Quick United Update

The team is in Columbus. I am in Washington. So I do not have much for you today. I'll meet up with them tomorrow at Estadio Crew.

All 19 players who traveled to L.A. for SuperLiga went on to Columbus. No one else was called in to join the club in Ohio. No injuries of significance, or so I am told. With Marc Burch eligible after sitting out the Galaxy match Wednesday, someone (Moose? Mediate?) will be scratched from the game-day roster tomorrow.

A few of you have inquired about the veracity of an Internet report claiming Thiago might be on his way from Chicago to D.C. The response I got from someone close to United and quite trustworthy was a chuckle and then, "Oh, really? It's not true." So take that for what it's worth. Still awaiting a callback from Dave Kasper on that rumor and any other possible moves.

That's all for now.....

Adding Thiago would be fine if it meant dropping Addlery...

If your blog gets the 3rd most traffic, why's it listed last on the page of sports blogs?

libre Goff!

You guys are really down on Addlery, Kpene isn't too impressive either, and what ever happened to Deroux?
Goff, any truth to the rumors that DC may try to acquire another start that goes by one name: Blelvis

Goff,

What's the deal with the TV for the Crew game?

Is it on Comcast Sports Net? I read that it will be on "various" regional channels like CN8, but is that along with or instead of CSN?

thanks

FCD Blog reports they are about to make a roster move today but I don't know if it is connected to the Chicago stuff.

Posted by: tex | August 17, 2007 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Re Thiago: Well if it is not true they should at least consider it. He is likely to be free as the Chicago coach doesn't want him anymore. He is an attacking threat and we could use another one of those. I think most fans would cheer such a move. Here's hoping that your source was just being coy.

Would that have some connection to the other Brazilian who is looking to make a move? A certain Brazilian who plays in Saudi Arabia? :-)

Goff any word on that rumor? Or is everyone going to find out at the next FCD press conference?

Posted by: Southeasterner | August 17, 2007 3:06 PM | Report abuse

You see, this is where "text" cannot convey the true meaning of the words. So, allow me to make a fool of myself...

Was it an, "Oooooooooooooooooooh Reeeeeeeally?" Oh really?

Or was it a, "Oh really? Get out of my face." Oh really?

It was a "what-the-bleep-are-you-talking-about" response. Another person I asked about it a few minutes ago couldn't stop laughing.

It will be Dave Johnson doing play-by-play on CN8, just as he does on CSN the rest of the time, won't it? Or will there be a different broadcast crew?

Just read that England boss, McLaren doesn't think MLS will ruin Beckham.. I guess he's not too flattering, but he didn't say anything negative...

We're having a viewing party at Neighbor's Sportsbar and Restaurant in Vienna on Saturday night. Come join us! Also check BigSoccer for other viewing party options.

Thiago would be pretty redundant for us. Gomez, Fred, Dyachenko...do we need another attacking midfielder?

Yeah, he's played forward for Chicago, but only because all the rest of their strikers were injured. He played on the right a few times, but only because Sarachan did a terrible job structuring a roster. He's a good player, but he's not a player we need.

I'm glad the game will be on something aside from useless HDnet, which most people don't get. It's worse than airing your games on Versus! When does the MLS contract with them run out? I can't wait.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 17, 2007 4:42 PM | Report abuse

HDNet looks great on HD DirecTV, but that only covers about 10 of us.

If we can't get a quality natural forward, then we shouldn't bother. It's hard to think of anyone in the west we could trade for that would be worth it. I don't see anyone in the east strengthening our team intentionally.

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | August 17, 2007 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Soccerfan, thanks for the link. I think, though, that you're being a little unfair to McLaren saying that he's "not too flattering." In what I read he's only talking about Beckham's physical condition, saying he'll consult with the Galaxy and the doctors in LA. Why would you expect him to say something "flattering" in that context?

Posted by: Mitch | August 17, 2007 5:08 PM | Report abuse

TV tomorrow: CN8 and HDNet.

