'Quakes Deal Top Pick

*Expansion San Jose has apparently traded the top overall pick in Friday's draft to Kansas City for defender Nick Garcia. Details from the Kansas City Star are here. Are the Wizards now angling to select Virginia Tech's Patrick Nyarko or UC Santa Barbara's Eric Avila with the No. 1 pick? Or did they acquire the slot to pick someone else? It seems San Jose felt the need to add defensive experience to play in front of goalkeeper Joe Cannon following central back Clarence Goodson's decision to leave MLS and sign overseas.

Thoughts on the deal?

Meantime, Davy Arnaud is expected to miss the start of the K.C. season.

My only thought would be:

Is the talent pool in this years draft that bad? No offense to Garcia who is a good player, but this seems to be not much value for the #1 pick.

JUST GOT MY SEASON TICKETS FOR THE QUAKES YESTERDAY, BUT MAN, I WANTED TO HEAR OF US GETTING A SOLID MIDFIELDER OR A FORWARD, BUT GARCIA IS QUALITY, HARD NOSED AND A GOOD ONFIELD LEADER. MY QUAKIES LOOK REAL SOLID IN DEFENSE, NOW THE MID AND FORWARD SPOTS NEED TO BE FILLED. I DON'T THINK THAT YALLOP / DOYLE / DAYAK / RUSSELL ARE DONE YET BY ANY MEANS FOR FRIDAY, I EXPECT SOME BIGGER NEWS, MAYBE BRIAN CHING COMING BACK TO THE BAY SO HE COULD BE WITH HIS WIFE IN THE BAY, UNLESS SHE TRANSFERED SCHOOLS!?!?!

i think KC got the better end of this deal for sure.

goff - you said you were writing up a post article on jeremiah white yesterday? is it online?

Posted by: pat | January 15, 2008 2:54 PM | Report abuse

Since Eddie Johnson will be gone soon, KC will pick Nyarko as his replacement. This is a perfectly logical explanation.

as a quakes fan (and new season ticket holder) i was disappointed by this move; acknowledging that there probably isn't anyone in the draft who is ready to step in and make an immediate impact, i am in this for the long haul; even going after some solid veterans, i don't see the team being any more than mediocre this season; the fan base is hungry enough and the venue small enough that attendance would remain solid as the team went through its growing pains the first couple of years; i'd rather have seen us go after some high-upside young talent

having said all that, doyle and the other decisioon makers in the quakes frony office know infinitely more that i, so we'll just leave it to them

Yeah, I agree w/ the consensus here. Terrible move for SJ. Nick Garcia? Really? Way to add a certified thug . . .

Posted by: Tim Crawford | January 15, 2008 3:03 PM | Report abuse

While I would take Nick Garcia in a heartbeat, I'm not sure he's worth the #1 pick. Although I would think this move makes sense. Expansion teams are notoriously bad on defense and getting a veteran like Nick, who is still on the right side of 30, should help. You can't expect Cannon to stand on his head every game to save teh team. He did it quite a bit for LA and they still weren't that good defensively.

I would expect KC to take Nyarko.

Goff - Argentine press says Peralta is about to complete his transfer to DCU. What have you heard about that and what about Martinez and Vanney? Thanks.

ENOUGH! WHERE IS THE DC UNITED INFO!!! JAIME? GOMITO? ANY ARGIE? PERUVIAN? COLOMBIAN? ANY SOUTHIE BY NOW! ANY TRADES! IM RELAPSING HERE IN SUNNY CALIFAS! THE GALAXY JUST CAUGHT A TROUT WHAT BAIT ARE WE USING TO CATCH ONE?

Steve-
any news on speculations that MLS teams will be participating in Copa libertadores in the very near future? it was stated last night on Contacto Deportivo.

I have this feeling that the DCU folks aren't talking to anyone...not even Steve...or maybe especially not Steve :-)

Posted by: seahawkdad | January 15, 2008 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Well this has to signify that EJ is gone for sure. I guess Nyarko or Avila is his replacement.

In an unrelated not the Fire have unveiled their new jersey with the Best Buy logo. There's a pic at MLSnet

dc fan: jaime is staying 4 another 2 years gomez is still in negociations but very close to staying about the peruvian or the other peolpe i dont know anything

For the love of Ronaldinho, cut the caps...

I know zippy about Nick Garcia, but I like that KC is trying to bring in a #1 pick to offset the loss of EJ.

Posted by: RK | January 15, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse

The Best Buy sponsored Fire jersey looks terrible. What a shame for one of the leagues' better looking kits.

