Hokie Fever

While we await Juan Sebastian Veron's decision whether to come to DCU -- no, no, no, nothing is certain yet -- I am off to North Carolina to see Virginia Tech in its first NCAA College Cup.

Here is my colleague Adam Kilgore's feature on the Hokies, my short game previews, a UMass feature from the New York Times and a UMass feature from the Boston Globe.

Those UMass stories make me feel a bit less bitter about getting cut by Sam Koch back in 1991 when I was a recruited walk-on at UMass. Good for them.

Kick-ass, UMass, go state U!

Good choice, Sir Goff. Going to where news will be made rather than hanging around here where everything is up in the air.

Meanwhile, we'll keep up our idle speculation about things Veron and Poplar Point.

Cheers...

There must be something in the water in Mass these days. Man, what a cool story.

As an aside, this is why champions in a sport should be crowned at the end of a tournament. You get to see underdogs fight it out. (BCS is crap...)

A Tech/UMass final would be great.

scooped by si.com? OUCH!
I know, your still on vacation ;)

SI: "Juan Sebastian Veron and D.C. United have agreed to a $3-4 million a year deal that will be signed and officially announced next week, SI.com has learned."

How do you aggree to a salary range ? That seems like a stretch to conclude Seba & DCU are in complete aggreement.

There can be no scooping goff... because dc united news doesn't actually happen until it's reported on soccer insider. That's the doctrine that I choose to believe.

Anyway, looking at the news articles being posted here, it looks like veron has either decided to sign with DC or not sign with DC. I'm glad we've narrowed that down. Maybe we can get a quote from Sohen on this.... "There are possibilities that Veron will sign and there are possibilities that Veron won't sign...."

*From the U-23 game report, Jozy finds woodwork and makes Real Madrid salivate? I'd like to see the video . . .

>>The sequence began with a series of quick passes through the midfield, with Sacha Kljestan eventually finding the feet of Josmer Altidore 30 yards from goal. The imposing striker spun on his mark and proceeded to beat a trio of defenders to find himself one-on-one in the box to the left of goal. With the goalkeeper charging, Altidore slid a low shot that appeared pegged for the far corner, only to be denied by the right post.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/news?slug=txunitedveron&prov=st&type=lgns

Posted by: kinsellagem | December 14, 2007 09:59 AM

***********************
"I'm staying because of the fans and my team-mates. The truth is that I couldn't say goodbye," said the 32-year-old, who had spells with Parma, Lazio, Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter Milan in Europe.
My team-mates' request for me to stay was very important. And I couldn't ignore the fans' affection. It is impossible not to be touched when you are an Estudiantes fan," Veron added on Ole.com.
The veteran, who collected a Serie A title with Lazio, admitted he had been very tempted by the offer to join MLS.
"It was a lot of money; maybe I would advise a kid to go," he said. "But in a situation like mine it is better to live for the things that give you happiness."
Key among Veron's reasons to stay was Estudiantes' qualification for the Copa Libertadores.
"My teammates told me: 'We fought for a year to play in the Copa Libertadores and we have to stay together'," he said.

I think the yahoo article is based on the Argentine article, which promotes a lot of yellow journalism. Veron is coming to United. If he wasn't, SI and Markazi look real bad.

Posted by: jgildea | December 14, 2007 10:29 AM | Report abuse

I'm with bristol. You guys may have lucked out. He's damn good in a dead ball situation, but high-energy midfielders would disrupt his play.

But then again, given enough free kicks, he could have a 10g/10a season. Still, he doesn't seem like the kind of player who excells in MLS.

This is certainly a strange predicament. And Goffer is in a car somewhere... Hope he has a cell phone. Right now my money is on the deal being off. I don't know why, it's just my gut.

I think it's a shame. Veron would have added some excitement and experience to the team and the fans. That said, I'm sure United has a plan B and we'll be competitive as we alway are. Trust in the FO!

Guys, I wouldn't trust a word Clarin says or most of the Argie press for that matter. In all likelyhood, these 'quotes' are heresay at best. IE: Heard from someone who knows someone who said Veron was staying. These quotes are probably made up. He's under contract until Saturday with Estudiantes and would not announce leaving until then anyway. Besides, he had his (1 year tournament victory aniiversary) party on Tuesday and did not mention he was staying. Wouldn't he have done that then?

Posted by: I call BS | December 14, 2007 11:06 AM | Report abuse

i think the article about VT was pretty interesting given that the coach is bringing 24 year olds over for one year. I assume they still have college eligibility because they were brought through the soccer academy system and skipped college, but maybe didn't make it to the pros? and yet are still good enough to be on a final 4 team. what's in it for the players to get 1 year of college?

also, it's got to make it really hard for recruiting if you're replacing guys every year.

Posted by: pat | December 14, 2007 11:08 AM | Report abuse

$3-4 Million!? That's a load of cash. Couldn't DC get someone better, younger, and more influential for that amount? If Veron has really said no, I hope that ownership are still willing to shell out real cash for an influential player.

Posted by: MFF | December 14, 2007 11:09 AM | Report abuse

It would be great to have Veron in our midfield. But given his attachment to Estudiantes and his history in England, it is questionable that he puts in the effort, or is effective, when he is in an uncomfortable situation.

Nobody knows how he would be at DC but it is clear, if that article from argentina can be tusted, that his heart is with estudiantes. And really, I can't get mad at the guy if that is the case. That sort of loyalty is rare in professional sports and it is cool to see.

All that said, I still have my fingers crossed that he comes to town. If he was comfortable here, he would be a beast.

I heard on GolTV this morning that for years, it has been Veron's greatest wish to play alongside Bobby Boswell, and that he's been utterly devastated this week after having bought a house near Bobby's and everything.

Posted by: Goose | December 14, 2007 11:16 AM | Report abuse

The Clarin article linked above has enough detail to sound pretty credible. Unless the author (his e-mail address is in his byline) is just making stuff up it sounds like he got quite a lengthy interview with Veron.

And that Veron made a last minute decision to stay with Estudiantes.

Posted by: garbaggio | December 14, 2007 11:19 AM | Report abuse

I'm telling you guys, besides his name recognition, there are better Argie players who United could get for a lot less than 3-4 million/year. The only plus side is with him there is no transfer fee.

I know, this is the second time something like this has happened.

Sven Göran Eriksson was originally tapped to become the new manager of DC United before Tom Sohen, all because he wanted to coach the greatest player in the world, Freddy Adu.

And then management went and traded the guy and Eriksson was so heart broken that he backed out and decided to take a low rent gig like Manchester City while he contemplated what he would do with the next stage of his life.

Yeah like the Poplar Point Plan B.

How are we supposed to trust the front office:

1. We lose are starting goalie to some club in Norway.
2. They failed to secure a contract for our playmaker.
3. They failed to bring in the big name they focused all their energy on.
4. They failed to get the stadium started in the place they focused all their energy on.
5. Our key, central defender, is now in Houston.
6. We get a green inexperienced goal keeper and a bag of balls in return.
7. We now have two other instances of the front office not getting their guy, remember Big Head Ruy?
8. Our front office is likely going to be thrown into disarray now.
9. This gives Metro fans another reason to poke fun at us.
10.Veron is not coming.

Sorry I'm sick now and at this point nothing short of Shevchenko coming will make me feel any better.

Personally I thought that throwing $3-4m/year at a player is great if you get someone like Riquelme. Veron would have made a splash but probably the same kind that Denilson made. Anyway, why would we have three players (Gomez, Fred, Veron) filling the same role. That's just excessive.

United needs a world-class central defender, another partner for Emilio, and a playmaker. Gomez is nice and Fred will do in a pinch.
