Matchday 23: DCU at Chivas USA [updated]
Hola from Home Depot Center......
Today I'm in Los Angeles, tomorrow somewhere over the Pacific, Saturday in China. The futbol adventure continues.....
Big match for United this evening. They've won six in a row in league play and have conceded just one goal -- a PK -- during that time, but coming off a trip to Dallas and a big Eastern showdown with New England approaching this weekend, this should be a good test against a Chivas side unbeaten at home.
So, whatcha think?
DCU's starting lineup is unchanged: Perkins; Namoff, Boswell, Vanney, Burch; Olsen, Simms, Gomez, Fred; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Nolly, Mediate, McTavish, deRoux, B. Carroll, Kpene, Addlery.
***WARNING: The start of the match might be delayed because of college football programming on ESPN2 (Grrr....)
A few quick notes: Shawn Crowe, the third-string keeper, will have arthroscopic knee surgery next week and be sidelined at least a month. If necessary, United could call in an MLS pool goalie for temporary service. ... Despite media reports in Honduras, Luciano Emilio has not been contacted by the Honduran federation about pursuing citizenship and thus becoming eligible for national team service. ... Technical director Dave Kasper said the club is not pursuing any trades. The roster deadline is next Friday.
You know the drill: Pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts belong here.
I'll be back very late with some final thoughts before passing a few sleepless hours prior to my very long flight to China.

You all are screwed. See ya at halftime

I say DC wins 2:1. Emilio re-takes the lead in the race for the golden boot.
C'mon UNITED!

Buck up Goff. Flying trans-oceanic isn't so bad anymore as long as you've got a personal video player in the seatback. You get to catch up on movies, television shows, or play some trivia against fellow travelers.
Just remember to get up every couple of hours or so to move around, and breathe in some wetted paper towels to get some moisture in your nostrils.

I can't believe Kornheiser spelled my name in his little screed today.
This should be a tough game just like last weekend at Dallas should have been.
Luciano Emilio will score a hattrick in memory of that Italian Luciano that sang at the World Cup.

Simms is the key. If he disrupts Chivas enough then we should be in good shape. Hopefully we can walk away with 1-0.

No trade talks? Are we at least looking at a USL or unsigned player to fill out the roster?
Posted by: Jason | September 6, 2007 9:48 PM | Report abuse
The Louisville game is at 6:19 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
We'll be lucky if that game is over before 1130 PM Eastern.

can't they at least start showing the game on espnnews or classic or even espnU?
in the past they have shown games on espn360, what is the deal with that? is it free?

That is two games in a row that we are going to be missing the start of the match because of other games running over on ESPN2.

I don't quite know why no one wants to come out and watch this team.

I hate games where the clock stops running. These teams need to learn how to play some defense and run the ball so the game takes less than 4 hours. GRRR. Maybe they'll show the game on espn or espn classic or espn news or espn 48 or something...

If only Louisville and Middle Tennessee State ran the ball...
DC will be up 2-0 when ESPN2 switches the feed over, even with delay. 1 for Lucigol, GOTY-candidate from Simms.

Goff, any word from the stadium as to whether they're going to delay or not? The football game just now is getting to the 4th quarter.

the game was always supposed to start at 10:30
Posted by: pat | September 6, 2007 10:16 PM | Report abuse
Actually, the game was originally scheduled for 7 pm PDT but with last weeks WNBA game going way past their limit, MLS moved the game back a half hour.
Fruitless effort at the end of the day however.

ESPN moved the game back last week.
This football game is really starting to piss me off. Even when they run the ball, someone gets hurts and it takes another 90 seconds to get him up so he can run off. This is brutal.

how many people can they put in the stadium tonight anyway?
Are Thursday night matches part of the deal with the college where attendance is limited to like 15,000 people, like it was during the SuperLiga?

The NFL game started 90 minutes later and is going to finish before this one. That is sad.

Posted by: Soy United! | September 6, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse
The sad thing is, ESPN probably doesn't care, because the football game probably gets much higher ratings than the soccer match, so they will let it run as long as it lasts, even if it really is 4 OTs.

Actually, the fact that ESPN delayed the kick and is running the constant updates that the soccer is coming is a good sign that they recognize that a bunch of people are out here waiting to see it. They can't help that this crap has gone an hour too long, but they are doing a good job of getting as much of it to us as they can.

The best way to forget that goal is 2 goals from Jamie, 2 from Benny and the obligatory Josh Gros game sealing goal.

Unbelievably disingenuous comments by Wynalda and O'brien regarding Boswell's anti-ESPN Rant. Completely mis-characterizes the comments, then asks if that was why Soehn benched him!? Because he correctly called out ESPN's poor coverage? Wow, the collective ego is amazing...

Olsen seems to be spending a lot of time in the middle for some reason. I think he needs to be helping Namoff out a bit more with Galindo. I think we relaxed when it got to 2-0 and everyone thought this was going to be as easy as Dallas. I expect Tommy will let them have it at halftime.

Disagree that Perkins has redeemed himself. He has been average at best this year. He should have saved Beckham's FK in the Superliga semifinal. It's better to be lucky than good and Perkins has been lucky on a number of occasions when he has made bad decisions the past month.

Drab second half from DCU. Namoff solid defensively, but he and Clyde uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball.
Seems like from the moment Smyth pointed out how good our width was, our width immediately started sucking. Bowling alley Futbol, esp. in the second half.
DCU very lucky the last 10, but given two deflected goals against, maybe they had it coming.
Tough point on the road

Ugly tie.
Perkins makes too many poor decisions for my liking. He is good for at least one a game, though he doesn't always get punished. I rate him behind Reis, Guzan, Cannon & Onstad & on par with Busch, Sala & Seitz.

We were awful for the last hour. Even if it took 2 lucky goals for Chivas to get even, they deserved to win the game. Obviously, that last offsides call was awful, even by MLS referee standards. I don't know if Chivas played that well as much as us just handing them the ball over and over again. Honestly, with the number of turnovers we had, they should have won this game with ease.
Perkins, the back four, and Emilio played well. Everyone else, not so much. Fred may have had his worst game in a DC shirt. If we play like this against the Revs, we will not be in first for long.
Let me be the first:
Perkins 7
Namoff 6
Boswell 7
Vanney 7
Burch 7
Olsen 4
Simms 5
Gomez 5
Fred 3
Moreno 5
Emilio 7
B. Carroll 5
Mediate NR
I'm not even going to bother talking about ESPN. This is a family website, after all.

Really good play. Of course the game hinges on a blown call in favor of DC. There aren't many teams that can beat DC, but there won't be refs as fraudulent as tonight.
Only shot at a trophy is the Supporters Shield. And that will be decided this weekend.

And yeah, those refs were really good tonight: RED card to you -- Whoops, sorry, I mean, yellow card to that other guy that I thought was you... Was that offside? Oh heck, I'll just raise my flag anyway...

The first goal resulted in a poor decision by Perkins. It was unlucky for sure, but he should not have tried clearing so close to Razov and the DC defender (Boswell I think). He wasn't under pressure so the better decision would have been to step on the ball and play it to the other side...or just out of bounds to his left.

It was Vanney, not Boswell. Vanney gave up on the ball when Perkins was coming out for it. Perhaps he should have kept up his momentum toward the ball and touched it back to Troy so he could have cleared it before Razov had a chance to get in the way. And Troy should have blasted the ball higher so there would be no doubt.
