxy. I say rest Becks until he's 110% fit. The team needs to be dismantled and built from scratch with new leadership.

Lalas has played a huge part in fizzling out the most anticipated debut in sports this year. Hopefully AEG gets over its crush on the Ginger Kid, and we can get an adult back in charge of the Galaxy. I want it to feel good when we beat this team, not like we beat some rec squad.

Looks like the Benfica PPV feed will not be picked up by Summers (http://www.summers-restaurant.com/). If they don't have it, I don't know who on earth would. Maybe some Portuguese ex-pat bar in Quahog, RI :-)

1-nil Houston tonight
3-1 United tomorrow - keeping the hot away scoring up! Plus LA are just garbage.

Pachuca 1:2 Houston aet

DC United 0:1 LA Galaxy -- Beckham comes on in the second half and Carlos Pavon scores off a classic Beckham free kick into the box. However, Donovan whiffs on another sitter in the first.

(sorry guys, I AM a Galaxy fan...)

I believe Benfica will pull a "Beckam" and put him in for the final 15 minutes, partly to show him off, partly to see what he can do with the big boys.

I have had it for about a year and the picture quality is great and you can watch on a big screen tv instead of tiny computer player. They even let me try it for free.

Anyone know anymore about this?

From MLSRumors:

With the greater interest in investing in Major League Soccer, slightly more ambitious expansion (18 clubs by 2012) and increased international competition fixtures, MLSR has learned that the MLS Board of Govenors will meet later this year to discuss the following:

* Adding a 2nd Designated player per team.

* Increasing the salary cap to between 3.5 and 4.6 million for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

* Changing rules on international players to make any US or Canadian player count as a domestic player

* Changing the rules on Senior and Youth Internationals to allow one more of each per team.

A confidential trusted source in the US and this report from Columbia indicates that Chivas USA will soon be announcing the signing of Columbian forward Oscar Echeverry from Columbian side Atlético Nacional.

MLSR has learned that after a positive vote on Monday, the 15th expansion city most likely will be St. Louis with the club to be called St Louis United. Their website and this MLS report explains their plans to build an 18,500 seat Soccer Specific Stadium just outside of St Louis in Collinsville, IL. (pictured left) The group behind St Louis United went so far as to register their domain name.

Burch is out on red card suspension. I'm guessing Fred moves back to the flank and Gros back to defense unless Vanney is 100%.

The U.S. Roster is up.

Two MLS'ers -- Landon and Mastroeni. Everyone else is European based, so we're looking for a result. Convey is back in, and Davies got another call-up. Should be good. No real surprises on it though.

United should win, but thank God that soccer is back on TV. I went through withdrawl yesterday without it.

If that MLS Rumors thing is true, I am SHOCKED that MLS will add a 2nd DP slot to every team rather than make LA deal with finding a way to keep Beckham and Donovan.

Shocked.

Biggest stunner of my entire life.

Here's the full US team, by the way:

GK: Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann
DF: Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Spector, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Bornstein
MF: Pablo Mastroeni, Michael Bradley, Benny Feilhaber, Clint Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley, Bobby Convey
FW: Landon Donovan, Josh Wolff, Sal Zizzo, Kamani Hill, Charlie Davies

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 14, 2007 2:08 PM | Report abuse

NASL here we come! Adding an extra DP slot as well as the number of Internationals and the big jump in the cap is starting to make the spending seem a bit profligate for a league that claims it is losing so much money. Add to all that allowing teams to travel by private charters. It is too bad if MLS is making a way for LA to keep Becks and LD both, but that is the way this league operates. I guess some one at MLSHQ is listening to Giorgio Chinaglia. That is, if these rumors are true. How good is MLSR's track record?

Posted by: Glenn | August 14, 2007 2:16 PM | Report abuse

I really don't know how you can make a claim that either Pachuca or Houston is better than United at this point. We beat Houston 2-1 at home, they've beat us 1-0 twice in Houston. United was without Moreno is both those matches. Pachuca hasn't looked particularly impressive in Superliga play either. I have a strong feeling it'll be a Houston v DC Superliga Final, and counting United out of any match with a trophy on the line is a bet I wouldn't take.

