United's Traveling Party

Greetings from Chicago.....

I can't tell you United's starting lineup yet, but I can tell you that the 18-man game-day roster will include:

Goalkeepers: Perkins and Nolly.

Defenders: Namoff, McTavish, Vanney, Boswell and Burch.

Midfielders: Olsen, Carroll, Simms, Gomez, Fred, Mediate, deRoux.

Forwards: Emilio, Moreno, Kpene, Dyachenko.

Please share your starting lineup predictions! Is Moreno in and Emilio out? Both in? Both out? Whatcha think?

I am also checking on two rumors with major implications for the DCU ballclub. At the moment, they are just rumors. As soon as I know more, I will share them with you. Be patient. Might be a while.

Is it safe taking the train to the bus to toyota park? Any safe recommendations for getting to the game? thanks

Perhaps a premature death knell... but Adderly is noticably absent from the travelling squad in light of injuries to both starting forwards.

Posted by: Mickey | October 24, 2007 10:28 PM | Report abuse

I'll go with the prediction of Moreno starting and perhaps seeing Emilio as a 2nd half sub depending on how the game is going. Since Kpene is due for a goal and Dyachenko may still be having back issues, I'll give Kpene the start.

I predict an increase in the cap and more SI spots are confirmed for next year! Either that or we have a sponsor and new stadium agreement. Either set will work.

Posted by: Juan-John | October 24, 2007 11:15 PM | Report abuse

I'd say Veron would be more likely if it's in regards to a DP.

I'm nowhere near optimistic enough at the moment to hope for any significant stadium news, but political pressure on Fenty to include United at Poplar Point is definitely mounting.

Perhaps news on a sponsor, or the re-signing of Gomez?

Posted by: AlecW81 | October 24, 2007 11:26 PM | Report abuse

If seen, I promise to hound Fenty for 26.2 miles on Sunday.

That's an unfair tease. I have some serious blue balls. I hope they come soon. My two guesses are the Nationals are coming back for another year and the new stadium will be built in College Park with a name change to MD United. :)

Mr. Goff, I hope you know that by using a cliff hanger, this news better be huge and completely unpredictable, or else we'll be utterly disappointed.

Moreno and Emilio are fine. Are you really buying the "ouch, I hurt my foot on the turf"? You don't think Soehn said, "hey, best forwards in the league, pretend to twist your ankle so Chicago won't know how to prepare"?

Anybody see Freddy Adu getting in the game for Benfica? I saw the highlight of the goal, and it looked like he was the first player to reach Cardozo after the goal. Good to see he got a few minutes in the game - about a half hour I think. I agree with those who think that Emilio will sit for the start of the game and Moreno will start. No time like now to vanquish those playoff demons and put the Fire under the gun coming back to DC. Wish I could be there with you guys in the district,
but I'll be watching on Wynalda vision!

Posted by: dug | October 25, 2007 12:20 AM | Report abuse

I think some are reading too much into Addlery not making the trip.

Dyachenko is the better choice due to his ability to play both forward and central midfield. Addlery can only play forward. When the bench is limited, players that can fill a variety of roles are more valuable.

Tim,
There's a world series game tonight so choose your bar carefully. The Screaming Eagles have posted a list of places but none in MoCo at the moment.

http://screaming-eagles.com/?p=625

I'll go with Verizon as a sponsor for one of the surprises and a contract renewal for Emilio, Gomez or someone else for the other.

If Veron happens it'll be in the offseason, no sense distracting our current players by making them think about job security right now. I'm feeling a bit skittish about the next major piece of news re the stadium so I hope it's not that.

Best of luck to United tonight!

These rumors will not be good for DC United. Here are my guesses:

1. Parking WILL occur at RFK for the Nationals next season, so the team will have to schedule around baseball, once again.

2. Major League Lacrosse at RFK. : ) Perhaps Major League Field Hockey, too?

Posted by: Hoost | October 25, 2007 7:40 AM | Report abuse

If Nats fans start hogging parking at RFK during DC UNited games, methinks some people are going to come back from Nats park to find valve stems missing.

Enough is enough.

Are you going to do an MLS Playoff preview like (or better) than the New York Times?

I'm still in shock that they had two articles covering soccer (the other being on Ryan) in one day, it looks like they are finally backing Angel and the Red Bulls.

Posted by: NY will win MLS Cup in DC | October 24, 2007 08:08 AM

And Goff responds big time!

