The Aftermath (Veron and NCAAs)

No Veron at RFK. Read my short story here. You are sure to notice in there the reference to DCU not necessarily pursuing a designated player to fill the slot they thought would go to Veron. Players are a-comin' this winter, but they might not carry Veron's superstar status. No...

Veron Update

Greetings from North Carolina. The flight was fine, thanks for asking. Upon arrival, the cell phone was buzzing with messages. Here's the latest: All those breathless reports you read last night and this morning that Veron had signed and was going to be introduced at RFK Wednesday? How shall I...

Hokie Fever

While we await Juan Sebastian Veron's decision whether to come to DCU -- no, no, no, nothing is certain yet -- I am off to North Carolina to see Virginia Tech in its first NCAA College Cup. Here is my colleague Adam Kilgore's feature on the Hokies, my short game...

Afternoon Update

*The rumblings about Carlos Ruiz leaving Dallas are getting louder. Several sources tell me the Guatemalan forward is almost surely leaving FCD. Will he land back in L.A.? If so, is the league okay with Ruiz, Donovan and Beckham on the same roster? Or will he go elsewhere? Someone mentioned...

While You Were Sleeping

D.C. UNITED *The link to the print edition story about Boswell's exit and Perkins's imminent departure. *The link to the Poplar Point development story and graphic (hard to see). *Reliable sources tell me that DCU's new goalkeeper, Zach Wells, has been invited by Bob Bradley to U.S. national team training...

Goodbye, Bobby

Just got off the phone with Mr. Boswell, Houston's newest defender. Unlike some United player departures in the past, this is an amicable split. I can't tell you how many times I have spoken with exiting players -- here and elsewhere in the league -- who have grumbled about lack...

United Updates

I am saving some good material on the trade for the print-edition story (sorry!), but will share a few items of interest now: *According to DCU folks, Bobby Boswell requested a trade. *United decided not to exercise the option on Jay Nolly's contract, but will provide him the opportunity to...

Breaking News: Boswell Traded

[UPDATE: The deal is now official. United receives a conditional second-round pick in 2009.] D.C. United has traded defender Bobby Boswell to the Houston Dynamo for goalkeeper Zach Wells and a future draft pick, sources said today. An announcement is expected once both players have been notified by the teams....

What Else Is New.....

While I have your attention..... *Expect MLS to finally unveil the new player guidelines in the next couple days (foreign limit, developmental rules, grandfathered designated players, etc.). *Scratch Peter Nowak from the potential list of coaching candidates in Chicago. Nowak has grown tired of seeing his name mentioned for various...

Morning Offering

The DCU-MLS trade/signing/transfer watch continues..... *The full print edition story can be found here. *I hear from a reliable source that the Norwegian club pursuing Troy Perkins is Valerenga. *Reports in the Argentine media say Schelotto is considering a return to Argentina after one excellent season in Columbus. *Reports in...

Still Waiting.....

It's getting late, and still no official deals. However, I can tell you that..... *.....the club pursuing Perkins is apparently from Norway. *.....Boswell has been told by club officials that his name has been discussed in trade talks, according to Boz. *.....MLS did not necessarily void the Cannon-Ruiz-Boswell deal. Some...

The Latest.....

Things are a-changin'..... Now I am hearing that Boswell is on his way out of D.C., perhaps to Houston, which might mean one of the Dynamo goalkeepers is heading this way instead of Cannon. Complications with Ruiz going to L.A. and joining high-priced Beckham and Donovan might have killed the...

DCU Trade Update

Nothing finalized yet, but..... *Carlos Ruiz going from Dallas to L.A. could very well be part of a mega-deal that also involves Cannon. *Still not sure what United is planning to relinquish in all of this. *From what I understand, United's pursuit of Cannon did not begin until they received...

DCU Goalie Shake-Up?

Sources tell me that DCU is in discussions about acquiring Joe Cannon, two-time MLS goalkeeper of the year. One source says the deal is done, but others caution that it is a complex and sensitive situation and several details still need to be worked out. Cannon, who will turn 33...

2018 Cup and Other U.S. Notes

USSF President Sunil Gulati plans to meet with FIFA leadership in Toyko this weekend to discuss parameters for bidding to host the 2018 World Cup. Upon his return, "we will review the issues internally" and determine by the end of March whether to go forward with a formal bid, Gulati...

Things I Hear.....

*While negotiations have not gone well between Christian Gomez and D.C. United, I hear that at least one MLS club has expressed interest in trading for Gomez's rights. Gomez's contract expires at the end of the month, but under league guidelines, United would retain his MLS rights -- and have...