As for "St Louis United" all signs point to St Louis getting a team, I'd assume they won't begin play until their stadium would be completed in 2010, unless there is an appropriate temporary venue they could use in the area, RCA Dome won't cut it. Also, from all I've gathered "St Louis Soccer United" is just the name of the I/O group, it's more likely they'll be the St Louis Knights, or a similar variation.

Posted by: AlecW81 | August 14, 2007 2:19 PM | Report abuse

Having a second team named United is dumb...

...but not as dumb as having two teams in the same city with the same name.

Posted by: RK | August 14, 2007 2:21 PM | Report abuse

Who's the USMNT captain? Donovan? Whoever it is, if he's healthy, he should always be called up... period. The captain should always be on the team. No more multiple captains. I've had enough of that as we had to deal with it during the Reyna captaincy years... always hurt, rarely playing more than two USMNT matches in a row... Captain America, my ass... my two cents.

Posted by: Soy United! | August 14, 2007 2:21 PM | Report abuse

Even if MLS adds a second DP per team, don't be too surprised to see Donovan sign with Chivas or San Jose....

Posted by: AlecW81 | August 14, 2007 2:21 PM | Report abuse

And MLS Rumors has only been around since July ... not much of a track record to judge them on yet. I think they may be right, but we'll have to wait for Goffinho to fill us in.

I would take anything from them with a grain of salt.

Donovan is going to San Jose! :-)

Posted by: Southeasterner | August 14, 2007 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Remember that MLS Rumors is just that: RUMORS! The rumor regarding a second DP is waaaay off base. Garber's already mentioned that the DP experiment would last through the 2009 season. When the MLS Board has the 2009 annual meeting, they'll vote on whether or not they'll continue the DP policy after the 2009 season. If approved, then they'll vote on whether they'll change the DP policy.

Posted by: Dave the Wave | August 14, 2007 3:31 PM | Report abuse

correction - it looks like the Rams play all their games in this dome.

don't know if it is new or just a renamed RCA dome

Posted by: RK | August 14, 2007 3:34 PM | Report abuse

Agreed. Donovan is going to San Jose. I'm not sure Chivas USA has a DP slot, otherwise he'd probably play for them since he seems set on remaining in LA (or California at the very least).

Posted by: Dave the Wave | August 14, 2007 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Ooops. I meant to say, "I'm not sure Chivas USA has a DP slot next season, since it got traded to RBNY (for at least 2007)."

Posted by: Dave the Wave | August 14, 2007 3:37 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the Burch correction. Any chance MLS boosts roster size next year? Having another DP slot and extra money doesn't seem to do much if you are playing two games or more a week like LA or DC.

Posted by: Gburg | August 14, 2007 3:50 PM | Report abuse

Thoughts on the rumor mill:

I could very easily see MLS going with a second DP slot, and calling it a "domestic designated player" for guys like Donovan, Eddie Johnson, Ching, Reyna, etc. Becks, JPA, Blanco, and their ilk would be classified as "international designated players." Like the international DP, the domestic DP slot could be traded amongst teams, but no team could have more than three DP slots total (two domestic and one international, or vice versa).

St. Louis Soccer United has a very slick and impressive website for stating their case. They have a pretty unique color scheme going on, and I like that knight logo. But I think after the staggered entry of Toronto and re-entry of San Jose, the league should admit teams in a balanced (one East, one West) manner -- which would mean, perhaps, bringing the Pacific Northwest in at the same time, perchance?

Having said that, it would seem that, after STL and PNW, the next best candidates for expansion are in the East (i.e., New York #2, Philadelphia). Perhaps if two groups geographically in the East were admitted, Kansas City could be swung to the West. But I suppose I'm getting ahead of myself here...

Looking at that MLS Rumors website, it's a) pretty new; and b) off base as often as it's on. So consider the source.

(As for the Edward Jones Dome, it was initially the Trans World [TWA] Dome. It opened in 1995.)
