Matchday: DCU at K.C.

[updated with DCU starters]

Greetings again from Ciudad de Kansas.

After swinging through Jayhawk country (Lawrence, Kan.), visiting the American Jazz Museum and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum at historic 18th & Vine and chowing at Gates, I'm ready for some futbol, aren't you?

Before we get started with our MLS discussion, a few things to share:

*Former DCU keeper Troy Perkins made his Valerenga debut against Adin Brown, Pat Noonan and Aalesund in Oslo today, where it was 35 degrees with rain and sleet. Valerenga wins, 1-0.

*As followers of all things futbol, you will be pleased to know that Bob McKillop, coach of the Davidson College basketball team that has reached the regional final, twice during his news conference today referred to his desire of replicating "the beautiful game of Brazil" with his underdog Wildcats.

*For a look at how DCU changed its roster and, the club hopes, improved its long-term prospects, click here. For a look at the print-edition graphic, click there.

As usual, this is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame banter.

DCU STARTING LINEUP: Wells; Namoff, Martinez, Peralta, Burch; McTavish, Simms, Gallardo, Mediate; Niell, Emilio. Fred begins on the bench as part of Soehn's plan to manage minutes ahead of the Pachuca match Tuesday. Other subs: Carvallo, Kirk, Stratford, Carroll, Quaranta, Moreno.

K.C.: Hartman; Leathers, Conrad, Wahl, Harrington; Jewsbury, Zavagnin, Marinelli, Pore; Trujillo, Lopez. (Myers out with toe injury.)

Conditions: Cold, gray and windy.

Nice touch: The Wizards have named the private boxes after soccer legends -- Cruyff, Eusebio, Weah, Best, Shearer, Schmeichel, Dalglish, Stoitchkov (!), Etcheverry (!!) and many more.

Highlight of the Night: TV color commentator Thomas Rongen's red bow tie!

Arguez Update: According to a reliable source with a red bow tie, former DCUer Bryan Arguez has been called up to the U.S. under-20s for a tournament next month in BajaBeja, Portugal. The Americans will play Portugal, Italy(??) and Northern Ireland. Four Dallas players, Nimo from RSL, two from Chivas USA, plus uncapped Vincenzo Bernardo (Napoli), Ellis McLaughlin (Hertha) and DanishNorwegian-based midfielder Mikkel Diskerud.

I leave you with the words of jazz legend Ornette Coleman, which could certainly apply to futbol.

How would you rate the bbq sauce at Gates? Worth a try?

Posted by: longfellow | March 29, 2008 4:36 PM | Report abuse

Perkins already misses the DC weather.

Man...I'm excited for the season. Hope we hold back players to rest them for Pachuca...

Posted by: Matt Y | March 29, 2008 4:44 PM | Report abuse

no chance we see DC debut jerseys with a front of the shirt sponsor tonight?

Posted by: missing the strips | March 29, 2008 4:48 PM | Report abuse

Can't wait for this one to finally get underway. Let's try to avenge our 4-2 opening day defeat to Kansas City from last year.

Prediction: 2 - 0 United. Goals by Emilio and Goal Machine McTavish

First, make sure the TV is off. Then, make your way to Kitty O'Sheas. Finally, enjoy the game.

Goff,

If you have time, get yourself some better BBQ at Arthur Bryant's - 1727 Brooklyn Ave. in the REAL Kansas City (MO). Bryan'ts beats Gates hands down.

If anyone is still having trouble with Comcast call the customer service line and have them send the reset signal to your box and reboot it. I tried another call and that's what they did for me so now it is working.

Just flipped on FSC -- poor Dave Johnson got shackled with Caliguiri...

I didn't catch the Toronto game. Chicago v RSL is playing again on the disturbing field.

Posted by: td | March 29, 2008 7:14 PM | Report abuse

If Dave Johnson is working for FSC tonight, who will be doing the CSN play-by-play when and if it comes on at 11:00 p.m.? Or will CSN simply be showing what Direct Kick showed in real time?

Nice, mlsnet already has the Columbus goals up...

Posted by: RK | March 29, 2008 7:18 PM | Report abuse

So where do I go to to catch the radio webstream this year?

Posted by: td | March 29, 2008 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Also, is the FSC feed just total crap for anyone else? Granted I live in Alabama and I'm sometimes surprised I get FSC at all, but this is ridic. I'm just wondering if it's a central problem, or Brighthouse/Birmingham's problem.

I'm a little surprised it's Mediate and not Quaranta out there, but he seems to be holding his own. We look pretty out of sync though.

It's been a few years, but if I recall correctly, Gates serves the beef on bread, usually with a big handprint smashing it down. Smokier, spicier sauce.

Mmmmmm, now I'm hungry.

