Matchday 26: DCU at Chicago

Steinberg here. I'm at Estadio FedEx Field today; former Post intern Steve Yanda is in Chicago. Lineup will be posted about around 2 pm.

The talk around RFK this week was that all focus now shifts toward the Supporters Shield and homefield in the playoffs; Tom Soehn, though, said that's where the focus has been from the beginning. United is 8-0-1 over its last nine, but is coming off its longest layoff since the all-star break. The first game after that break? A 1-0 loss to New York. Chicago is 4-2-3 since the all-star break, and is tied for the last playoff berth ,but has a game in hand on Columbus. Still, with a nasty closing stretch (@Chivas, vs. NE, @DC), the Fire need a result today.

Today's WaPo story on Blanco and the resurgent Fire. The Boston Globe's Frank Dell'Apa discusses the designated player rule on ESPN.com, deciding that "United might never need a designated player if it continues to find performers like Christian Gomez and the Brazilians." The Houston Chronicle's Glenn Davis also looks at the foreign talent infusion. One of the Fire's infused talents, Paulo Wanchope, is questionable with a knee issue.

The Chicago Tribune looks at the Fire's new owner, and Chris Rolfe blogs about today's game, while the Sun-Times looks at his new role.

Ok, please to put your pre-game, in-game and post-game thoughts here.

The Supporters Shield over MLS cup any day of the week. Heck, I'd rather see a deep run into SudaAmerica than MLS cup.

Whether these designated players actually improve a teams standings is one thing. All of them have brought more skill and just overall ability which the hard working MLS needs. Let's not forget Reyna (shocking), GoldenBalls have spent more time watching then playing. Thats 2/5th of the arguement. Denilson and Blanco at times have been highlight reels with mixed results. Angel is near the top of goal scoring.

These guys make the league better period.

While you guys wait for todays United game to start give Marc Fisher's blog on RFK a read. Interesting quote from Fenty. Of course he doesn't mention what town he expects United to be in. Mine is the second response.

Marc Fisher cares only for facts that support his prejudices. It's useless to try to change his mind on anything.

In Chi-town for the game. Anyone know the lineup? Must admit I am nervous without Benny, Jaime, and Fred. Vamos United!

What about Gomez ... Why aren't we starting him?

Posted by: soccergirl | September 23, 2007 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Gomez out with yellow card accumulation, not Moreno. Moreno on the bench.(?)

Posted by: | September 23, 2007 02:24 PM

Might be nicked up or otherwise not 100%, but I predict Soehn's using him as a supersub. Let Kpene run out the Fire defenders, and then bring in Jaime to finish them off.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 23, 2007 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of Supporter's Shiled....
Amazing strike by Razov to take 3 points for Chivas - man I thought it was a tie.
And I felt really dirty doing it but, I was rooting for NY/NJ to tie the game to keep NE down. And they did with a nice goal by Angel against that slime Reis.
DC needs to get 3 today to stay way out in front. May be challenging with the yellow card suspensiions but, Soehn seems to have been working towards games like these the last couple of months.

What I posted was what was up at MLSnet at the time.

Posted by: AlecW81 | September 23, 2007 3:10 PM | Report abuse

So are we playing in a 5-4-1 or a 5-3-1-1 with Moreno playing behind Luci (I am in Boston without a TV so I am just basing this off the mlsnet lineups).

Can anyone watching enlighten me?

Posted by: Bret | September 23, 2007 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Looks like a 4-4-2, with Jaime pitching back a bit into the midfield from time tot time.

Carr just leveled Troy. No card????

Posted by: Anonymous | September 23, 2007 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Don't understand why that wasn't a card.

Posted by: soccergirl | September 23, 2007 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Oh really. I was just confused by McT, Boz and Vanney all in the game at the same time -- so then Namoff is in the midfield?

Posted by: Bret | September 23, 2007 03:24 PM

No, McTavish is in midfield.

