Matchday 23: DCU at Chivas USA [updated]

Hola from Home Depot Center......

Today I'm in Los Angeles, tomorrow somewhere over the Pacific, Saturday in China. The futbol adventure continues.....

Big match for United this evening. They've won six in a row in league play and have conceded just one goal -- a PK -- during that time, but coming off a trip to Dallas and a big Eastern showdown with New England approaching this weekend, this should be a good test against a Chivas side unbeaten at home.

So, whatcha think?

DCU's starting lineup is unchanged: Perkins; Namoff, Boswell, Vanney, Burch; Olsen, Simms, Gomez, Fred; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Nolly, Mediate, McTavish, deRoux, B. Carroll, Kpene, Addlery.

***WARNING: The start of the match might be delayed because of college football programming on ESPN2 (Grrr....)

A few quick notes: Shawn Crowe, the third-string keeper, will have arthroscopic knee surgery next week and be sidelined at least a month. If necessary, United could call in an MLS pool goalie for temporary service. ... Despite media reports in Honduras, Luciano Emilio has not been contacted by the Honduran federation about pursuing citizenship and thus becoming eligible for national team service. ... Technical director Dave Kasper said the club is not pursuing any trades. The roster deadline is next Friday.

You know the drill: Pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts belong here.

I'll be back very late with some final thoughts before passing a few sleepless hours prior to my very long flight to China.

I too am live at the HDC.

first time visit, fantastic facility.

The Cathedral of US Soccer - Open only on weekends

With a Thursday exception or two...

Hey, Steve, you may have to do play by play...I understand that the ESPN2 college game is running long.

Posted by: seahawkdad | September 6, 2007 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Currently it's 12:30 to go in the 3rd quarter of a 38-35 game.

You all are screwed. See ya at halftime

Posted by: C Webb | September 6, 2007 9:28 PM | Report abuse

I say DC wins 2:1. Emilio re-takes the lead in the race for the golden boot.

C'mon UNITED!

Posted by: David | September 6, 2007 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Buck up Goff. Flying trans-oceanic isn't so bad anymore as long as you've got a personal video player in the seatback. You get to catch up on movies, television shows, or play some trivia against fellow travelers.

Just remember to get up every couple of hours or so to move around, and breathe in some wetted paper towels to get some moisture in your nostrils.

Posted by: Vladimir | September 6, 2007 9:39 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe Kornheiser spelled my name in his little screed today.

This should be a tough game just like last weekend at Dallas should have been.

Luciano Emilio will score a hattrick in memory of that Italian Luciano that sang at the World Cup.

Posted by: garbaggio | September 6, 2007 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Simms is the key. If he disrupts Chivas enough then we should be in good shape. Hopefully we can walk away with 1-0.

Posted by: Friendship Heights | September 6, 2007 9:46 PM | Report abuse

No trade talks? Are we at least looking at a USL or unsigned player to fill out the roster?

Posted by: Jason | September 6, 2007 9:48 PM | Report abuse

The Louisville game is at 6:19 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

We'll be lucky if that game is over before 1130 PM Eastern.

Posted by: Mike | September 6, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse

McTavish out of the starting lineup again??

Posted by: Anonymous | September 6, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse

"...MLS Pool Goalie"???

Who/What are they? Is Tom Presthus a pool goalie now??
Where do these people live, Garber's guest house??

Posted by: Rocko | September 6, 2007 9:58 PM | Report abuse

At this point, why would we need to "fill out the roster?" Do we not have enough players?

Posted by: UVA to RFK | September 6, 2007 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Well looks like I am not going to be able to watch the game now that it will not be shown on television..

Posted by: Garret | September 6, 2007 10:00 PM | Report abuse

can't they at least start showing the game on espnnews or classic or even espnU?

in the past they have shown games on espn360, what is the deal with that? is it free?

Posted by: pat | September 6, 2007 10:06 PM | Report abuse

That is two games in a row that we are going to be missing the start of the match because of other games running over on ESPN2.