I'm watching on mlslive.tv ... Kansas City's announcers are appalling. That's all I'm going to say on the matter.

I've been pretty impressed by the defense on both sides, but United's had some better pushes. Emilio's shot was a laser, and I'm surprised Hartman was able to get such a good block on it.

As for Claudio Lopez, I'm not too impressed yet. Gallardo has had a much better game thus far than his Argentine counterpart.

Posted by: Andy | March 29, 2008 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Burch really needs to work on his crosses.

Posted by: Colm | March 29, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

The home audio stream on MLSnet.tv is not working.
I MISS MY LIMARZI!!!!!

The TV camera angles are really rough to watch, I have seen high school football games that are easier to watch. The announcer isn't bad but he definitely isn't good. I hope we don't have to watch him on the delay.

We were unlucky not to get that penalty around the 15th minute... also I don't think McTavish was offsides on that one call. Other than that, the game doesn't seem that great. Is it me or is DCU not really going full speed? I think the small field and wind are really affecting the game.

Posted by: RB | March 29, 2008 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Alright, MLS, you win. I signed up for mlslive.tv.

Posted by: Colm | March 29, 2008 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Boy, 0-0 halftime is not a good result for us. We are clearly outclassing KC. We indeed should have gotten a penalty kick, and McTavish was not offsides. The ref is killing us on critical calls. Peralta is definitely the real deal. What a find. I'm concerned about Gallardo. His passing has been very questionable so far. He throws balls way too far forward and in spaces where nobody is. I hope he gets his act together. The other thing that strikes me is how DCU tracks down and challenges every ball this year; a far cry from the lazy asses from the past two years. But then again, Jaime, Bobby, and Josh are not on the field.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 29, 2008 9:03 PM | Report abuse

That was a hardcore dive by Lopez, it was hilarious how the KC announcers were so certain that there was contact intially and how it got awkward when they showed the replay where he blatantly dove...

Posted by: Chase | March 29, 2008 9:03 PM | Report abuse

The baseball game is over, and WFED is definitely not broadcasting a soccer game. Those of us who are away from a TV at the moment will just have to get in front of one at 11:00 p.m.

Well, I'm watching the Col-LA game, and Gomez is MIA...

Posted by: RK | March 29, 2008 10:10 PM | Report abuse

our heart didn't seem to be in it. not much running off the ball. All the long boots out of the back bypassed Gallardo. We just didn't use him in the second half at all.

Tino does seem to stand offside a lot. How hard is it to be aware of where you are?

Wells did get a hand on Lopez's goal. But he looked a bit rattled back there.

McTavish seemed to be the only one fired up at all.

Didn't we lose last year's opener to KC? We'll get there eventually.

Posted by: Glenn | March 29, 2008 10:13 PM | Report abuse

RK, his blast off the post came back to Cooke who scored... Gomez looked damn good then, and Colorado have been playing the long ball since

Seemed like we had a decent possession game going the first half, but I've got no clue where it went the second half. As someone stated, Gallardo disappeared for large portions of the 2nd...

Mediate has good ball skills, but can't pass or shoot. I kept shouting for them to replace him with Fred.

I wonder if the difference in the halfs was due to Niell?

I'm always amazed by the comments. Did some of u watch the game? DC showed plenty of skill but lacked a bit of understanding in the back and up front. This team looked like what it is...a real talented team that has lots of new faces and needs time to gel. Gallardo invisible? Did u see all his pinpoint passes? My only long term concern is whether the D gels together. The attack is gonna be unreal. Don't judge the performance solely on the final score

I don't believe Gallardo had such a bad game as many are making it out to be, his passing was fine most of the time, the problem is that nobody made the runs to make them effective.
This is Gallardo's first game in the MLS as well as many others in the team, give them some time to adjust.

I didn't think fields could be legally less wide than Houston's. Seriously, when I saw the size of that, I knew we'd be lucky to come out with a draw. Our game is speed and running, as we prove time and time again at RFK. Dolls and Dwarfs aren't going to win many headers.

Who's the worse passer, Emilio or Martinez?

Posted by: Glaucon | March 30, 2008 1:05 AM | Report abuse

I just hope Emilio was saving his energy and skill for Tuesday. Besides the one shot on goal his touches were off, runs not there, and his awful back-pass was the reason for the Lopez goal. We need our golden boot player to play like a league MVP. I hope it was just an off day.

Hard to see any improvement over last season and in fact we seem worse. Maybe Benny can make a difference when he's healthy. Looks like a big loss coming Tuesday.