Posted by: TCompton | January 15, 2008 3:39 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe it, but I'd rather see the normal price tag BB logo...at least it has some creativity to it.

Posted by: RK | January 15, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Thanks 135!

Is there an incognito blog for DC fans? No disrespect to the others but it seems like a teaze to read elsewhre news...

i know anything and averything about jaime and gomez because they are personal friends of mine ive tried to get info from them about the new signings but they say they dont know so im guessing dc officials dont even tell their capitan what they are doing

It pains me to say it, but that jersey is worse than the bumper-sticker-on-a-shirt design of the pre-Beckham Herbalife jerseys.

The more I think of it, the more I like this trade. Would be nice if KC would throw in a draft pick as well though.

Also, I noticed the captain's armband on his MLS photo. A captain-quality, veteran defender... Not bad at all.

Posted by: Zungazan | January 15, 2008 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Well - at least it's generating revenue. DC has been the bilboard for adidas' 'Three Stripes' since inception, and gets squat for it.

Posted by: UVA-United | January 15, 2008 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Actually, I think putting the yellow and black Best Buy logo on there would have been absolutely appalling. This doesn't look that much different than what they already had; it's just "Best Buy" instead of "Chicago". Personally, I always felt putting your city's name across your jersey is redundant.

On the move:

KC clearly wants Nyarko to replace Johnson. On the balance (established defender for promising young forward), I'd say this deal will end up pretty even. Nyarko seems likely to leave MLS if he is a success, while Garcia will probably be starting-quality for another 2-3 seasons.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | January 15, 2008 4:14 PM | Report abuse

KC got the way better end of this deal, especially if Nyarko's GenAdidas contract doesn't count against the salary cap. Talk about clearing a lot of cap room

Posted by: churtmah | January 15, 2008 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Ives reporting that Burciaga is headed to Colorado for a draft pick - KC is cleaning out its back line today in addition to losing EJ.

Posted by: Eric Z | January 15, 2008 4:50 PM | Report abuse

KC wants Nyarko.

Posted by: Kire | January 15, 2008 5:05 PM | Report abuse

San Jose is doing what it needs to do, obtaining a solid base of experience.

What has plagued a lot of new MLS sides is the over reliance on youth to perform.

Once they've got that solid base, they can begin bringing in their few young new players along, but only after they have an idea of how to play together.

Posted by: TCompton | January 15, 2008 5:07 PM | Report abuse

Anyone who wouldn't want Nyarko on their team is very silly.

Yet, hypocritically, the trade makes sense.

Although, hasn't KC signed a foreign striker?

I doubt Avila will be the number one.

-------------------------------------------------

Yeah, it may be redundant, but it's a big plus in terms of jersey sales. I think there was a marketing study somewhere that demonstrated people were more interested in buying jerseys with the city name than the team name. It's all about representin' the hood...

City, Team Name, Whatever

$$$$$

I suspect that people at BSPN2 and their advertisers might feel differently. Casual viewers who tune in need to be able to see at a glance which team is which. They can see from the graphic at the edge of the picture which team, identified by city, is ahead. They then need to be able to tell whether that team is going from left to right, or the reverse. As a non-Eurosnob who immediately recognizes only a few teams' kit (e.g., ManU red), I have that problem with EPL and other overseas broadcasts.

Goff: Any word on Arguez's "training" that was actually a trial?

Hertha Berlin's manager called him a "Mini-Ronaldinho", so was he really that "raw"?

Mookie shouldn't go for less than a million.

The whole league gets $100M out of the current Adidas sponsorship. But you're right, DC probably does not get anything extra.

RE: Non-Eurosnobs. Isn't it sad when you identify a team by the sponsor's name rather than the team's (sorta like the stadium). I suppose if you have a really big screen and 1080i, you can see the badge.

Nyarko may be good for KC in the long run, but wouldn't they need an experienced player right away if Johnson leaves?

Wonder if FSC will show more Fulham matches now. I hope not. It would be painful to watch our boys lose.

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | January 15, 2008 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Good move by Earthquakes. They're settling their defense with solid players. I will be really impressed now if they use their DP or $400K max salary slots to sign a talented number 10 and a forward. If they do that, they could be a contenda.

"mini-Ronaldinho"

Wasn't that quote explicitly about his hair?

Bobby Boswell is hinting at some other movement of friends of his, some including European moves. Is he speaking of Bryan Arguez?

They are really close to getting Ivan Trujillo to help fill that spot.
