Piojo, DCU, Lunch, Real, a Book and 'Redemption'
I wasn't sure when I would be able to join you Wednesday, so I'll provide this late Tuesday offering:
*There is definitely something to Kansas City's pursuit of Argentine forward Claudio "El Piojo" Lopez. One source tells me: "I think it's going to happen." Wizards Coach Curt Onalfo says he has no comment.
*United GM Dave Kasper says reserve D-MF Jeff Carroll will probably miss 4-6 months after surgery to repair a ruptured toe tendon. He also notes that Jeff's younger brother, WVU's Pat Carroll, has done very well in training camp. Kasper estimates MF Ben Olsen will return in 4-6 weeks and confirms South American media reports that DCU is in discussions with Bolivian club Bolivar about a formal relationship similar to the one United has with Brazil's Atletico Mineiro.
*For a good cause, tickets are available to United's sixth annual Kickoff Luncheon on March 25 at the Capital Hilton. Proceeds benefit United for D.C., the club's charitable arm.
*Real Maryland, which will play its USL2 debut season at Maryland SoccerPlex, announced the signing of Nilson Perez and Christian Montero from Colombia and Emilio Zelaya from El Salvador. The club had previously introduced Salvadoran national team players Ronald Cerritos and Dennis Alas.
*Portrait of Passion, a new book about the U.S. women's program, will be available early next month. For more information, click here.
I leave you with this thought from a remarkable 1994 movie:
"You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific? They say it has no memory. That's where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory. Open up a little hotel right on the beach. Buy some worthless old boat and fix it up new. Take my guests out charter fishing."

Great movie, but I have to say, I wouldn't want to go to a with no memory unless I have had a rough life. Even though things aren't exactly how I want them now, I don't lack for the important things and can't really complain.

Great movie. Possibly one of the best "escape" scenes ever.
Goff, any rumblings on stadium response from United. I still can't get over the blatent manipulation of the short term memory challenged general population by Fenty. "I'll tell everyone that we'll build the stadium but that United won't get it for free and I'm sure no one will remember that United has offered all along to cover the entire cost of building the stadium"
Well Mayor Fenty... I remember. As do the rest of Goff Nation. :)

Dear Mr. Goff,
Can you do some snooping and try and find out why the Galaxy left a healthy Martino at home for their Asian and Hawaiian trips?
Thanks, a Galaxy fan...

If it means anything, a buddy of mine who went to HS with Brian and saw his bro play Pat, told me that Pat at that level was way better than Brian.
I think Pat will grow to be a great player like brian has.

I do believe those first two years were the worst for Goff, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him.
Also, Goff, be careful with too many positive stories about Mexico on a soccer blog, no matter how fantastic the movie / short-story you're quoting.
Posted by: Kyle | February 20, 2008 12:25 AM | Report abuse
I always liked that they didn't change the "Maybe it's because I'm Irish" quote for the movie.
It will be interesting to see who emerges as Olsen's replacement for the Champions Cup matches, as well as the first couple MLS games (I somehow have a hunch that "4-6 weeks" means the full 6 weeks). Mediate has the edge currently, it seems, but maybe Kirk adapts quickly? Or perhaps Gardner does earn a contract, and Fred switches sides? In any case, the competition between them, at worst, should leave us with a player hungry to prove himself getting a couple games next month.

Like Susan Sarandon, the movie is overrated.
This line came from a great movie: "I want my two dollars!"
The Carroll family ought to be quite proud. Three potential full-time professional athletes isn't something a family not from western Pennsylvania produces every day. Kudos to Springfield Youth Club as well.

that's one of the most underrated movies of all time. Consider these gems, people:
"This is pure snow! It's everywhere! Have you any idea of what the street value of this mountain is?"
"Now that's a real shame when folks be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy, like that"
"Go that way, really fast; if something gets in your way . . . turn."

The Carroll's are good players but none are secure in their current situations. Brian is fighting to start in Columbus, Jeff is injuried and is very iffy for the future and Pat is struggling to make a developmental team. Good luck to all but this time next year 2 of 3 could be out of the game or at least out of MLS..