CN8 is a Comcast channel available on most of its regional cable systems. HDNet is beautiful to watch...if you can find it.

Comcast SportsNet has the Redskins game.

...and I do hope DC find a DP or another signing to spark the team a bit more.

According to MLS Rumors: Denilson is on for FC Dallas

Here is an update on one of our DP signing rumors: Multiple MLSR sources indicate that the Denilson to FC Dallas deal is complete, The hold up was that Denilson was awaiting Visa paperwork clearance and other red-tape issues. Sources indicate that he will trade his red tape for red hoops and appear at a news conference Monday or Tuesday of next week.

When did Neighbors become a big gathering spot for footie fans? I remember going there once in the late '90s, when United had a weeknight playoff match (against Columbus, I think). I had to ask them to tune one TV to the match, and I was just about the only person watching it.

I'm the Screaming Eagle regiment captain for the Vienna/Tysons/Falls Church area and we've been using Neighbor's as our away game destination for this season only. We reserve the private room behind the bar with the big TV and enjoy the game with like-minded fans. You don't have to be a Screaming Eagle to join us, but sometimes I'll have membership forms if you want to sign up. $20 for camaraderie, free beer at tailgates, a SE jersey, discounted roadtrip prices, etc. It's a deal that can't be beat!

It looks like a good friend of Fenty (and big contributor to his campaign) is set to get the rights to develop Condos (ummm not quite low affordable housing) on Poplar Point. And no stadium is included in the proposal or initial drawings.

As far as political corruption in DC, Berry has just been trumped...according to my DC intern friend the details should be out soon.

Just stumbled upon this story on a Women's Premiership League in England - does anyone know more about it? Is the level of play like what was in the WUSA or is it more like the semi-pro league the Freedom is playing in now?

Poplar Point isn't United's only option within the District, although we may lose MacFarlane if we lose Poplar Point.

I'd rather the team play in Philly than any locale in Virginia.

Posted by: AlecW81 | August 17, 2007 7:15 PM | Report abuse

It's apparently semipro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FA_Women%27s_Premier_League_National_Division). The only limey ever to break into the WUSA was Kelly Smith (http://www.thefa.com/Womens/EnglandSenior/NewsAndFeatures/Postings/2007/08/Kelly_cant_wait.htm), so that should tell you something about the level of play in England.

re: "That's just dumb"

So are the 857 posters who keep clamoring for "VA United". How many posters in Maryland do you see calling for a "MD United"? Maybe 2, max, and I live in North Carolina FFS, you'd think I'd prefer VA because it'd be a shorter drive, but unlike some of you, I'm not ready to throw in the towel for remaining in the District.

"Poplar Point isn't United's only option within the District..."

Please elaborate on the other options. (I am heavily discounting the RFK site as an option, because it is unlikely that District officials would care to foreclose the option of letting the Deadskins build a stadium of FedEx proportions on the site, and there probably isn't room for two stadiums.)

Alarm Clock's info is troubling, especially considering he/she has been right before about poplar point. I remember hearing rumors about Fenty through a lawyer friend of mine before he was elected mayor. He said he had never come across such incompetence in a lawyer before as he had in Fenty. Nevertheless, if this indeed breaks as a corruption story, hopefully the DC Council has the will to stop the deal.

Wrong. It is not an HDNet exclusive. If so, why is it on Columbus Sports Net and CN8? All it would take is a quick trip to thecrew.com or indemand.com to find out the real information instead of making stuff up and misinforming people.

Brian, those networks are hardly nationwide. For all intents and purposes, HDNet has exclusive, nationwide rights to the match. Save the semantics.

Alec - they do not. You can spin it any way you want and cry semantics when you fail to grasp reality, but HDNet does not have exclusive rights and your post did nothing other than mislead fans who otherwise can see the game on TV.

HDNet has a handful of exclusive games where regional broadcasts and broadcast on DK are not allowed. This is not one of those games. And DK is national, albeit subscription, but it is national. So it is shown nationally on two outlets.