Posted by: oric | March 30, 2008 9:05 AM | Report abuse

One game loose mean nothing. Any knowledgeable fan would understand how the game played. Was DCU off a bit? Yes, we weren't sharp but everyone needs to work harder and they will going forward. I can't understand people blaming Gallardo's passes. His passing abilities are 10 times better than Gomez. In fact, Gomez is gone so don't bring that crap anymore here and lets deal with it. Houston lost to New England so now Houston is the worst team?

Do you have a specific available alternative venue in the KC area in mind? If not, then they've got to go with what they've got. Still, I hope there will be few (or no) Thursday night games on BSPN2 originating from KC this year, for precisely the reasons you mention.

Also, does anyone know the precise dimensions of the pitch? It looked to be about 65 yards wide.

Tri-village: I would guess it was 65, the fifa minimum. probably intentional too. That lack of width, plus the wind accounts for the loss more than anything else. We suck in cramped quarters.

Gallardo's passes 10x better than Gomez's??? Yeah, if you account for the phantom soccer players HE thinks he's passing to. Please....Gallardo has been throwing rediculous passes into open spaces without thinking. He needs to come out of his own thoughts and start playing like there are 10 other guys on the field. More serious than Gallardo's sketchy decision making is Soehn's. I've been calling for his ousting since game one of last year. I sure hope he intentionally took out two very important players last night to rest them, because on the surface, once again, he seems clueless on people's performance on the field. We need a goal and he takes out Neill and Burch?....and puts in Quaranta? Oh my....did anyone else see that Mediate was struggling badly and was the logical person to take out?

i think soehn needs to go also. last night the game was no big deal all they are thinking about right now is traveling to mexico ,which they should be we need a good showing down there to come back to dc with a chance

It's official. The sky has fallen. The End is here. All hope is lost.

Seriously?

Remember last year at the beginning when we lost two or three straight. Well, that was with a team that for the most part had played together for about a year. This year, we've practically got a whole new team. Plus, Moreno and Olsen have been hurt.

Is a 2-0 loss on the road in MARCH really that big of a deal?

Posted by: TCompton | March 30, 2008 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Rusty early season games with some players out for rest or recovery. Not a big deal in the context of the long MLS season, after all last year's supporters shield came after a really bad start.

But can we SHUT UP about blaiming the refs? It's embarrassing for United supporters to always hear the same chorus of "blame the ref" after what was just a badly played and managed games. Why is it ALWAYS the first excuse offered... is it that important to belittle other teams by claiming that they can't win without referee bias? Embarrassing.

This is why you can' read a football match:

""Gallardo has been throwing rediculous passes into open spaces without thinking.""

This is why you are foolish:

"""More serious than Gallardo's sketchy decision making is Soehn's. I've been calling for his ousting since game one of last year.""

And this is really why you should sign your posts:

""the same chorus of "blame the ref" after what was just a badly played and managed games""

Goff: can you get more info on the u-20s coming to portugal? i'm guessing it is Beja, since Baja is a spanish name. do you have dates? there is nothing on the ussf site or on the portuguese federation site. thanks for any light you can shed.

So, Mediate is pulled down in the box. No call. McTavish beats Hartman for an easy goal, and is called offside. Instead of 2-0 at the half and coasting in the second, we blow the match (Wells? Don't make us miss Perkins, but that effort on the first goal was weak.)

Mediate blows a clear chance by, not sure what he was doing really, trapping it off his shin guard?

Gallardo had some fantastic passes through to spring Emilio, unfortunately Emilio has never had that extra gear. If he had ANY speed whatsoever, he could have been alone on Hartman twice. As it was, a third chance he rocketed toward goal for Hartman to make a nice save.

Wouldn't worry too much, KC will do well at home this season because the pitch is so narrow. Another 10-15 yards wide and we would have seen a different game.

How can that field from yesterday be regulation? I mean come on! A pitch like that offers unfair advantage to the home team. I don't know why the Wizards had to stop using the Chief's stadium but soccer on fields like yesterdays don't do anything good for MLS's image. Couldn't they find a college campus to play on?

I am so sick and tired of people making lame excuses about our VERY poor performences as of late. Wake up guys! We have lost to Richmond, Kansas City in the past few weeks. We've been together for 3 months and we still look like we have never met each other. The first half last night made me fall asleep . It was so unlike DC United.

Mediate should never have been on the field. I'd rather have had Carrol in defense and Burch on the left midfield.

Tactics are poor too. Taking Burch and Niell out, putting Quaranta and Straford in? And we were a goal down! Soehn has little sense of tactics and should be an assistant coach, not a head coach. I like Soehn, but a club like DC United needs better.

DC United is too good to get results like this. We started last year horribly, and we ended up bailing out of the MLS Cup in the first round. We need consistency all throughout the season--!

Back to on-the-field matters.