Thank goodenss for WMET http://wmet1160.com/

Posted by: not again | September 6, 2007 10:07 PM | Report abuse

looks like espn 360 is only available through certain internet providers. anyone with verizon or rcn should get it? not me though

Posted by: pat | September 6, 2007 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Sparse crowd tonight.

I don't quite know why no one wants to come out and watch this team.

Posted by: C Webb | September 6, 2007 10:09 PM | Report abuse

I hate games where the clock stops running. These teams need to learn how to play some defense and run the ball so the game takes less than 4 hours. GRRR. Maybe they'll show the game on espn or espn classic or espn news or espn 48 or something...

Posted by: Glenn | September 6, 2007 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Just talked to Allen Hopkins and I've talked him into a Fells Point bar hop on the Friday night before MLS Cup.

He has no idea what he has gotten himself into.

Posted by: C Webb | September 6, 2007 10:10 PM | Report abuse

If only Louisville and Middle Tennessee State ran the ball...

DC will be up 2-0 when ESPN2 switches the feed over, even with delay. 1 for Lucigol, GOTY-candidate from Simms.

Posted by: B.A. | September 6, 2007 10:11 PM | Report abuse

MLSnet is now listing kick off time as 10:30. So now maybe we only miss the first 20 minutes....

Posted by: Andy In Asheville | September 6, 2007 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Goff, any word from the stadium as to whether they're going to delay or not? The football game just now is getting to the 4th quarter.

Posted by: Mike | September 6, 2007 10:14 PM | Report abuse

the game was always supposed to start at 10:30

Posted by: pat | September 6, 2007 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Actually, the game was originally scheduled for 7 pm PDT but with last weeks WNBA game going way past their limit, MLS moved the game back a half hour.

Fruitless effort at the end of the day however.

We've always been at war with Eastasia.

Posted by: just sayin | September 6, 2007 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Andy, I am pretty sure the game was originally supposed to start @ 10:30.

Posted by: 10:30 | September 6, 2007 10:19 PM | Report abuse

well, the longer they delay the match, the more people that might watch it after the Colts/Saints game on NBC is over.

Posted by: tick tick tick | September 6, 2007 10:26 PM | Report abuse

Looks like United in the all whites tonight

Posted by: C Webb | September 6, 2007 10:27 PM | Report abuse

ESPN moved the game back last week.

This football game is really starting to piss me off. Even when they run the ball, someone gets hurts and it takes another 90 seconds to get him up so he can run off. This is brutal.

Posted by: mcn107 | September 6, 2007 10:27 PM | Report abuse

how many people can they put in the stadium tonight anyway?

Are Thursday night matches part of the deal with the college where attendance is limited to like 15,000 people, like it was during the SuperLiga?

Posted by: odessa steps magazine | September 6, 2007 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Are they gonna start the match at 10:30pm or will they wait for ESPN2?

Posted by: Bart | September 6, 2007 10:28 PM | Report abuse

C Webb you're on play-by-play... Go!

Posted by: Soy United! | September 6, 2007 10:29 PM | Report abuse

I'd be taking a pay cut if I did that. :)

Posted by: C Webb | September 6, 2007 10:31 PM | Report abuse

they will not wait. we are going to miss 25 minutes or so. any other team would have finished the game by now, but not louisville, they routinely make 4+ hour games...

Posted by: mcn107 | September 6, 2007 10:32 PM | Report abuse

This is a crock of S$%#! Watching Middle Tennessee State vs. Louisville. What a GD joke. They wouldn't do this if Beckham was playing :)

Still. This is Bul'sht. That's a contraction.

Kickoff is at 10:53

New kickoff, 10:53

Posted by: Gburg | September 6, 2007 10:32 PM | Report abuse

Kickoff moved to 10:53 for now.

Posted by: Mike | September 6, 2007 10:32 PM | Report abuse

ESPN2 just said kickoff will be at 10:53

Posted by: JkR | September 6, 2007 10:32 PM | Report abuse

I take that back...they are delaying the kickoff until 10:53. That's unheard of, but I will take it.