Barrett just beat Namoff for a goal.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 23, 2007 3:25 PM | Report abuse

I think we'll see Dyachenko in for either McTavish or Carrol in the 2nd half to get an attacking presence in the midfield, either that or drop Moreno back to CAM and brink Kpene in.

Posted by: AlecW81 | September 23, 2007 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Wow, there's purpose and organization to the Fire attack. What a difference Blanco makes. How refreshing for MLS. Bastages...

Posted by: Glenn | September 23, 2007 03:40 PM

It's not just the time off, it's the absence of Gomez, Olsen and Fred; the spine of the team is missing.

Posted by: Red Devil | September 23, 2007 3:43 PM | Report abuse

it's not like the guys who are playing are a bunch of scrubby newcomers though. We should still be able to at least possess the ball and play with these guys instead of being back on our heels and fouling fouling fouling.

Let's hope United makes some offensively oriented subs at the half if they aren't able to tie it up here.

Posted by: AlecW81 | September 23, 2007 3:49 PM | Report abuse

I'm worried Prus will lose control of this match in the 2nd half... and the fact we didn't get at least 3 minutes of stoppage time is BS. Generally speaking you add a minute per goal, injury, and sub.

Simms in for Namoff right before the half.

Posted by: Colm | September 23, 2007 3:55 PM | Report abuse

looks like Ruiz now loses his title as the biggest diver in the league. Blanco is the king of falling down.

Addlery???? Is this how far we have fallen?

Posted by: Glenn | September 23, 2007 4:21 PM | Report abuse

This is one of the wierdest matches I've seen for us in a long time. Addlery?!? And the lack of a midfield presence has led to a million decent chances by the Fire. It should be like 6 -0 by now. I think Blanco has spent more time rolling around n the ground than standing.

Thats what I call a poached point on the road. Credit the defense and especially Perkins for outstanding work to keep Chicago to one goal. We probably had more posession over the 90 but it wasn't always quality, the final third today was problematic. No creativity in the midfield and a fortunate goal. 1-1.

Posted by: sbg | September 23, 2007 5:11 PM | Report abuse

after deroux came in, i was skeptical. but moreno took advantage of a goalie blunder, and dcu really controlled the tempo. that perkins save at the end was just fantastic. considering the way they played in the 1st half, dcu absolutely stole a point today.

2 points:

a) I watched Chicago's match on Thursday and yes Blanco is the king of taking dives.

b) A stolen point on the road is better than zero points. Keeps the streak alive.

I thought we played pretty well and came out strong considering we have a pretty big game we need to rest up for on Wednesday and we were short 3 of our key players.

Hail to the Redskins

Loss to one of the worst teams in the NFL puts them on the front page of the Post

Hail to the Nationals?

Second to last place and one of the worst teams in Baseball and they get half of the sports section? RFK was only home for 3 seasons! Get over it.

DC United who?

Best team in MLS, tie good Chicago team on the road and Moreno hits number 110? Small article on page E03.

Isn't it 111 for Jaime?

Posted by: Chico | September 24, 2007 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Soehn must have heard me, I was calling for Namoff's head from his first touch on the ball. He was awful all around, then he goes down as his sub is waiting for a stoppage in play. Why wasn't Simms starting, he is one of our better full 90 players?

Posted by: J-Mart | September 24, 2007 9:54 AM | Report abuse

"but moreno took advantage of a goalie blunder"

what blunder would that be, leaving the upper 90 of near post on an almost impossible angle open?

Please, that was one of the finest strikes of Jaime's career, and when we needed it most. Let's not get in the habit of blaming the goalie for a masterful goal.

Posted by: J-Mart | September 24, 2007 10:01 AM | Report abuse

Can someone please enlighten Yanda that the Supporter's Shield is not "less important"? Uhh, it only brings with it the automatic SuperLiga berth, and has only been the goal of the team all year ...

Goff, while I'm sure you're having a blast in China, we need you back here. My work productivity has soared to new heights.