Only Toronto didn't don the change "Whites" yesterday. DC, Chicago, Houston, Galaxy* all had on the change whites yesterday. Has MLS returned to mandating the road colors?

Would it be possible to just allow teams to play in their REGULAR strip and allow wacky combos to be the CHANGE strip?

Oh well - I'm looking forward to my new DCU shirt - I'm guessing Thursday or Friday for an impending announcement given the travel of this week.

Time to FILL up RFK.

Back to vomiting at all the gloating over Nationals Park.

So by your standards we are 50% better than defending two-time MLS cup champs who lost 3-0 yesteray.

Please, high winds, short field, missing players. Not a big deal.

And anyboy who thinks putting quaranta in for Niell was a dumb move does not see the obvious. And fed in for A defender when you're down 1-0 is not stupid. It's called going for the win.

OK you DC crybabies, here's the scoop on the field width: It's a true 70 yards wide. Yes, that's right, it's wider than any game in the previous 12 seasons at Arrowhead, even if only by 4.5 feet. And that didn't seem to bother you all when DC won here in previous years...

As for the length, while not the desired 120 yds, it's still longer than games the Wizards have played that overlapped the NFL season - Lamar had mandated it be shortened to only 105 yds long so the goal lines didn't cut through his beloved Chiefs endzone wording.

That's your update from KC - You are now free to go back to your regularily scheduled excuse making. Glad you tuned in and thanks for the 3 points!

OK you DC crybabies, here's the scoop
========================================

You won, fair and square, I don't think anybody is contesting that. You scored when you had the chance. Yeah, maybe that was a foul in the first half, maybe the ball was unplayable, but you know, it's your home field. Good on y'all for the boistrous crowd. Keep it up.

It was a little weird, that's a short field and high wind. What I was saying is that I wouldn't take too much from that game as to DC's true form. No Jaime, no Olsen, no Fred for most of the game. An odd field, cold temps and high winds. We lost fair and square but I wouldn't judge the season by it. That's all.

"Back to vomiting at all the gloating over Nationals Park."

Mastodon Juan is very much looking forward to the April 23rd and 24th games against his beloved Mets. Third base dugout box, two tickets, scored from my old boss, and it'll be nice to see where all that public money went. I walked around the stadium last week and it's really great. Are there really zero baseball fans here? I know the Nationals aren't much to watch, but there's always the chance that Elijah Dukes will have a total meltdown and beat someone up with his bat.

No one will probably see this, buried so far down on an old thread, but here is some info on that u-20 MNT tournament mentioned in the post (USA is EUA in Portuguese). The tournament will be in lower Alentejo (last stop before Algarve), with the final in the district capital of Beja.

You actually have to have some fans before you start a blog! And KC Boy, isn't it "Lamar the great"? I mean, if it weren't for Lamar Hunt, the Wizards would have been moved to Saint Louis long ago. Regular crowds of 9-10K do not cut it...even in MLS. Heck, the Rochester Raging Rhinos have averaged more in attendance than the Wiz over their lifespans.

Man, I'd love to be there but I am out of town for the exact dates of the tournament. I'm hoping to be back in time for the final, but it isn't looking good.

If anyone is coming, you should know that the Porto-Benfica game is April 20. Porto is a great town and these are the best two teams in Portugal. Shame Freddy will be busy with that game and won't be able to suit up for the u-20s. Yeah, I know: racehorse attached to a plow, but still...wouldn't you like to see Freddy against people his own age for once?

I wonder whether the national team program would want Adu continuing to play at that level. I vaguely recall that he skipped the last U17 world championship for which he was eligible, in order to concentrate on the U20 team. Similarly, although he is still eligible for U20 events, he may have left them behind for U23 (and club, at the Benfica level) competition. In other words, he's been skipping grades.

re: Lean Seasons ... No love for the Supporters Shield? I was jazzed as heck to win that two years in a row. That represents a major accomplishment. Disappointing runs in the elimination tournaments to be sure, but not seasons without some real success. Hopefully we'll win a Supporters Shield AND some additional hardware this year.

that game was unwatchable. the camera was too far away and too low. they should mount the camera on the other side of the park. i thought i was watching some high school game...ouch! first game of the year we have to s*ck...

Posted by: etienne | March 31, 2008 11:04 AM | Report abuse

Is there a press box on the other side of the park? If the play-by-play people aren't seeing the game from the same angle as the camera, there would be even worse problems.

Couldn't they find a college campus to play on?

Posted by: Bart | March 30, 2008 02:54 PM

College stadiums are built around pointyball fields, which are 53 yards wide. Most of them don't have enough excess room to accommodate a soccer pitch that is more than about 65 yards wide. Maybe there are one or two in the KC area that could provide a pitch with a width of 70 yards or more. Does anyone know of any?