Posted by: mcn107 | September 6, 2007 10:32 PM | Report abuse

why can't they bump this show about the 2003 red sox game and the 1998 rodeo off ESPN Classic for a live game? does that make too much sense?

Posted by: pat | September 6, 2007 10:33 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe it has taken them like 25 minutes to play 4 minutes of "football". This is torture.

It has taken 23 minutes for the first 4 minutes of this quarter.

and now another injury. And even though he is not on the field, they are still holding up the game. Pathetic.

Well done MLS.

Posted by: C Webb | September 6, 2007 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Cool... thanks for the heads-up on the new kickoff time. I'm adding an extra hour to the end of my recording and then going to bed... just too late for this grizzled vet...;-)

Posted by: Soy United! | September 6, 2007 10:35 PM | Report abuse

They are holding up play for a guy that is lying injured on the sidelines. This really makes me wish for the soccer stretcher to keep the game moving, but macho football fans would never understand that.

Posted by: DC | September 6, 2007 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Looks like my forethought to tack on an additional 30 mins to my DVR recording is going to pay off.

Provided it's worth watching.

bets on what time this game will end? i am saying 11:15

Posted by: pat | September 6, 2007 10:39 PM | Report abuse

I'm not kidding when I say it looks to be about only 5-6,000 people here, and that's with a delayed kickoff

Posted by: C Webb | September 6, 2007 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Is the wmet online feed sounding a bit weird for anyone else?

Posted by: emanon | September 6, 2007 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Are they really moving the real kick off back to 10:53 or is that the time that ESPN will start showing the game on a delay so we don't miss anything but it's not live.

Posted by: owendylan | September 6, 2007 10:42 PM | Report abuse

11:09

Posted by: DC | September 6, 2007 10:43 PM | Report abuse

The Wmet feed is a bit scratchy for me as well.

The Radio guy just said they have delayed the kickoff

Posted by: Rocko | September 6, 2007 10:43 PM | Report abuse

I predict this game will go to 4 OTs

Posted by: Glenn | September 6, 2007 10:44 PM | Report abuse

Ok... root for L'ville to get the ball back and the other team to have bad run defense.

Posted by: RB | September 6, 2007 10:44 PM | Report abuse

11:09 is way optimistic. This crap is going all night :(

Posted by: mcn107 | September 6, 2007 10:45 PM | Report abuse

So do these guys in the helmets actually ever play? 10 min for a guy on the ground followed by 2 or 3 plays then a timeout. Painful... time to send another note to ESPN...

Posted by: -K | September 6, 2007 10:46 PM | Report abuse

The NFL game started 90 minutes later and is going to finish before this one. That is sad.

Posted by: mcn107 | September 6, 2007 10:46 PM | Report abuse

They shouldn't get any more commercials after their allotted time has expired!

Posted by: Soy United! | September 6, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse

The sad thing is, ESPN probably doesn't care, because the football game probably gets much higher ratings than the soccer match, so they will let it run as long as it lasts, even if it really is 4 OTs.

louisville has to try to run out the clock now, right? please?

Posted by: pat | September 6, 2007 10:50 PM | Report abuse

FYI, Tony Limarzi is not here in LA (birth of his second child), so it's going to be quite interesting to see (or hear) how the radio broadcast will proceed without a live TV feed in Washington.

Posted by: Goff | September 6, 2007 10:50 PM | Report abuse

Actually, the fact that ESPN delayed the kick and is running the constant updates that the soccer is coming is a good sign that they recognize that a bunch of people are out here waiting to see it. They can't help that this crap has gone an hour too long, but they are doing a good job of getting as much of it to us as they can.

Posted by: mcn107 | September 6, 2007 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: roblinsky | September 6, 2007 11:26 PM | Report abuse

Can someone explain to me why there always seems to be so much room for the Goats on the left wing? What is Namoff doing that opens up so much space? Pinching? Simply getting caught too high?

Posted by: stevie in gp | September 6, 2007 11:29 PM | Report abuse

The best way to forget that goal is 2 goals from Jamie, 2 from Benny and the obligatory Josh Gros game sealing goal.