Posted by: DC Centurion's Shield | September 24, 2007 10:16 AM | Report abuse

Perkins kept us competitive by not giving up multiple goals, although i don't think anyone could have blamed him if he had. Namoff just plain stank and Mediate was a pleasant surprise. Emilio looked lost the entire game; and besides his goal, i don't think Jaime was that much of a factor (ie. his usual self), he had a tough time picking out the runs.

It was good to see soehn use every available sub and that the team settled down when they came on. I would have liked to have seen emilio take the early exit and leave mediate in, because he was looking sharper and he probably has a better rapport with our younger front line.

Perkins - 9
Burch - 6.5
Vanney - 5.5
McTavish - 6
Namoff - 2.5
Boswell - 6
Carroll - 5.5
Gros - 6.5
Mediate - 6
Moreno - 7
Emilio - 6

Simms - 5.5
Addlery - 5
DeRoux - 6

And too bad benny couldn't have saved his yellow card for this game (i can guarantee he would have gotten one for hacking blanco) and then sit out vs. toronto. We needed him more this week than next.

Vamos United!!!

Posted by: J-Mart | September 24, 2007 10:50 AM | Report abuse

Apparently, Moreno's touch was off and the sublime strike was actually a flubbed cross (from the MLSnet post-game quotes):

"I stole the ball and I faked it a couple times to cross it and when I crossed it, it went straight into the goal. It was too bad for the 'keeper. He thought it was going to go outside and it went it. It's one of those goals that don't look nice but at the end of the day we'll take it."

The least of the blunder was not covering the near post. The real blunder was Pickens ducking and cowering like a 10 y/o girl as he got near the post. C'mon, the guy is paid to play GK. That was horrible keeping. It wasn't like when Moreno beat Reis near post in the Conf finals in '04. This was an out and out POOR play by Pickens. Watch the replay on mlsnet and see the view from the sideline. They should shoot Pickens for that gaffe.
All that being said, it sure was awesome to steal that point.

Posted by: marksman | September 24, 2007 12:36 PM | Report abuse

To MLS "Goal of the Week" nominating committee:

WTF?

How could Moreno's goal not be included! It was one of the best goals of the year! To put it in that spot, whether intended as a shot or not, is SICK!! I'm ready to give up on the Goal of the Week.

Posted by: Dsmac | September 24, 2007 12:53 PM | Report abuse

I loved Jaime's goal and thought it was career highlight material at first. But on replay, it was obviously a horrible blunder by "Alligator Arms" Pickens.

I also initially thought Chud Barret had handled Blanco's cross on Chicago's goal but replay showed he chested or "bellied" it down well.

Great result for DC stealing a point on with key players missing and against a hot team.

10-game unbeaten run - bring on the Bimbo Team from Guadalajara!

Posted by: garbaggio | September 24, 2007 1:17 PM | Report abuse

I don't mean to hate on any player in particular, just saying that there were too many players above 5 for a game where we gave away so many scoring opportunities, and created so few.

Without Perkins having an outstanding game (and helped by Simms once that I remember) we wouldn't have stolen the point. So I'd keep his score high. His one goal against came on a break away. Not much you could do against that.

Posted by: LeesburgSoccerFan | September 24, 2007 2:15 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, my first reaction to Moreno's goal was "WOW, what a goal!!!" then I saw Picken's contorting himself to avoid the ball..... He didn't want to give up a corner, so he gave up a goal instead.

Still a nice moment for Moreno, though, especially since he apparently told Rongen that he expected to score a "cheeky" goal in the game.

Posted by: stairs | September 24, 2007 5:10 PM | Report abuse

We were really fortunate here to steal a point on the road with three of our top players sitting out. There might have been a little bit of luck to it, but also a lot of class. Only a championship caliber team would get a point out of a match with those circumstances.

But I too was a bit mystified by the subs. Deroux? Really? He's a fine player with great speed, and could probably start for some clubs... but... He doesn't seem like an offensive sub to me. An offensive sub would have been Dyachenko or Moose. In fact, I don't understand why Dyachenko wasn't starting ahead of Mediate. Isn't he our default CAM when Gomez is out usually?
