San Antonio, Szetela and Schedules

*As part of MLS preseason, DCU, Houston, Toronto and Chivas USA will participate in the first Texas Pro Soccer Festival on March 4-8 in the greater San Antonio area. Each club will play three matches.

*Former Crew midfielder Danny Szetela is being loaned by Spain's Racing Santander to Brescia in Italy's Serie B for the rest of the season with an option to buy.

*The complete MLS schedule is close to being finalized and clubs are hoping to be able to announce their fixtures later this week or next week.

Can't wait to see how many Fifa dates MLS plays through this year.

Poor Danny...one good youth tournament can't carry a career my friend.

Tex, this is actually a great move for Danny.

He's going to get playing time at Brescia, and they are currently in the playoff position for promotion to Serie A.

If you remember, Brescia was one of the teams that were initially interested in signing Danny.

Good for Danny! He needs to be getting TRUE playing time. Hopefully he does good in italy, and brings them up to the serie A and at the same time attracts attention from the bigger clubs in italy and spain while doing it!

Each team will play three matches? Over a five day span (March 4-8)? A match, one day off, a match, one day off, a match? Man.

What is wrong with these guys putting out the schedule a month before the season starts. It should have been done months ago.

Don't think of your fans or anything!

Posted by: alex | January 29, 2008 6:06 PM | Report abuse

I would be surprised if any individual played more than 180 of the available 270 minutes. This sounds like a glorified scrimmage, with just about every one of the 25 or so players on each squad getting some playing time.

Posted by: 22201 | January 29, 2008 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Exactly.

Posted by: Goff | January 29, 2008 6:13 PM | Report abuse

As Phillip said, this is actually a really good move for Szetela, Brescia was the team he was moving to until Racing came in at the last second, this way he gets first team football, which he never got at Racing, despite making the bench a handful of times and can build for inclusion in the WCQ.

===================

There may be several forces at work here: shared stadiums and TV contracts. MLS does not have its choice of TV slots, whereas the NFL has the 1PM and 4PM slots on Sundays (plus overruns) reserved for the next millenium. Some MLS Thursday night games will likely be dumped for a college football games (or Poker) if ESPN expects higher ratings for that.

Not only every other day Bootsy, but 8pm, then 6pm, then 1pm, so not even 48 whole hours - and they invite you to watch practices on the off days - it should definitely help build up some endurance if nothing else, playing the main guys the first half of each game and a few others a bit more just to wear them out might not be a bad idea. Plus sprinkle some of the trialists and draft picks in, trial by fire, so to speak. Still, I prefer the tournament in Charleston, but this one comes before the first CCC games so I can see why we'd do it instead.

Goff, do you know what is going on with Feilhaber? How did he bomb so miserably? Derby can't seem to wait to off load him. Is it playing style, personality or what?

Hey Goff,

Please pass on best wishes to your colleague Mike Wise. I just heard today the almost tragic loss of his life yesterday. Thank God he is alright.

Actually A Rickey, you should send you best wishes my way, not to that of Mr. Wise (although he is a more reasoned writer than I am).

I follow the German media pretty closely (as well as having family and friends there) and the consensus is that he is a faily unmotivated and lazy player.
Look at his exit from HSV as proof of that. He was sick of having to fight for a spot on HSV 1, and decided that he'd be able to get an easy spot with Derby because he scored one nice goal in a second tier international tournament. Well we see how that has played out for him now that he's left a huge club for a tiny one and can't even get time on there.
He has talent, but I have always been 'dazzled' by his shocking lack of work ethic.
He needs to realize that anywhere in the world he is going to have to fight for his spot. He simply doesn't have that drive yet. If his current tack keeps up, he can basically kiss his career for the USMNT goodbye as, IMO, Edu and Bradley have both surpassed him as DM/CM options.

Five years -- five years! -- I spent in San Antonio for the Air Force, making the long drive up to Dallas once a year to see my D.C. United, and recently adding a somewhat shorter hike to Houston (good to see you there last year, Screaming Eagles). Not once does DCU show up during that time. A few months ago I left the Air Force and moved to Maryland, so DCU is rushing to San Antonio for a week and three games! Life ain't fair, I tell ya. (On top of that, there was an MLS exhibition game in San Antonio during my time there: Scum vs. Crapids. I confess: I went!)

Hey Mike Wilbon - you read Goff's blog? That's interesting. Hope you're feeling better. Question: are you in Chuck Barkley's 5?

Posted by: KG | January 29, 2008 10:27 PM | Report abuse

TPS why are you complaining? You left that hell-hole that is SA and can now go to 30+ games of United a year. Seems like you got the best of that trade to me in spite of missing those 3 worthless scrimages.

Posted by: whaaa? | January 29, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

I think there's a tendency to blow a player out of proportion when it comes to first team action. If he was from any other country, it still would depend on his play in practice.

Having said that, sorry that you couldn't play. News from the Szetela front has been scarce, which is unfortunate.

He should have joined Roma, and been loaned out and groomed. But maybe you guys are right about Brescia.

Plus now it's even more fun to cover soccer since Victoria Beckham is in the mix

The same thing could've happened with Roma or any other club, too. It isn't as if he is getting signed with the idea that he's an instant starter.

Goff -- how is Grady Renfrow doing? He was always quite the baller among the local youth ranks, but given his battles with cancer/leukemia, it's rather amazing that he was even invited to training camp. I'm sure that Purple Eagles everywhere are rooting for him: http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2005/10/10-27-05tdc/10-27-05dsports-06.asp

This is a good move for me. Yes I am not ready to start in the Spanish First Division but his move should get me some playing time and then we will see where it goes from there.

Posted by: Danny S | January 30, 2008 8:31 AM | Report abuse

Grady Renfrow's story is truly inspirational, but the fact is that he had a solid, but undistinguished career on an undistinguished PSU team. Unless he is a late bloomer, I don't think we'll be hearing much from him in the long term.
