Payne Recovering and Other News

*D.C. United President Kevin Payne underwent six-hour, quadruple bypass heart surgery this morning at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The operation was the result of testing last month. Payne, 54, suffered a mild stroke in October. He is planning to return to work full-time sometime in February.

*In a significantly less serious procedure, DCU defender Devon McTavish had hernia surgery in Germany this week and is expected to fully recover in time for the start of training camp in three weeks.

*Troy Perkins's transfer to Norwegian club Valerenga is complete. No financial details were revealed, but sources say it approached $750,000.

*Just touched base with Bruce Arena on reports that he is being considered for a job with the Chicago Fire, either as coach or in their front office. His response: "There is no truth to it."

*Former MLS player Joselito Vaca is moving from Blooming in Bolivia to a club in Cyprus.