Great article on the playoffs in the Post today and I really can't believe you went as far as giving your final score predictions for each series.

Although now I'm not so sure if I want to deal with the stress of watching overtime and a penatly shootout at RFK...maybe I'll tivo the match.

Posted by: Southeasterner | October 25, 2007 8:15 AM | Report abuse

The way he worded it, I definitely think one of the rumors is that the Nationals will be using RFK for parking. The other one I think will news on Moreno, Emilio or Gomez. They've either resigned or they've decided that this will be their last year in DC.

But what I'd wish for the two rumors are that 1. the salary cap is doubling allowing United to resign everyone AND get Veron and 2. Fenty has backed down and allowed United to build at Poplar Point.

Posted by: lawrenceterp | October 25, 2007 8:27 AM | Report abuse

Rumors:

1) Moreno has forsaken the blond hair efforts seen in the past for a more reddish-auburn tint, and

2) Goff is replaced by Greg Ryan as SI blogmeister. In turn, Goff moves on to coach the Yankees.

Discuss.

Posted by: The Mill | October 25, 2007 8:31 AM | Report abuse

Nice tease Goff. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait. I would like to hear that DC will be sponsered by a major company (no xango please), and that Gomez and Emilio will be coming back next season.

As far as tonights game. I see Dyachenko and Kpene starting with Moreno possibly subbing in the 2nd half. I think we will play the 3-5-2 with Gomez applying pressure up the middle. As much as I don't like teams playing to "not lose the game", I think thats what we are going to see. That way DC can get healthy for their home match where they have dominated all season.

Thanks for the viewing tips!

Posted by: tim | October 25, 2007 8:41 AM | Report abuse

I'm thinking Moreno starts, but we save Emilio for a second half sub.

Perkins
Namoff, McTavish, Vanney, Burch
Olsen, Simms, Gomez, Fred
Moreno, Kpene

With Emilio in for Moreno at around 60 minutes regardless of the score. Mediate for Olsen. DeRoux for Fred, or Carroll for Kpene if we're winning

bluemeanies: The indoor National Lacrosse League (with no DC area team) is the one with the labor dispute.

The outdoor Major League Lacrosse is different. The Washington Bayhawks moved to DC from Baltimore last year and played their games at Georgetown this past summer. Their playing at RFK next season would be smart for them (and I wouldn't be surprised if DCEC didn't try to entice them over), but I doubt it's gonna happen.

Once again, I will request that links to anonymously written (and often wildly incorrect) blogs NOT be posted on the Soccer Insider. If they are too cowardly to put their names on it, they're not getting on here. Sorry, my policy.

The rumors I am chasing have nothing to do with the shirt sponsor (which is going to happen for next season) or the stadium saga (which will continue to go around in circles and someday stop in dc or the suburbs).

I thought Soehn should have rested guys against Columbus. The line up I'd like to see tonight would be a defensive 4-5-1, with both Emilio and Jaime sitting. If we can escape Chicago with a 1 goal deficit, we'll win the series.

My line up:
Perk
Namoff McT Boz Burch
Olsen Carroll Simms Fred
HotRod
Kpene

Assign Carroll to follow Blanco. Keep Dyachenko in that withdrawn role where he can still get forward, but he'll have some defensive responsibilities. Kpene is pretty good at receiving a ball under pressure, holding possession, and dropping a pass to a wing or advancing central mid. I think we could have success in this formation, keeping Chicago off the board while still creating a handful of chances for ourselves.

Posted by: Matte | October 25, 2007 10:50 AM | Report abuse

Um, the stadium deal is going forward. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Fenty sign the deal at 31 Flavors last night, and she told her brother, who told this guy who runs this website. I guess it's a done deal.

Posted by: EdTheRed | October 25, 2007 10:52 AM | Report abuse

Thank you Simone.

Playing a defensive 4-5-1 didn't really work out for us last year, did it?

In winning the SS, this team stepped up defensively AND scored goals. You have to dance with who brung ya. To switch tactics now would be suicide. Lets play DC United soccer and kick ass the way we've been doing all year long.

Posted by: Chico | October 25, 2007 10:57 AM | Report abuse

Seriously, would Nats satellite parking at RFK be that big a deal? We play 15 home games or so a year, 3-4 of which are either before or after the baseball season. The Nats probably would be on the road for half of those, so the net effect could be that for six games, a few hundred of the ZILLION or so unused spots in lot 7 are filled. (Seriously that lot is just massive.) This also supposes that a) Nats fans fill the new stadium consistently and thus need to use off-site parking, and b) that the shuttle isn't such a huge pain that no one uses it.

