DCU GM Dave Kasper confirmed the Franco Niell signing and said that the Argentine forward will arrive in town this weekend for the start of training camp.
In other matters.....
*Kasper declined to comment on the prospects of United adding Argentine playmaker Marcelo Gallardo. What do I make of it? Clearly, the club cannot accommodate both Gallardo and Christian Gomez, and Kasper reiterated today that negotiations continue between United and Gomez's representatives. Perhaps a trade is in the works, a deal that would send Gomez elsewhere in MLS to a club willing to give him what he wants (big bucks and guaranteed years) and clear space for Gallardo. As I reported earlier, Colorado is the only MLS team I know of that has expressed interest in Gomez.
*Goalkeeper Jay Nolly, whose contract was not renewed but was invited to training camp, is no longer in United's plans and is apparently pursuing a gig in the USL (Vancouver, maybe?).
*Midfielder Justin Moose, who also had his option declined, is exploring opportunities and still might join United for training camp in an attempt to earn a new contract.
*Nicholas Addlery, also out of contract, is exploring his options as well. United is waiting to hear from his agent as to whether he will report to DCU camp.
*And most curiously, veteran defender Greg Vanney's status remains unresolved. As we told you weeks ago, the option on his large contract was not renewed and the sides were in talks over a new deal. Today, when I asked Kasper for a status report, he said: "We're not negotiating at this point." He would not elaborate, agent Ron Waxman had no comment and I couldn't reach Vanney on his cell. Hmmmm.....
Either these guys are being coy about a new contract or something is up -- such as a trade. If, indeed, the two Gonzalos (Martinez and Peralta) are coming in and with Devon McTavish returning, Vanney would become expendable. Let's keep an eye on this one, shall we?