Face facts - exclusive means only on that station. And you were dead wrong. So have fun watching it on CN8 and DK people!

Clint missed a sitter that would have tied the game for Fulham USA - he's failing to impress over here. Convey has a lot of work to do to takeover Hunt's starting role. Hunt is playing exceptionally well right now.

Is anyone else wishing that Tony Williams was still in office? This news about Fenty is a little disconcerting.

Posted by: London Dan | August 18, 2007 1:41 PM | Report abuse

emanon,

As GPS said, the Women's EPL is essentially a semi-pro league. Like many such leagues, it has a couple of dominant teams and many also-rans. Last year Arsenal was undefeated in League play and also won both the FA and League cups. On top of that they were the first English side to ever win the European Cup, beating Umea IK (Marta's club).

There are a few decent players other than Kelley Smith. Julie Fleeting played for the San Diego Spirit and now also plays for Arsenal. I don't know if she continued her entertaining away goal celebration; when she played for the Spirit, after a goal she would run to a corner flag, get on all fours, and lift her leg to mimic a dog marking its territory. Good clean family fun.

im not even aiming that high. at this point i wish hizzoner was back. at least barry knew when and where to be corrupt, and that if you are going to come up with a bs excuse to give something to a crony you make sure that on the surface it has something for the people (ie; affordable housing). that was just terrible news for the city and the team.

Ash: Thanks for reminding us about Julie Fleeting. I guess I had forgotten about her because she is Scottish, which I believe makes her the only Caledonian ever to have cracked the WUSA. I guess that means that Smith is going to China and Fleeting isn't. Indeed, the England side is pretty Arsenal-dominated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_women%27s_national_football_team).

Wow, the tone on here has gotten caustic. Does it really matter whether HDNet has "exclusive national rights" to the game? Is being right on such a small matter better than being polite?

Does considering moving to VA spell the end of DC United if the Poplar Point deal falls through? I always thought that it was better to consider all options and weigh the individual proposals against each other to find the one that's best. I see few people hear arguing for moving to VA, and many arguing that the team shouldn't even consider it. In the end, the team takes the best deal it can get, given a myriad of factors. Making wise busness decisions is never easy, otherwise we'd all own a team rather than cheering for it and posting on a blog.

"Poplar Point isn't United's only option within the District, although we may lose MacFarlane if we lose Poplar Point.

Now that was a stupid comment. Last I checked going up 95 to Philly maybe a little longer that a short hop to Dulles. Even easier out to VA once the Metro extension is in.

My first choice is Popular Point but if that is not happening.....United in Virginia!

Posted by: DCU 4EVER | August 18, 2007 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Before we all freak out over a little rumor about Poplar Point we should all relax a bit. Even if Fenty wants to steer a deal to a friend of his it still has to pass the Council. And, altho people here and elsewhere love to bash Marion Berry, he has sounded pretty staunch in his opposition to anything without a stadium for us on that land. Now he is only one vote of course but I would imagine he still has some influence. As much as I can't stand Jack Evans I also wonder if he might not also be on our side. It's hard to guess where all of these new members would come down, but many of them got elected by being against the baseball giveaway so they could have a hard time spending city money on the project. It will also be interesting to see how much money a condo project would want in infrastructure improvements.

I still trust KP to do the right thing, whatever that is.

Posted by: Glenn | August 18, 2007 3:11 PM | Report abuse

If, indeed, a developer who had been a major contributor to Fenty wound up to be Fenty's choice, my guess is that The Post would be all over that. Particularly once Marion started crying foul.

Unless, of course, said developer also was a major contributor to Marion and other council members.

Then, silence.

AlecW81: Just a friendly reminder that 24 hours ago I asked you to specify which non-Poplar Point sites in the District you had in mind. At this point a bird in the hand beats two in the bush; we can only wait and see whether the District or some suburb is the first to come up with a bird in the hand.