I don't think it would necessarily be that big a deal.

Posted by: JK | October 25, 2007 11:02 AM | Report abuse

I think the Nats parking issue might be a ploy by the franchise to stress the urgency of the parking and infrastructure situation to the DC Govt (hence the Sports Commission not knowing what they were talking about). Also, they want to get the word out early to fans that Metro is THE best way to get to the new Park.

My vote for the big news... sponsor and Emilio re-signing

Posted by: Kev | October 25, 2007 11:23 AM | Report abuse

I am excited for tonight and I really don't think that we should be as apprehensive as everyone has sounded to this point. We are going into Chicago tonight and we are going to win! Simple. This is a different team this year, compared to years past and if we can get Moreno and Emilio for even part of tonight's game, we'll be a stronger lineup than we have had agaist Chicago in our last two matchups.
We haven't lost to them the last two times we met them and neither time were we a complete squad... DC wins tonight and we make Chicago look silly in DC next week.
Go United!

Posted by: therealfan | October 25, 2007 11:24 AM | Report abuse

I'm thinking one rumour is that Moreno/Gomez is/are returning. DCU (I think it was Kasper who was quoted) has alreaady said they are going to exercise the option on Emilio on December 1. And, the other is that MLS is adding a 2nd DP.

Posted by: Soy United! | October 25, 2007 11:41 AM | Report abuse

A second DP would have major implications on the league, not just United.

Posted by: Chico | October 25, 2007 11:52 AM | Report abuse

PLEEEEEEEASE no Brian Carroll tonight. He's had one good moment all year: when he dribbled the ball down the left flank and passed it to Emilio who scored against NE. Other than that, he been making mistakes on our half and giving away the ball.

Sticking Kpene in for part of the game is more than enough deviation from the regulars.

Posted by: UVA to RFK | October 25, 2007 11:53 AM | Report abuse

I think the rumor is that we are adding Abby Wambach for depth at forward, and that Veron is coming to DCU next season because he totally has a crush on Abby.

Posted by: T. Henry | October 25, 2007 11:56 AM | Report abuse

I'm so damn nervous about this one. Is it 8:30 yet???

Posted by: Bloomingdale DC | October 25, 2007 11:58 AM | Report abuse

Soehn changed the lineup at halftime against Chicago when we played at RFK on the 13th. Chicago was forcing Perkins to make a highlight reel worth of saves because Simms was manmarking Blanco but couldn't simultaneoously also cut out all Chicago's passing lanes through our midfield. So he brought on Carroll for Kpene and we were much better organized defensively in the 2nd half.

So, if you combine that info with the hints that Goff is dropping, even a blind monkey like me can figure out tonight's starting lineup.

Perkins

Namoff McTavish Vanney Burch

Carroll Simms

Olsen Riquelme Fred

Shevchenko

Since you've now told us the identity of the shirt sponsor isn't it, I'm switching my second guess to an announcement that the Red Bulls have been traded to France. This has a major impact on DCU because it will make us all very happy.

Okay, not the sponsor, not the stadium, parking isn't major... hmmm, I suppose two re-signings would technically be two rumors. Or perhaps Moreno has decided to retire and is announcing now to light a fire under the team?

Steve, I know I'm whistling into the wind (I cleaned that up for you) but can you tell us if, in your opinion, these rumors would be considered positive or negative for the team? For the most part we've been good boys & girls today. :-)

2. the nWo will return to wrestling and will also support DCU by showing up regularly at games to pump up the crowd and intimidate the opponents.

Anybody else see bad omens in press coverage of the CA fires, like USA today leading headline "Fires ravage . . ."

I'm psyched that United is under so much pressure given the past playoff performance against Chicago. The press accounts have neglected to mention the gomez spitting incident, but I'm looking for him to have a personal chip on his shoulder and to continue his current torid streak. Jaime opens to help hold the ball and move the offense, Kepene starts and Soehn holds Luciano and only plays him if he needs him. I'm thinking DC wins by 2.

Because of lease difficulties, DCU to play at Fed Ex Field. Or M&T Bank stadium. Or better yet, Lincoln Financial Field.

I think that would have a real impact on DCU's future, and it would make NY fans very happy because it would mean we didn't have to travel to your disgusting city to see our beloved team play. And it's more likely, and funny, than the idiotic scenario above.
