USA Roster Unveiled Tuesday

The USSF will announce tomorrow the national team roster for the Aug. 22 friendly at Sweden. Considering the location and quality of opponent (not to mention the fact that there are three mid-week MLS games and travel demands for domestic players), expect a heavily Euro-based squad.

It is an official FIFA fixture date for friendly matches, which means clubs are obligated to release requested players 48 hours in advance. So there are no call-up issues.

Sweden, atop its qualifying group and preparing for a Sept. 8 qualifier against Denmark, announced its roster today.

Who would you like to see in the U.S. starting lineup?

Adu

Who I'd like to see, or whom I think we wil see? I think we are likely to see an all euro roster, (which is probably OK by me anyway as we see them more rarely)
Likely:
Hahnamann & Howed sharing a half
Dolo- Boca - Gooch - Spector
Beez - Bradley - Benny - convey
Adu
Dempsey

Cory Gibbs (is he still injured?)

Posted by: rc | August 13, 2007 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Not really sure, but I think they should leave Adu with Benfica. Hen is just trying to break in there and you don't want to pull him away even for a couple of days at this point. I think that could be the same case for feilhaber as well.

Speaking of Boca, did anyone catch his PK foul against Arsenal? I like him a lot, but bad decision.

Charlie Davies up top...

Posted by: RK | August 13, 2007 4:36 PM | Report abuse

This is my pet peeve with the USSF.If it is an Intl date and there are no "callup issues",why does it matter how many MLS games there are???? Call up your best team,it's a MLS problem if they continue to play on those dates, and USSF should not cater to them...

And yes I support MLS,but they are stupid on this issue.

Posted by: Lloyd Heilbrunn | August 13, 2007 4:41 PM | Report abuse

It's a moot point -- we'd see Europe-based players, anyway, unless we brought one or two MLSers in (eg Donovan). IMO these friendlies were specifically set up so that those guys get a fair shot for the UNMNT.

Posted by: RK | August 13, 2007 4:43 PM | Report abuse

Never been a fan of Boca playing CB for the USMNT team. His decision makings are poor, and his clearances out of the box are terrible. Quite honestly, both he and Gooch are not international level CBs. I hope we have better options for CBs when 2010 rolls around.

Back to topic, I agreed with the earlier poster in regards to Adu and Benny. They both need to be with their clubs, to settle in and try to earn a spot on the 11. Also, I think Convey with be out of this one as he just came back from a big injury.

Convey status?

Posted by: New England Guy | August 13, 2007 4:49 PM | Report abuse

Not on the roster for Reading last weekend due to fitness.

Posted by: RK | August 13, 2007 4:52 PM | Report abuse

re: Convey

he did start for the reserves the week before and scored the only goal off a free kick 25 minutes in. He didn't last the full 90 though.

Posted by: Zero | August 13, 2007 5:04 PM | Report abuse

Add to the Convey mix the fact that he had only just recently recovered from a knee injury last summer before the World Cup, then - Reading admits - he aggravated the injury or reinjured it during the World Cup.

That aggravation/reinjury led directly subsequent surgery and loss of his place in the Reading eleven.

In other words, Reading lost a winger, and Convey lost his starting job, due to national team duties. I don't see any conceivable way that he is allowed to play against Sweden. The club can merely say the player is not fit, and that is that.

True. Convey has seen action in Reading friendlies including going 90. He's not match-sharp, but he's healthy. Plus Hunt is a real pest and probably better fit the Royals' match plan against ManU. Might see Convey on the field for Reading v Chelsea/Everton prior to the Sweden match.

How many players would be playing in Europe without MLS? How would our national team look? Screwing over MLS teams in the second half of their season isn't a smart move.

Hahnemann
Cherundolo-Onyewu-Bocanegra-Pearce
Dempsey-Feilhaber-Bradley-Beasley
Donovan-Err... Rossi?

(Howard, Simek, Spector, Demerit, Clark, Nguyen, Davies)

A real peeve of mine with both SI.com and ESPN is their excessive homerism. (Same thing with all US-based coverage of the Olympics.) Not to criticize Steve for the SI link above, but here's a link that gives the full Swedish roster -- http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/7118330

Posted by: Chuck | August 13, 2007 5:58 PM | Report abuse

Boca is one of our best CB's, and one of our best defensive players, period.. In fact, he was perhaps Fulham's most valuable defensive player last year (yes, he played outside for them, for the most part). If you bash Blackmouth, then I'm assuming you have a better option?

Posted by: Hoost | August 13, 2007 6:28 PM | Report abuse

Altidore-Adu
Beasley-Feilhaber-Clark-Dempsey
Pearce-DeMerit-Onyewu-Simek
Hanamen

subs- Convey-Boca-Howard-Bradley-
Until EJ grows a pair and transfer to a team in a top leauge he should not be considered. I left Landycakes off because he'll be gowning down with the the Starship Galaxy. Although if Becks is allowed to leave for international frienlies why wouldn't Donovan.

Posted by: Johnny | August 13, 2007 6:28 PM | Report abuse

No point in scheduling a friendly on a FIFA date if you can't bring your best squad.

GK: Howard, Hahnemann
D: Bocanegra, Onyewu, Conrad, Spector, Cherundolo, Bornstein, Hejduk
M: Feilhaber, Bradley, Clark, Mastroeni, Beasley, Dempsey, Adu
F: Donovan, Ching, Johnson, Altidore

Jozy and Altidore need to brought in to 1. acclimate them to the full team, 2. to serve as a wakeup call to Donovan, Johnson and co. that spots need to be earned, and competition is coming.