Unbelievably disingenuous comments by Wynalda and O'brien regarding Boswell's anti-ESPN Rant. Completely mis-characterizes the comments, then asks if that was why Soehn benched him!? Because he correctly called out ESPN's poor coverage? Wow, the collective ego is amazing...

BTW - The halftime show is telling me Chicago is beating DC 2-1 at the half.

Posted by: B.A. | September 6, 2007 11:42 PM | Report abuse

Olsen seems to be spending a lot of time in the middle for some reason. I think he needs to be helping Namoff out a bit more with Galindo. I think we relaxed when it got to 2-0 and everyone thought this was going to be as easy as Dallas. I expect Tommy will let them have it at halftime.

Posted by: Glenn | September 6, 2007 11:43 PM | Report abuse

espn is so ignorant.. its halftime.. they have a graphic that shows that dc united is playing chicago and are losing 2 - 1 ... this is a game they are broadcastin.. get it right fools

Disagree that Perkins has redeemed himself. He has been average at best this year. He should have saved Beckham's FK in the Superliga semifinal. It's better to be lucky than good and Perkins has been lucky on a number of occasions when he has made bad decisions the past month.

Drab second half from DCU. Namoff solid defensively, but he and Clyde uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball.

Seems like from the moment Smyth pointed out how good our width was, our width immediately started sucking. Bowling alley Futbol, esp. in the second half.

DCU very lucky the last 10, but given two deflected goals against, maybe they had it coming.

Tough point on the road

Ugly tie.

Perkins makes too many poor decisions for my liking. He is good for at least one a game, though he doesn't always get punished. I rate him behind Reis, Guzan, Cannon & Onstad & on par with Busch, Sala & Seitz.

We were awful for the last hour. Even if it took 2 lucky goals for Chivas to get even, they deserved to win the game. Obviously, that last offsides call was awful, even by MLS referee standards. I don't know if Chivas played that well as much as us just handing them the ball over and over again. Honestly, with the number of turnovers we had, they should have won this game with ease.

Perkins, the back four, and Emilio played well. Everyone else, not so much. Fred may have had his worst game in a DC shirt. If we play like this against the Revs, we will not be in first for long.

Let me be the first:

Perkins 7
Namoff 6
Boswell 7
Vanney 7
Burch 7
Olsen 4
Simms 5
Gomez 5
Fred 3
Moreno 5
Emilio 7
B. Carroll 5
Mediate NR

I'm not even going to bother talking about ESPN. This is a family website, after all.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | September 7, 2007 12:52 AM | Report abuse

What poor decisions did Perkins make? 2 extremely lucky deflected goals.

If you're trying to find a reason why teams struggle, look to the midfield, grasshopper...

Posted by: JkR | September 7, 2007 12:53 AM | Report abuse

Really good play. Of course the game hinges on a blown call in favor of DC. There aren't many teams that can beat DC, but there won't be refs as fraudulent as tonight.

Only shot at a trophy is the Supporters Shield. And that will be decided this weekend.

Posted by: Terp | September 7, 2007 12:55 AM | Report abuse

Wonder what Perkins is feeling now...

And yeah, those refs were really good tonight: RED card to you -- Whoops, sorry, I mean, yellow card to that other guy that I thought was you... Was that offside? Oh heck, I'll just raise my flag anyway...

Posted by: Juan-John | September 7, 2007 1:00 AM | Report abuse

The first goal resulted in a poor decision by Perkins. It was unlucky for sure, but he should not have tried clearing so close to Razov and the DC defender (Boswell I think). He wasn't under pressure so the better decision would have been to step on the ball and play it to the other side...or just out of bounds to his left.

It was Vanney, not Boswell. Vanney gave up on the ball when Perkins was coming out for it. Perhaps he should have kept up his momentum toward the ball and touched it back to Troy so he could have cleared it before Razov had a chance to get in the way. And Troy should have blasted the ball higher so there would be no doubt.