Hejduk and Mastroeni have the experience and attitude that are still in demand.

Posted by: Adam R. | August 13, 2007 6:29 PM | Report abuse

Hoost your on crack to think Boca is that good. He consistently has 10 minutes in every game that he loses his concentration and make major mistakes. In my mind Boca was responsible for the penalty against Ghana at the WC. Did you see the game yesterday? Boca killed his teams chances of winning and then getting only a point. Are you watching the same CB that I am?

Posted by: Johnny | August 13, 2007 6:46 PM | Report abuse

I don't really think it's "homerism" when American media outlets give better coverage to American teams. I'm not sure what the alternative would be.

Posted by: bbarrie | August 13, 2007 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Adam and Johnny... Why you want Altidore playing in Sweden on the 22nd. :)

Posted by: NY In the House | August 13, 2007 8:20 PM | Report abuse

NY in the House,

The sooner Jozy gets into the senior men's national team the better. I am tired of the usual stiffs (EJ and TT) that pretend to be strikers. Jozy is the best chance for a legitimate threat at foward. I am a red bulls fan, but the national team comes first, always.

If we base it on form and if we need to supplement the roster with MLS players then Alvarez and Goodson deserve get a call from top of the table FC Dallas.

If we base it on players being in form and deserving along the need to supplement a euro roster with MLS player then Alvarez and Goodson certainly deserve a call from top of the table FC Dallas.

Having a pair and wanting to relocate to the other side of the planet are not the same thing, retard.

I love how all you klingon-speakers think you can tell other people how to live their lives. Maybe EJ and Lando *like* living in the country of their birth and they don't *want* to live in Europe and they don't think it's their job to live out the fantasies of internet soccer nerds.

Just the fact that you responded to something I posted on this soccer blog makes you a fellow soccer nerd. Why are you soooo angry. I want EJ and landy to improve their game so the USMNT can get better. I'm not a Eurosnob but you can not deny that the qaulity of play is much better in the top leagues in Europe. It is quite apparent that they have reached a plateau and will not get any better unless they take a "chance" (that pays twice as much, more than likely). EJ's recent national team play has not impressed and until he makes a change to Europe it's time for some new blood...Okay enough blogging it's time to get back to Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.

P.S. That's Mr. Retard to you

Perhaps I'm a bit biased, being a Red Bull fan, but Jozy was physically dominating this past weekend against Toronto. He has no issues playing against grown men.

And as far as his skill goes, you can see him watching Juan Pablo Angel and getting better with each passing game. He's improving at such a rate that he'll be at the top of the food chain by next year...so I say, acclimate him to the full team now.

If you've ever had the chance to meet this kid, he's a very sharp young man, and he'll certainly utilize the experience to his maximum benefit.

The only question is if Bruce Arena will ask Bob to leave him home.

Posted by: Adam R. | August 14, 2007 8:59 AM | Report abuse

I would like to see Altidore, Johnson, and even Ricardo Clarke should go. I think you want to give some MLS players a chance to be seen in Europe.

Posted by: greene | August 14, 2007 10:17 AM | Report abuse

""He has no issues playing against grown men.""

that's because he is a grown man!!!

Jozy is clearly the future striker of the senior squad. He'll get called up soon enough.

And don't get too attached to seeing him in a Red Bulls uniform!! If he is there through the winter transfer window, I'll eat my shorts.

MLS needs to do better with their scheduling. There shouldnt be games that are close to or conflict with the FIFA friendly games, or other competitions such as the Gold Cup or Copa America.

All Euro's unless the MLS team is out of it:

GK: Howard, Hahnemann, Brown
D: Cherundolo, Onyewu, Boca, Pearce, Simek, DeMerit, Califf, Spector (Gibbs for Califf if healthy). Possibly Subotic.
M: Dempsey, Bradley, Feilhaber, Beasley, Adu, Hill, Nguyen, White
F: Wolff, Davies, Zimmerman, Ferrari

Could also see: Convey (if healthy), Johann Smith (if healthy), Zizzo, Brian West.

Burch needs to become a starter for DCU before looking into the USMNT. What's he player 3-4 games? Prove something then check back.

Posted by: frank | August 14, 2007 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Frank,

I hope you are kidding. Marc Burch has had 6 solid games, including 2 assists. His last assist against LA was a perfectly weighted pass that split two defenders.

His left footed service is clearly better than any defender on the current US roster. And to think, he just started playing defense this year. Nevertheless, he's played better than any L side back we've had in months!

Does he need more experience? Sure, but that's why he needs a call-up to camp AT LEAST.

Posted by: delantero | August 14, 2007 2:48 PM | Report abuse

When Vanney's well Burch goes right back to the bench, like I said he's not a starter at this time just a fill in. You want him considered for the NT when he's still playing reserve matches, come on...

How in the world does Convey get a call-up when he hasn't played in nearly a year??? Despite Adu trying to settle in at Benfica, I really think he should have gotten a call up for this game, it is in Europe, plus it is a FIFA break, really doesn't make sense to waste a roster spot on Convey, would have also liked to see Clark get the nod over Mastroeni...

Posted by: Chase | August 15, 2007 12:58 AM | Report abuse

Apparently it is easier for Bornstein to travel from LA than it is for Pearce to get to Sweden all the way from Germany.
